Examines whether the rule of law can endure without its natural law and metaphysical foundations, arguing for a renewed, human-centered legal order grounded in objective moral principles and capable of addressing contemporary challenges such as AI, technocracy, and decolonization.

Central to the book's unique vision is a multivalent, pluralistic re-envisioning of global norms. Drawing on the Christian philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd, specifically his concept of "sphere sovereignty," the authors propose a framework where diverse religious and secular traditions can collaborate without sacrificing their distinct identities. This approach offers a powerful way to decolonize the rule of law, moving away from "one-size-fits-all" Western impositions toward a culturally sensitive synthesis of universal principles and local traditions. 
The text also tackles the controversial relationship between Natural Law and the 10 Commandments, debating whether positive laws should be grounded in "naturally knowable" truths or specific religious revelations in a pluralistic state. 
Looking toward the future, the authors issue a stark warning against the rise of Generative AI (GenAI) in legal adjudication. They argue that replacing human value judgments with machine-driven algorithms threatens to eliminate the discretion and relational interaction essential to true justice. To counter this, the book calls for educational reform and a shift toward "principled legal education" that prioritizes ethics, restorative justice, and a "facts first" approach. Ultimately, this work is a call to action for legal professionals, theologians, and the public to reclaim law as a framework for human flourishing-a "language of love" between the divine and the human that protects the vulnerable from the arbitrary exercise of power.

The first history of US federal law enforcement from the nation's founding to the creation of the Justice Department in 1870, showing how federal prosecutions have always been shaped by local institutions and interests. The public imagines the Department of Justice and its agencies as mighty juggernauts. The reality is strikingly different. The FBI is barely larger than the Chicago Police Department, federal courts handle far fewer cases than state courts do, and federal prosecutors rely heavily on state and municipal authorities. The feds cannot function without local support, which means that the projects on which DOJ intervention is most needed-the ones that local communities oppose or don't care about-are also those least likely to succeed. This is no accident. Fragile Authority shows that this weakness is built into the structure of federal enforcement. To understand why, Daniel Richman traces the present-day workings of the DOJ all the way back to the nation's founding. The system was so circumscribed at the start that districts went years without a single conviction; enforcement efforts were often just performances of sovereignty for foreign audiences. And while a stronger enforcement apparatus emerged from the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act, its protection of Black civil rights during Reconstruction lasted only a few years before the federal retreat. After its creation in 1870, the Justice Department concealed its limitations by turning the agendas of local police-such as prosecuting gangsters, car thefts, and prostitution-into ostensibly national priorities. For better and for worse, federal law enforcement missions without local buy-in remain rare and difficult to sustain. This book explores how different legal systems handle a particularly difficult type of corporate wrongdoing: Catholic dioceses' responsibility for child sexual abuse. Usually, when people think about corporate wrongdoing, they think about tax fraud, insider trading, and similar 'white-collar' crime. As corporations, dioceses' responsibility for child sexual abuse exists separately from that of individual perpetrators, and this corporate responsibility is the focus of this book. Through an analysis of cases involving dioceses that have significant documented histories of priests abusing children, this book illustrates how criminal law, canon law, tort law, bankruptcy law and an Australian Royal Commission have responded (or why they have not). The cases involve the Diocese of Ballarat, in Victoria, Australia, and the Diocese of Gallup, in northern Arizona and New Mexico, in the United States. Each diocese faced similar claims in a diverse field of legal systems, so very different legal systems were handling, in essence, the same cases in dissimilar contexts. Employing a novel interdisciplinary approach, the book traces the theories, purposes, doctrines, procedures, and logistics of engaging with these different legal systems - evaluating what they can and cannot do. Revitalising theories of responsive law, the book demonstrates that it is possible for legal systems to better hold not just Catholic dioceses, but corporations more generally, to account for wrongdoing, but we may need to rethink how those systems are structured.
