Global Policing, Coordination, and the Fight Against International Crime

This book explores human vulnerability through the lens of natural law theory. Beginning with a detailed examination of natural law ethics, centred upon the virtues (Part One), it sets out the relationship between natural law and human vulnerability. To be human is to be vulnerable; but vulnerability must itself be understood by reference to the human goods that are the central concern of natural law ethics. Such goods lie at the heart of what it means to lead a flourishing life, but they are in no way certain: goods such as health, education, the family can all be perverted or taken away by human agency or the vicissitudes of life. Part Two poses the problem of how human beings and government can build resilience in the face of these vulnerabilities. Its main contention is that the central aims of vulnerability theory, including that of state responsiveness, are pre-figured in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. These teachings provide a compelling basis for the demand that the state be more responsive to social scourges such as poverty, crime, debt and dependency. Vulnerability theorists will benefit from a new perspective on the problems that are central to their analysis; natural law theorists will profit by an enrichment and extension of their central concerns.

Natural Law, Ethics and Human Vulnerability

Examines whether the rule of law can endure without its natural law and metaphysical foundations, arguing for a renewed, human-centered legal order grounded in objective moral principles and capable of addressing contemporary challenges such as AI, technocracy, and decolonization.
This provocative interdisciplinary volume addresses a mounting global crisis: the erosion of the rule of law in an increasingly secular and technological world. As societies move into what the authors call the "fourth era" of legal history, the rule of law is frequently reduced to a mere "toolkit" for elites or a "checklist" for bureaucratic efficiency, stripped of its deeper moral and transcendent roots. The book explores a vital question: can legal systems remain just when they are "truncated of transcendence" and disconnected from a higher moral order? By sifting through the legacies of legal giants like Lon Fuller and theologians like Karl Barth, the contributors argue that a purely procedural "inner morality" is insufficient to protect human dignity against authoritarian relapses or the cold logic of "technocratisation." 
Central to the book's unique vision is a multivalent, pluralistic re-envisioning of global norms. Drawing on the Christian philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd, specifically his concept of "sphere sovereignty," the authors propose a framework where diverse religious and secular traditions can collaborate without sacrificing their distinct identities. This approach offers a powerful way to decolonize the rule of law, moving away from "one-size-fits-all" Western impositions toward a culturally sensitive synthesis of universal principles and local traditions. 
The text also tackles the controversial relationship between Natural Law and the 10 Commandments, debating whether positive laws should be grounded in "naturally knowable" truths or specific religious revelations in a pluralistic state. 
Looking toward the future, the authors issue a stark warning against the rise of Generative AI (GenAI) in legal adjudication. They argue that replacing human value judgments with machine-driven algorithms threatens to eliminate the discretion and relational interaction essential to true justice. To counter this, the book calls for educational reform and a shift toward "principled legal education" that prioritizes ethics, restorative justice, and a "facts first" approach. Ultimately, this work is a call to action for legal professionals, theologians, and the public to reclaim law as a framework for human flourishing-a "language of love" between the divine and the human that protects the vulnerable from the arbitrary exercise of power.

The world has been shocked by the destruction of world cultural heritage sites over the past two decades, as seen in widely disseminated videos depicting events such as the demolition of the Buddhas of Bamiyan and the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. These acts are perhaps the clearest and most glaring examples of what is meant by the 'Intentional Destruction of the Cultural Heritage of Humankind' (IDCHH).The book explores in detail the remedies against IDCHH available under international law. These remedies are defined as all the lawful responses provided for both by customary law and by the special responsibility regimes created under the many substantive areas of international law. The examination includes UNESCO instruments and UN measures for the maintenance of international peace, mechanisms for the protection of human rights and those for the protection of investments, and international criminal justice outcomes through the decisions of the Permanent Criminal Court. Thus, the book explores avenues for response such as appeals to international courts, peacekeeping operations and referrals to the criminal legislation of States, in addition to reparations. The concept of the Cultural Heritage of Humankind implies that IDCHH harms all States and all peoples and human groupings in the world, not only the State or people on whose territory the cultural property is located. The book identifies the international law avenues for subjects not directly injured by IDCHH to obtain its cessation and reparation. This book is essential reading for students, academics and practitioners exploring international law and the destruction of cultural heritage.

This open access book introduces the first systematic approach to the debate on the unity or fragmentation of practical reasoning and its profound implications for legal philosophy. Bringing together some of the foremost legal philosophers from the Hispanic-Latin world, the book presents a thoughtful dialogue with the Anglo-American literature, making it of interest to scholars from both cultural traditions. Although the topic is rarely discussed explicitly and systematically, it is pivotal to ongoing debates about legal normativity, the nature of law, legal authority, and the rationale behind legal decisions. The book explores how human rights law, often framed as universal and abstract, responds to deeply personal questions of identity, belonging, and emotional impact. Based on a systematic study of over 3,300 judgments, the book shows how the European Court of Human Rights has increasingly made identity central to its reasoning - particularly in cases involving sexuality, ethnicity, and family life. In these areas, the Court acknowledges how state actions shape emotions such as fear, humiliation, and dignity. Yet, in other domains - migration, religion, professional life - the Court avoids emotional engagement, leading to troubling inconsistencies. The book argues that when emotions are excluded from legal reasoning, individuals are reduced to formal entities, stripped of depth and interiority.
