Emojong D: Kenya Rising - The Vision of
His Excellency President Dr. William Sam

Kenya Rising - The Vision of His Excellency President Dr. William Samoei Ruto and the Road to a First-World Economy

The Bottom-Up Revolution

A challenge to incentivization as a dominant framework for understanding and governing people From corporate management and consumer behavior to public health and climate policy, incentives are widely treated as a neutral and effective way to shape how people act. In this book, Guus Dix shows that incentives are not simple policy nudges; they lull us into a passive understanding of ourselves as being merely responsive to changes others make to our environment. They foster a politics of incremental tweaks to a socially and ecologically destructive economic system that we are expected to accept without question. Dix argues that it is time to challenge the reign of incentives in contemporary science and public life. Dix traces the evolution of the incentive, from the engineering of performance charts and rewards for factory workers to combating gridlock at Britain’s National Health Service. He describes the function of incentives under socialism, theories of adjustment incentives developed at the Harvard Business School to manage employees, and incentivizing whole economies—both socialist and capitalist. He shows that incentivization is a distinct way of wielding power. Incentives have become part of a quasi-universal governing philosophy that keeps us from addressing such major issues as poverty and the climate crisis. Finally, Dix analyzes the limits of incentivization, arguing that being governed by incentives keeps us from considering government policies that have the potential to bring about meaningful and transformative change.

A Critical History of a Powerful Idea

Incentives

Reciprocity begins with a simple but unsettling question: why have we come to believe that human beings are naturally self-interested, competitive and acquisitive? This galvanising, perspective-shifting book dismantles the myth of Homo economicus to show us the way towards a world whose realities align with our true selves.Drawing on a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, evolutionary biology, economics and social epidemiology, Richard Wilkinson demonstrates that the characteristics which we assume to be our human nature are in fact effects of the market societies we live in. He traces how various systems of exchange have created profoundly different forms of social life throughout the course of history, shaping our behaviours, motivations, and the kinds of people we become. Though it may often feel like it, the avarice and oppressions that defines the twenty-first century are not an unchangeable reality we simply have to live with. The book explains why inequality, status competition and consumerism hold so much power over us and reveals the depths to which these forces are entwined with the ever-rising crises of mental illness, political polarisation and environmental destruction. Rather than asking how we can make individuals behave better, it makes a compelling case for restructuring our societies to make life happier, meaningful and more fulfilling for one and all.Rigorously researched, bracingly practical and full of passion and hope in equal measure, Reciprocity offers a bold reinterpretation of the world we live in. It equips us with the necessary tools to look beyond and remake it in our very own, amiably human image.

Digital Education and Learning

The digital landscape has changed dramatically in recent years with the continued rise of social media, Artificial Intelligence, and Internet of Things applications, creating a complex ‘thick’ mediated reality spanning numerous online and offline platforms (e.g., TV, radio, newspapers, smartphones, smart devices, apps, websites, social media, and more). These changes have transformed the digital skills required to participate in contemporary society. In this book, Alexander van Deursen and Jan van Dijk build on their earlier work on digital skills (published in their 2014 book Digital Skills: Unlocking the Information Society) to explore how technological developments reshape skill demands. They systematically examine the skills needed today, assess how they are distributed across the population, and provide guidance on how policy can address gaps, offering a comprehensive framework for navigating digital inclusion in a rapidly evolving media environment.

This volume provides a multidisciplinary analysis of disinformation and strategies for tackling it. Authored by a diverse group of scholars and experts, chapters in this volume are divided into three thematic sections. The first section delves into disinformation from various disciplinary perspectives including philosophy, social psychology, economics, international law, data science, anthropology, political science and history. By examining the underlying factors behind disinformation and analyzing its impact on democratic processes, this section sheds light on its complexities, and reminds us that different policy responses are always grounded in different explanatory angles of the phenomenon. The second section focuses on the information ecosystem, investigating the processes, technologies, and actors involved in the spread of disinformation. By examining real-world examples and the roles played by different actors and technologies, this sheds light on the intricate workings of disinformation in different thematic and regional contexts. The book culminates in the third section, which focuses on crafting effective responses to disinformation. Chapters in this section explore policy efforts aimed at ensuring information integrity across the world, and highlight the importance of fundamental rights and evidence-based policy responses, encompassing self and co-regulation, quality journalism, fact-checking organizations and the pivotal role media literacy initiatives.

A Multi-Disciplinary Analysis

The field of climate econometrics has undergone rapid development in recent years, shaped by the growing demand for empirical methods that can rigorously assess the multifaceted interactions between the economy and the climate system. Situated at the intersection of climate science and econometric methodology, this field responds to the urgent need for tools that quantify the economic impacts of climate variability and long-term climate change. Rising policy interest, data availability, and the increasing frequency of extreme events have collectively motivated the expansion of climate econometrics as a recognized and distinct research area.
This volume appears at a particularly timely juncture. The contributions assembled here reflect the current momentum in climate econometric research, both in theoretical development and empirical application.
Advances in Econometrics publishes original scholarly econometrics papers with the intention of expanding the use of developed and emerging econometric techniques by disseminating ideas on the theory and practice of econometrics throughout the empirical economic business and social science literature.

Econometrics of Climate, Energy, and Green Transition

Women entrepreneurs in the Global South are a powerful force for economic growth and social progress. By dismantling barriers and providing them with the tools they need to thrive, we can unlock their potential to transform communities, empower women, and build a more equitable and sustainable future. However, conventional economic thinking often perceives entrepreneurship as gender-neutral, depicting entrepreneurs as rational, self-interested individuals detached from any sex, gender, class, age, family, religion, or ethnic context. This gender-neutral stance neglects the unique barriers and hardships faced by women entrepreneurs, potentially hindering their participation and contribution to socioeconomic development. By exclusively focusing on market dynamics, financial matters, and management concerns, mainstream economic thinkers overlook crucial attributes and roles associated with women.
The book presents a paradigm shift, redefining entrepreneurship as a vehicle for social change and inclusion. It emphasizes the importance of a gender-responsive approach, advocating for targeted support systems that address the specific needs and challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in the Global South. The research tackles diverse themes and topics, emphasizing the importance of a gender-responsive approach, incorporating qualitative research, and recognizing the intersectionality of gender with other factors like migration and violence.
The International Studies in Small Business and Entrepreneurship Research series opens a new chapter, as it seeks to advance discussions that consolidate conventional knowledge. The purpose of this initiative is to invite new reflections on the nature of entrepreneurship and small business across contexts. The collections in this series aim to improve the theoretical rigour and practical relevance of the field. The emphasis is to advance contemporary contributions that matter for small business and entrepreneurship, directing us to underexplored and under-theorised contexts.

The Lies We’Re Fed About What We Eat and How to Break Free

Ultra-Processed Women

A rich history of the development of American minimum wage policy with lessons for today. Despite broad popular support for robust minimum wage policy, the federal minimum wage is now worth less--in real, inflation-adjusted terms--than at any time since 1949. While some state and local governments have stepped in to fill this void, others have declined to set any minimum wage standard at all. Traversing more than 100 years of history, Raising the Floor examines how interest groups have navigated the highly decentralized American political system to shape the development of federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. In her analysis, Shanna Rose highlights the importance of American federalism. She argues that because federalism creates multiple arenas for policy change, interest groups have sought out the sites most conducive to their goals, shifting their lobbying efforts as new obstacles and opportunities emerge. Federalism has facilitated minimum wage policymaking by fostering policy experimentation, learning, and diffusion across states and by allowing state and local governments to overcome gridlock and status-quo biases at the national level. Yet, federalism has also been an instrument for containment, enabling those opposed to minimum wage increases to litigate and preempt local-level laws. With rich historical chapters that illuminate different phases in the development of today's patchwork of wage standards, Raising the Floor is a deep examination of the past, present, and future of American minimum wage law.

Federalism and the Politics of Us Minimum Wage Policy

Raising the Floor

In many parts of the world, 100-degree days are already common. In the Indian subcontinent, temperatures can become so high that concrete in the cities buckles. In Morocco, hotter and longer droughts threaten crops and livestock, possibly wiping out the livelihood of millions. The lives of the world's poorest are already harder, hotter, and shorter thanks to emissions that disproportionately come from the world's richest. But just as the rich world's emissions are finally falling, poorer countries' are set to increase drastically. We seem to be caught in an impossible bind-but it's not too late.Renowned economists Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo (co-recipients of the 2019 Nobel Prize), and Michael Greenstone propose a radical new approach to combating climate change and the devastation that is already causing the most serious global crisis of our time. Substantial progress is possible if the wealthiest countries compensate the poorer countries for the harms that their emissions cause and, in exchange, poorer countries commit to climate action. Based on meticulous original research, years of fieldwork around the world, and deep engagement with world leaders and climate negotiators, Banerjee, Duflo, and Greenstone dive deeply into the specifics to show how this grand bargain would work to curtail emissions and address the suffering of the world's neediest. This paradigm-shifting and inspiring book reassures us that we can successfully confront the challenge. We can protect the poor while protecting our future. It's just economics.

A Better Deal for People and Planet

Just Economics

What people believe about the economy—and why it matters How do expectations about the future influence economic behavior? For decades, economists have known that beliefs play a central role—from how much households spend, to how firms set prices, to how central banks design policy. But figuring out exactly how expectations affect decisions has been one of the field’s most persistent empirical challenges. In this book, Olivier Coibion and Yuriy Gorodnichenko present a fresh empirical approach: using randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to study the causal impact of expectations. Drawing on more than a decade of their research, they show how targeted information treatments can generate experimental variation in beliefs—making it possible to measure how those beliefs influence real-world decisions. Along the way, they reassess the limits of the traditional rational expectations framework and offer a richer, evidence-based picture of how people form and act on their views about the economy. Blending the credibility of field experiments with the big-picture questions of macroeconomics, the authors provide a clear, practical guide to this new methodology—from survey design to implementation to measuring how beliefs pass through into behavior. While much of the book focuses on inflation expectations, later chapters explore how this approach sheds light on the role of uncertainty in firm and household decision making, the influence of expectations on financial behavior, and how peer effects shape household spending. For economists and social scientists alike, this book offers a new lens on how beliefs work—and why they matter.

The New Causal Macroeconomics of Surveys and Experiments

Expectations Matter

This volume (Parts A and B) contains 16 new studies that shed light on key aspects of immigration: the drivers of immigration, the factors fostering or hindering immigrant integration in the host country, and the impact of immigration in the host countries. The studies span a wide range of countries in Europe, North and South America and use novel administrative, regional and survey data to offer insights into historical and contemporary episodes of migration. Together, they enrich our understanding of the determinants and consequences of migration and provide an evidence base for policy discussions.
The volume covers three broad themes. In both Part A and B are eight papers on the integration of immigrants in the host society, focusing on the acquisition of human capital, labor supply, family formation, and returns to skills. Part B also studies the impact of immigration on outcomes that often dominate the public debate, namely employment, education, and crime. Published twice per year in conjunction with the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) Research in Labor Economics contains new cutting edge peer reviewed research applying economic theory and econometrics to policy related topics pertinent to worker well-being often with an international focus.

Migration, Human Capital and the Labor Market

How new technology is rapidly changing the nature of money and the way we pay A diverse and growing range of financial institutions and platforms—from PayPal and Venmo to WeChat, Alipay, and the brave new world of stablecoins—has harnessed new technology to disrupt the system of money and payments as we know it. Beyond Banks explains why this disruption holds out the promise of faster, cheaper, more convenient, and more secure payments, but also how it increasingly risks exposing consumers, businesses, and governments to the problem of bad money. Dan Awrey traces the origins of our current bundled system of banking, money, and payments. He explains why the problem of bad money—the result of antiquated and inadequate laws and regulation that fail to establish credible commitments to hold, transfer, or return a customer’s money on demand—requires that policymakers fundamentally rethink their approach toward the design of the laws and institutions at the heart of this system. He presents ways to effectively unbundle banking from money and payments, ensure the credibility of monetary commitments, and promote the stability of this system. Awrey also envisions a more forward-looking role for policymakers in encouraging greater technological experimentation, competition, and innovation in the realm of payments. Beyond Banks sheds critical light on the important but too often dysfunctional relationship among technology, regulation, and money, and lays the foundations for a safer, more nimble, and more inclusive system of money and payments.
