This book is the only reference in English on private international law in Uzbekistan. Dispelling a common misconception that the law of ex-USSR countries is largely the same, the book provides an authoritative account of private international law in Uzbekistan, as well as the role the country plays in the harmonisation of private international law in the region and beyond. The chapters provide authoritative guidance on conflict-of-law rules, issues of jurisdiction in contractual and non-contractual matters, as well as the practice and procedure of enforcement of foreign judgements and arbitral awards in Uzbekistan. The book is the first that systematically explores private international law in Uzbekistan and is an essential tool in understanding the peculiarities of the country and their impact on legal practice.

Studies in National Governance and Emerging Technologies

This book examines how artificial intelligence systems and their applications in security and defence are entangled with governance and policy processes in the EU. Combining concepts and insights from (critical) security studies and science and technology studies, it argues that behind the various AI-related policy initiatives in the EU are particular narratives on security and defence based on European fears of technological innovation and strategic gaps. In this respect, the book casts light on how such beliefs have become increasingly instrumentalized in the European governance dynamics, and subsequently embedded in successive policy initiatives and security and defence research programmes. It challenges conventional understandings of AI technologies as mere security and defence-enabling instruments, by providing a conceptually driven analysis of how certain visions of AI help govern and control one of the most dynamic emergent socio-technical fields. The book will appeal to all those interested in artificial intelligence, security studies, technology and European governance.&nbsp;
 
 Raluca Csernatoni is a Research Fellow at Carnegie Europe, where she works on the nexus between European defence and emerging technologies. Governing China in the 21st Century

Since 2015, China has actively promoted “third-party market cooperation” as a new model of international economic engagement. This approach brings together China, advanced economies, and beneficiary countries to jointly develop infrastructure and construction projects, moving beyond traditional bilateral cooperation framework. Official narratives portray tripartite cooperation as a “triple-win” arrangement that combines China’s manufacturing capacity, partner countries’ advanced technologies, and the development needs of beneficiary countries. While such cooperation promises risk-sharing, resource complementarity, and enhanced project quality, it also introduces new challenges, including higher transaction costs, divergent governance practices, and complex negotiations among multiple actors.
Addressing the central question of why stakeholders choose tripartite cooperation and how three-party collaboration shapes project outcomes, the book makes both theoretical and practical contributions. It integrates transaction cost theory, international relations theory, foreign direct investment theory, and infrastructure natural monopoly theory to advance a novel concept of “semi-internalisation.” The analysis provides policymakers, practitioners, and scholars with a framework to understand partner selection, interest alignment, and the evolving dynamics of one of China’s significant yet understudied innovations in global economic cooperation

The Vietnamese Economy And The Fourth Industrial Revolution

This book provides a comprehensive review of Chinese trademark law, policy and practice with the updated materials since the reform of Chinese trademark law in 2019. It provides a clear explanation and insightful opinions on Chinese law from a comparative and international law perspective. It draws on the author's 16 years of experience in teaching, researching and practicing trademark law as a scholar in a prestigious Chinese law school and as an expert consultant to the Trademark Office, courts and companies. The book analyses trademark registration (conditions and procedures) and protection (scope of rights and enforcement procedures) with theoretical criticism and practical advice. On trademark registration, it has paid special attention to two prominent issues of interest to researchers and practitioners: problems in trademark registration due to the Chinese Trademark Office's strict examination of distinctiveness, public order and morality, and the risk of conflict with earlier trademarks, and difficulties in combating trademark squatting. On trademark protection, it has presented the constant and productive reforms of the Chinese trademark law, which strengthen the sanction of trademark infringement and the policies that motivate judges to significantly increase damages to trademark owners. The book has also described the characteristics of the Chinese administrative and judicial systems, where applicable, in which trademark law is applied. Overall, the book provides a clear and efficient way for researchers and practitioners to gain a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of Chinese trademark law and practice.

This book examines the Chinese vocational education system—an arena of growing significance in China’s economic transformation. Over the past few decades, the central government has moved to decentralize a traditionally school-based skill development system, embracing a more market-oriented model that incorporates substantial employer involvement. This shift has produced a highly decentralized system centered on targeted training partnerships between schools and firms. These collaborations, further institutionalized by a series of reforms associated with the Made in China 2025 initiative, have helped alleviate skilled labor shortages and sustain the competitiveness of China’s industrial sector globally. Yet, this book argues that neither a centralized, school-led model nor a decentralized, employer-driven approach has established the ideal institutional foundations necessary for sustainable workforce upskilling.
