Im Sommer 2024 ist es in vielen europäischen Städten plötzlich aufgetaucht: das rote Dreieck, ein islamistisches Kampfsymbol, das die Hamas benutzt, um Feinde zu markieren.
Das war der Auslöser für Anna Bursians investigative Recherchereise. Die Expertin für Extremismus wertete geheime Chatgruppen aus, beobachtete Demonstrationen und Konferenzen und arbeitete 
in Archiven zu linken und propalästinensischen Bewegungen. Ins Zentrum ihrer Analyse rückten transnatio­nale Netzwerke wie Masar Badil und Samidoun, die unter dem Begriff 'Widerstand' eine politische Erzählung propagieren, in der bewaffnete islamistische Gruppen wie Hamas, Palästinensischer Islamischer Dschihad oder Hisbollah als legitime Akteure eines globalen antiimperialistischen Kampfes erscheinen - eine Erzählung, die seit dem 7. Oktober 2023 auch in autoritären linken Gruppierungen verbreitet wird.
Warum entstehen solche Allianzen? Welche antifaschistischen Grundsätze werden dabei aufgegeben? Und welche politischen Folgen hat es, wenn der Kampf gegen Unterdrückung zur Rechtfertigung von Antisemitismus und Gewalt wird?

This book analyses how preindustrial monetary practices functioned, focusing on Europe and some selected colonial areas between the fourteenth and twentieth centuries.&nbsp; It explores the major contexts in which monetary circulation operated and provides a fascinating range of case studies from experts in the field.A primary context for this edited volume is the raft of challenges associated with cash in the preindustrial period. Covering issues such as the slow circulation of coins, the risk of debasement, clipping, the first proto currency, and parallel circulation of several currencies, the book offers insight into the ways in which people dealt with the need to transact and exchange payment. It focuses on cash-equivalent goods and commodity currencies as well as traditional cash methods, looking at the physical development of money as well as exploring the structure of payment methods and financial systems in past societies.Grounded in extensive archival research, chapters use a range of sources such as notary deeds, wills, rent-books, expenditure accounts and public ledgers to analyse the dynamics of circulation and transaction in various settings, from the city to the countryside, regional to international contexts, and different European states.  is Associate Professor of Economic History at the University of Genoa, Italy. She specializes in financial history during the early modern period, Jewish history, and historical demography.

Große Komponisten und ihre Zeit

Helmut Lachenmann gehört seit langem zu den prägenden Persönlichkeiten der Gegenwartsmusik, seine Werke werden weltweit gespielt, ihr Rang steht außer Frage. Die Monographie Helmut Lachenmann und seine Zeit zeigt auf der Basis eingehender Quellen- und Werkbetrachtungen, dass der Weg des Komponisten einerseits konsequent ist, aber die im Laufe von mehr als 60 Jahren entstandenen Werkkonzeptionen andererseits doch von signifikanten Differenzen, Prozessen der Öffnung sowie Neuansätzen getragen sind. Lachenmanns Schaffen weist dabei, obgleich es mit guten Gründen als höchst originell angesehen werden kann, vielerlei Resonanzen und Reflexionen anderer kompositorischer Ansätze sowie von verschiedenen philosophischen Positionen auf. Und es vermittelt in gleichermaßen elementarer wie exemplarischer Weise, was die Idee einer existenziellen Erfahrung von Kunst innerhalb des breiten Spektrums der heutigen Gesamtkultur bedeuten kann.

Helmut Lachenmann und seine Zeit

Politics and History in Central Asia

This volume explores emerging patterns of migration from Central Asia to underrepresented destinations such as Australia, Japan, South Korea, Nordic countries, and Türkiye. It critically examines diverse dimensions of mobility—labor migration, student migration, return migration, gendered experiences, diaspora activism, digital media, and host country responses—through empirically grounded and theoretically rich chapters. Drawing on in-depth case studies and fieldwork, this volume contributes to global migration studies while offering unique insights into post-Soviet identity transformations and comparative integration experiences.
It also responds to pressing contemporary concerns, including Russian migration to Central Asia post-Ukraine invasion, migration governance during COVID-19, and gender advocacy through digital platforms in authoritarian contexts. The chapters bring together voices from early-career and senior scholars, combining interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology, international relations, political science, anthropology, and media studies.
Timur Dadabaev is a Professor of International Relations and the Director of the Special Program for Japanese and Eurasian Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Tsukuba, Japan. His books are The Grass is Always Greener?: Unpacking Uzbek Migration to Japan (Palgrave, 2022), Decolonizing Central Asian International Relations (Oxon: Routledge, 2021), Transcontinental Silk Road Strategies (Oxon: Routledge, 2019), Chinese, Japanese and Korean In-roads into Central Asia (East-West Center 2019), Japan in Central Asia (NY: Palgrave 2016) and Identity and Memory in Post-Soviet Central Asia (Oxon: Routledge, 2015) and others.
Shigeto Sonoda is a Professor of Sociology and Asian Studies at the University of Tokyo. His recent book publications include Japan-China Relations 2001-2022 (co-ed., 2023), Uzbek Migrants and Japanese Society (co-ed., 2023), and Japan-China Exchange (ed., 2025, all published by the University of Tokyo Press in Japanese).
Kirill Nourzhanov is Associate Professor and Deputy Director and Convenor of Higher Degree by Research studies at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (The Middle East and Central Asia). His recent publications include The Spectre of Afghanistan: Security in Central Asia (2021) co-authored with Amin Saikal, and Soft Power in Central Asia. Politics of Influence and Seduction (2021) co-edited with Sebastien Peyrouse.

Paula Becker & Otto Modersohn

The City Project

This book is based on the results of a meeting withing the framework of the SMART CITY 4.0 Sustainable LAB project in which the universities of Emilia-Romagna participate. It covers the topic of smart city regulation from a double perspective. On the one hand, it discusses rights in a smart city. Here, the book analyses the impact that urban transformation in a smart sense can have on constitutional rights, concerning, for example, social inclusion policies. It also discusses the topic of smart work, suggesting some innovative directions for the future. Further it suggests new ways to regulate the use and sharing of data and in general of technologies in smart cities to improve public services. The second part of the book deals with smart cities governance. It provides a fresh reflection on citizen participation and decision-making processes in the city of the future, analyzing some examples of digitalization and drawbacks in its availability throughout the national context (with a focus on the Italian situation). In turn, it discusses the fast evolution of the regulatory framework for automated driving in Europe, as an exemplary case study, offering some timely reflections on human safety. All in all, this book offers a comprehensive review of current questions concerning smart city regulation, merging different perspectives and providing both researchers and professionals with a source of inspiration for new research, developments, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Law and Rights in the Smart City: The Challenge of Regulation

krtitsch Armen (1906-1972) schuf mit 'Jerewan' einen Roman, der einerseits als Hommage an die alte Metropole Jerewan und ihre vielfältige Kultur, und andererseits als Kritik an der autoritären Umgestaltung des Stadtbilds gelesen werden kann. Jerewan soll in den 1920er Jahren neu geplant werden - vermessen, entworfen, abgerissen und wieder aufgebaut. Arschak Budarjan, in Leningrad ausgebildeter Architekt, kehrt für diese Aufgabe in die geliebte Stadt seiner Herkunft zurück. Doch in Jerewan werden die ästhetischen und politischen Fragen der Zeit ausgetragen: Soll der Fortschritt radikal die Wurzeln ausreißen und etwas gänzlich Neues schaffen? Oder soll er sich an der Wurzel die Kraft holen für eine Modernisierung, die das Bestehende bewahrt und schützt? Arschak Budarjan und sein doppelgängerhafter Antagonist Gurgen Parsadanjan setzen wie in einem Schachspiel Zug um Zug, um am Ende mit ihrer Vision als Sieger aus dem Kampf hervorzugehen. Doch zu welchem Preis?

Auf dem Spielfeld der Stadt im Umbruch führt Mkrtitsch Armen diese weltanschauliche Auseinandersetzung auf. Er beschwört das alte Jerewan und seine Bewohner, das Leben auf den Straßen und in den Häusern herauf, er gibt sich den Träumen hin, während die Abrisstruppen schon unterwegs sind und die Schönheit der traditionellen orientalischen Welt dem Untergang geweiht ist. Susanna Yeghoyans Übersetzung dringt bis in die Winkel und Schlupflöcher der Stadt und der Sprache, bringt den Erzählrhythmus eindringlich ins Deutsche und lässt uns beim Lesen die Stadt in rauschhafter Wahrnehmung und ständig wechselnden Perspektiven erleben.
