Although this was sometimes claimed by travellers, a lot of merchants confronted with the practicalities of conflict resolution in Bruges, disagreed. Fieremans analyses how customary law, institutional frameworks, and commerce intersected and were challenged by the aldermen's pursuit of justice. By clarifying the working of the aldermen, it advances our knowledge of the basic mechanisms of a late medieval law court and the evolution of the law courts of late medieval Flanders. Data on personal income and employment extends back to 1960 for the states and regions and to 1970 for the MSAs. Patterns of Economic Change complements other Bernan Press titles such as the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book and County and City Extra. The legal concepts that can fundamentally inform the economics of institutions In Legal Institutionalism, the eminent economist Geoffrey Hodgson proposes a new analytic approach for understanding modern economic institutions. Law helps to constitute some of the key features of modern market economies. Moreover, there is evidence that many people believe that obeying the law is important in itself, especially when it is deemed just, legitimate, and uncorrupt.
