The 100-Year Struggle to Shape the American Economy

Despite the growing population and significant natural resources of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), economies in that region currently represent only 2% of global GDP. Finished goods are imported to Africa from the US, Europe, China and Japan, while commodities remain the primary export. Addressing this balance must be the primary focus of initiatives to foster economic growth and development across the region in the coming years. However, there is currently a lack of intellectual discourse that incorporates diverse firm-level and institutional-level theories, as well as the stakeholder perspective, to explain the transformation of Sub-Saharan Africa into a production economy. This two-volume edited work brings together scholars of business in Africa and economic transformation to discuss topics including the knowledge economy, inter-regional relations, supply chains, the informal economy, the service sector and more, creating a broad and probing analysis of Africa’s potential for transformation and strategies to achieve it.This first volume explores a multidisciplinary perspective on the transformation of SSA’s economies to production and export orientation, which entail: facilitating SSA’s economic transformation through regional relations; the role of SSA’s informal sector on regional relations and economic transformation; and the recommendations for economic transforming in SSA. It will be of interest to scholars of business in Africa, international business, developing economies, business strategy and innovation.Ayodotun Stephen Ibidunni is a Senior Lecturer at Chrisland University, Nigeria. His research interests are Strategic Management, Operations Management, and Entrepreneurship in developing economies. He has published widely in international journals, including Technological Forecasting and Social Change, the Journal of Technology Transfer, among others. He has received several local and international awards for his scholarship. He is the Chair of the International Centre for Policy Research and Industry Linkages (ICePRIL).Evans S. Osabuohien is a Professor of Economics at Covenant University, Nigeria, and the Founding Chair of DePECOS Institutions and Development Research Centre (DIaDeRC). He is the author of five books and over 210 articles. He has consulted for many international agencies such as ACBF, AERC, CODESRIA, IFPRI, J-PAL, UNU-WIDER, UNCTAD, among others. He is a member of many Professional Associations. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (since 2012) and the Swedish Institute (since 2009), among many others. He is also a visiting professor at institutions within and outside Africa.

Tracing the origins of Britain’s current malaise to the abandonment of social democracy What has happened to Britain? As drivers on its roads can attest, it is the pothole capital of Europe. Once-beautiful towns now feature peeling paint, weeds and broken railings. Public services are no longer fit for purpose. A malaise seems to infect every aspect of British life: its economy, polity, social order, sense of well-being, domestic regional relationships and place in the world. In The Land Where Nothing Works, the distinguished historian A. G. Hopkins offers an explanation, tracing Britain’s current problems to decisions made in the 1980s that abandoned its postwar experiment in social democracy and mimicked policies of deregulation and privatisation promoted by the United States. In 1945, the new Labour government’s development programme aimed at creating a social democracy that would benefit all members of society. The counterrevolution launched by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1979, which remains in force today, promoted individualism and deregulation. The transition from one programme to another was a response to the growth of finance and services centred on the City of London, and to decolonisation, which redirected trade to Europe. The expansion of credit led to the financial crisis of 2008 and the years of austerity that followed, and fuelled the populist movement that culminated in Brexit. Hopkins argues that, instead of following the free-market policies of its mentor, the United States, Britain should draw on its own history of social democracy and borrow from its neighbours in Europe, where communitarian principles continue to be upheld.
