La cuestión del ser enemigo

El contexto insoluble de la justicia transicional en Colombia

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A coming-of-age comedy. A telenovela-worthy drama. A moving family saga. All in a phone call you won’t want to hang up on. “A portrait of love, heartache, and hilarity that transcends its medium.”—Elle “Brilliant . . . Melissa Mogollon did not come to play.”—Kiley Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Such a Fun Age LONGLISTED FOR THE CENTER FOR FICTION FIRST NOVEL PRIZE This Random House Book Club edition includes an author’s note, a playlist, and a discussion guide. “Yes, hi, Mari. It’s me. I’m over my tantrum now and calling you back . . . But first—you have to promise that you won’t tell Mom or Abue any of this. Okay? They’ll set the house on fire if they find out . . .” Structured as a series of one-sided phone calls from our spunky, sarcastic narrator, Luciana, to her older sister, Mari, this wildly inventive debut “jump-starts your heart in the same way it piques your ear” (Xochitl Gonzalez). As the baby of her large Colombian American family, Luciana is usually relegated to the sidelines. But now she finds herself as the only voice of reason in the face of an unexpected crisis: A hurricane is heading straight for Miami, and her eccentric grandmother, Abue, is refusing to evacuate. Abue is so one-of-a-kind she’s basically in her own universe, and while she often drives Luciana nuts, they’re the only ones who truly understand each other. So when Abue, normally glamorous and full of life, receives a shocking medical diagnosis during the storm, Luciana’s world is upended. When Abue moves into Luciana’s bedroom, their complicated bond intensifies. Luciana would rather be skating or sneaking out to meet girls, but Abue’s wild demands and unpredictable antics are a welcome distraction for Luciana from her misguided mother, absent sister, and uncertain future. Forced to step into the role of caretaker, translator, and keeper of the devastating family secrets that Abue begins to share, Luciana suddenly finds herself center stage, facing down adulthood—and rising to the occasion. As Luciana chronicles the events of her disrupted senior year of high school over the phone to Mari, Oye unfolds like the most fascinating and entertaining conversation you’ve ever eavesdropped on: a rollicking, heartfelt, and utterly unique novel that celebrates the beauty revealed and resilience required when rewriting your own story.

A Novel

'A stunning global history of West Africa ... with this new tour de force, Green confirms himself as the most innovative historian, writer, and thinker of his generation' Ana Lucia Araujo, author of Humans in Shackles: An Atlantic History of SlaveryA unique, startling book that gives a rich and detailed sense of life in an African port some 360 years ago In 1665 Crispina Peres, the most powerful trader in the West African slave trafficking port of Cacheu, was arrested by the Inquisition. Her enemies had conspired to denounce her for taking treatments prescribed by Senegambian healers: the djabakós. But who was Peres? And why was the Portuguese Inquisition so concerned with policing the faith of a West African woman in today's Guinea-Bissau?In Cacheu Toby Green takes us to the heart of this conundrum, but also into the atmosphere of a very distant time and place. We learn how people in seventeenth-century Cacheu built their houses, what they wore, how they worshipped - and also the work they did, how they had fun, and how they healed themselves from illness.Through this story, the haunting realities of the growing slave trade and the rise of European empires emerge in shocking detail. By the 1650s, the relationship between Europe, West Africa, and the Americas was already an old one, with slaving entrepots, colonies, and military bases interweaving over many generations. But Cacheu also challenged the dynamic. It was globally connected to places ranging from China and India to Brazil and Colombia, and women like Crispina Peres ran the town and challenged the patriarchy of empire. For the first time, through the surviving documents recording Peres's case, we can see what this world was really like. Cacheu is an extraordinary act of historical recovery. It is the story of a seventeenth-century West African woman, but also of the shifting, sophisticated world in which she lived - its beliefs, values and people.

THEY CALLED US WITCH

Collective Osmosis

Though sustainable development goals and other international initiatives have insisted on the importance of energy access in peace building, there is still little understanding about the extent to which energy systems themselves can contribute to or mitigate structural violence. While there are ample relevant examples globally from a diverse literature and increasing body of case studies, this knowledge has not been systematically organized to show theoretical alternatives to current energy systems or deliver practical policy advice in building such alternatives. Informed by the contributions of a multidisciplinary global author pool, Energy Policy for Peace provides both a new foundation for researchers and practitioners exploring how energy systems can be changed to build positive peace, and a toolkit for redressing structural violence. The work opens by reviewing how unequal energy access strengthens structural violence. It argues that increasing access to energy access may be an important tool in mitigating structural violence. It concludes with practical policy recommendations and institutional reforms designed to mitigate the structural violence embedded in many energy systems and develop energy strategies for peace building.

Should Colombian Cities Issue Green Bonds?

An Independent, Financial Times, and Irish Times Book of the Year! A couple's search for a rural paradise on the Caribbean coast takes a sinister turn in this darkly ironic modern classic. When J. and Elena swap the parties and culture of the city for a simpler life on Colombia's remote Caribbean coast, they expect to find an Eden to call their own. Their plan is to lead the good life, self-sufficient and close to nature. But from the very start, each day brings small defeats and imperceptible dramas, which gradually turn paradise into hell... A satire of hippyism, ecological fantasies, and of the very idea that man can control fate, In the Beginning Was the Sea is a searingly ironic account of man's confrontation with nature and with himself. In amongst the mango groves, the young couple's surroundings inexorably claim back every inch of the 'civilisation' they brought with them, leaving them to question how they will survive in this new environment when they themselves remain unchanged. And, as their relationship breaks down--and the horror unfolds--who can they count on if not each other? Based on a true story, In the Beginning Was the Sea is a menacing, darkly funny tale of human weakness, the terrifying power of nature, and what happens when our dreams meet their fateful reality.

An incisive economic and political history of the Panama Canal On August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal officially opened for business, forever changing the face of global trade and military power, as well as the role of the United States on the world stage. The Canal's creation is often seen as an example of U.S. triumphalism, but Noel Maurer and Carlos Yu reveal a more complex story. Examining the Canal's influence on Panama, the United States, and the world, The Big Ditch deftly chronicles the economic and political history of the Canal, from Spain's earliest proposals in 1529 through the final handover of the Canal to Panama on December 31, 1999, to the present day. The authors show that the Canal produced great economic dividends for the first quarter-century following its opening, despite massive cost overruns and delays. Relying on geographical advantage and military might, the United States captured most of these benefits. By the 1970s, however, when the Carter administration negotiated the eventual turnover of the Canal back to Panama, the strategic and economic value of the Canal had disappeared. And yet, contrary to skeptics who believed it was impossible for a fledgling nation plagued by corruption to manage the Canal, when the Panamanians finally had control, they switched the Canal from a public utility to a for-profit corporation, ultimately running it better than their northern patrons. A remarkable tale, The Big Ditch offers vital lessons about the impact of large-scale infrastructure projects, American overseas interventions on institutional development, and the ability of governments to run companies effectively.

This book examines the Colombian experiment with robust rights protections and traces how those rights came to be meaningful in citizens' everyday lives, allowing them to claim access to goods like healthcare. Throughout the history of football, new leagues have periodically emerged offering high salaries to lure foreign stars - the United States, Japan, and China being prominent examples. Less well known, however, is the case of Colombia. The Colombian professional football league was a brief but remarkable experiment that attracted top South American and European players in the early 1950s, commonly referred to as El Dorado.Drawing on a wide array of archival material and other primary sources, this book explores how a small, economically underdeveloped country with no established football tradition managed to finance such a high-profile "pirate" league while confronting the international football establishment. It examines the economic and social conditions that made it possible to field world-class players such as Alfredo Di Stéfano and Charlie Mitten, and explicitly addresses the domestic and international circumstances that allowed so powerful a league to emerge so far from football's traditional centers of power. This book also traces the collapse of the league and its lasting ramifications for the history of football in the region. It will be of great interest to readers in sports economics, sports history, economic history, and Latin American studies.
