Die Südtiroler Rückoption aus neuen Blickwinkeln - das Buch beleuchtet die Fragen und schwierigen Entscheidungen, vor die jene Südtirolerinnen und Südtiroler gestellt waren, die 1939 im Zuge des Hitler-Mussolini-Abkommens für das Deutsche Reich optiert hatten. Im Mittelpunkt stehen nicht nur die Rückkehrbestrebungen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, sondern auch die Erfahrungen jener, die nicht zurückkehren konnten oder wollten. Untersucht werden die politischen, wirtschaftlichen und symbolischen Aspekte dieser Entscheidungen, ihre Organisation sowie die bürokratischen, sozialen und 
logistischen Herausforderungen. Ein historischer Atlas stellt die Bevölkerungsbewegungen dar. Ergänzt wird das Ganze durch Zeitzeugenberichte, aktuelle Forschungsperspektiven und Überlegungen zur Rolle digitaler Methoden in der historischen Migrationsforschung. Ein Augenmerk liegt auch auf bisher wenig beachteten Fällen: der Situation der Jenischen, der Rückoption im Kanaltal und den deutschen Sprachinseln. Das Thema erhält durch aktuelle Debatten über Identität, Migration und Minderheitenschutz neue Bedeutung: Wie geht eine Gesellschaft mit Abwanderung, Rückkehr und vielleicht sogar erneuter Migration um?
