China Perspectives

This book systematically examines how the digitalization of global value chains (GVCs) has driven the high-quality development of China's manufacturing industry. It reveals the intrinsic mechanisms and pathways through which digital technologies reshape the international division of labor and promote industrial upgrading.Integrating theory with empirical analysis, the book establishes an innovative measurement framework for GVC digitalization. Using data from China's manufacturing sectors from 2000 to 2020, the book evaluates the quality of industrial development across five dimensions: innovation, coordination, green development, openness, and sharing. The book provides an in-depth analysis of the characteristics, challenges, and multidimensional impacts of Chinese manufacturing's integration into digital GVCs. Using rigorous econometric models, the study demonstrates that digitalization primarily advances high-quality manufacturing development through three channels: reducing transaction costs, fostering technological innovation, and optimizing resource allocation. This book studies one part of the Sundarbans, the largest and one of the most fragile mangrove ecosystems in the world. The study is placed in the context of highly topical international debates on biodiversity, climate change and economic transformation, in a region of South Asia that still faces immense population pressure and severe poverty. An analysis of existing and potential future policies sets the debate in a comparative international perspective that has relevance well beyond the confines of South Asia.
 
 While there have been a large number of studies on the socio-economic aspects of physical quality of life in the Sunderbans, there are very few perception studies except at a basic level. The current volume has two major aspects. The first part contains a detailed study of overall 
 demography and objective life condition
 which includes (a) quality and ownership of private goods – equipment and machinery, livestock, house, land, consumer goods; (b) quality of public goods and amenities and their accessibility; (c) objective measures of relatively abstract factors related to social, political and familial environment such as quality of governance, extent of gender equality, social inclusion, social harmony, security, law and order, family bondings; (d) financial assets and indebtedness; (e) income and expenditure; (f) natural and man-made calamity, and; (g) vulnerability related to points (d), (e) and (f) above.
 
 The second part comprises a detailed study of 
 subjective life satisfaction, and value systems and priorities
 . The former refers to 
 people’s perception
 regarding the various facets of their 
 personal life
 - economic situation, standard of living, family and friends, work life and environment as also their 
 perception about the well-being of the community
 . This refers to the overall social, business, and political environment such as social and help network, social inclusion, communal harmony, participation in civic and social activities, job opportunities and employment generation, government developmental project initiatives, disaster management initiatives, law and order etc. 
 Value systems and priorities
 refer to individual rankings of the factors considered as necessary for personal happiness and for a happy society. It also includes their preferred rankings of government developmental initiatives and views regarding effectiveness and impact of such initiatives.&nbsp;

Das Fachbuch verknüpft die Diskussion virtueller Währungen mit möglichen Auswirkungen von Bitcoin und Co. auf Zentralbankpolitik. Es richtet sich sowohl an Wissenschaftler, Experten und Praktiker als auch an interessierte Laien. Im ersten Teil bietet es einen Überblick über Geld, Geldtheorien und die Funktionsweise des konventionellen Geldsystems sowie seine aktuellen Probleme und Herausforderungen. Zu letzteren zählen insbesondere virtuelle Währungen, allen voran Bitcoin. Der zweite Teil des Buches widmet sich daher zunächst ausführlich ihrer Abgrenzung zu Fiatgeld, ihren Nutzern und Regulierungsfragen. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt schließlich auf der Bedeutung virtueller Währungen für Zentralbanken im Hinblick auf Auswirkungen auf den Geldmarkt und weitere relevante Politikfelder. Hier werden mögliche Reaktionen der Zentralbanken diskutiert und ob virtuelle Währungen eine ernstzunehmende Gefahr für das Geldschöpfungsmonopol sowie eine tatsächliche Konkurrenz im Geldsystem darstellen. Das Buch schließt mit einem Blick auf die Blockchain-Technologie und ihrer Bedeutung für verschiedene Finanzbranchen.

This book is open access, What makes people competent at work? This question is becoming complicated with the emergence of new technologies and the hastened pace of global economic exchanges. While there is less consensus about what people should know and be able to do to be rewarded in the workplace, the discussion about skills and competencies becomes even hotter among those who express concern about the gaps between the demands and supplies of "skilled" workforces.
&nbsp;
Given this situation, one of the main objectives of this book is to clarify the true nature of often-discussed "skills gaps", using the cases of manufacturing workers in the Global South. Instead of discussing the issues based on a broad, ambiguous understanding of human abilities, after an extensive, cross-disciplinary review of the literature and theorization, the book proposes a detailed classification of cognitive, non-cognitive (including socio-emotional skills and personality traits), and technical abilities. Then, it presents both contextually relevant and generalizable explanations about relationships among them. By doing so, the volume offers insights for policymakers and practitioners seeking ideas to reform their human resources development policies and practices.

The second objective of the volume is to propose the analytical perspective of Realist-Constructivism, using the "skills gaps" analysis as the empirical case, to demonstrate its theoretical, conceptual, and practical capacities to overcome the dichotomy between induction and deduction through abductive reasoning with a set of instruments to collect data that enable such analysis.

Empirical surveys, using a set of questionnaires and skills assessment we developed, were conducted in four countries in the Global South: Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, and Pakistan. With Realist-Constructivism, we can consider work-related competencies in close relation to the specific workplace requirements and culture, while situating them within broader industrial, economic, and regulatory frameworks. Our methods and instruments enable us to link the subjective epistemologies of competencies among individuals in the micro-ecologies of the workplace with the ontological realities of labor market opportunities and evaluations.

This book uncovers the controversies around the suspended prison sentence, its main aims and features, and the role that it occupies within the wider criminal justice context. Suspended prison sentences were introduced in Central and Eastern European (CEE) states as alternatives to short prison sentences: although they were initially generally conceived of as exceptional penal tools, over time, they became the most imposed and dominant penal sanctions and, in that sense, a defining feature of criminal justice systems in the region.The book provides a rich source of information about the development and features of suspended sentences in eight CEE countries, a topic that although of great importance due to their frequency, has received only scant academic attention. Employing a legal, socio-legal, and criminological approach, it achieves this goal through individual chapters on eight countries (Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Serbia, and Slovenia), and also through two general chapters, which outline the main specificity of the region as a whole but also present nuances between different countries.The book will be of interest to a wide variety of academic researchers who study crime, punishment, and the penal system, and especially to those interested in sentencing. Given the huge discrepancy in the frequency of use of this sanction in CEE countries and the frequency of use of parole in contemporary practice, the work provides unique insights into the potential and desirability of its wider use, particularly due to minimal supervision that it requires in examined countries. The book therefore seeks to critically inform current thinking of the value and appropriateness of particular forms of sanctions in responding to crime.

This book explores democratic development in Indonesia-the world's third-largest democracy after India and the United States. Through case studies, it looks at two rival versions of democracy-the republican form and the electoral form-and posits that electoral democracy is not sustainable without republican institutions, laws, and norms. In recent years, there has been growing instability in Indonesian democracy, with brutal fighting among political forces and deep polarization. This book contends that what needs to be explained is not the democratic decline in Indonesia but rather the deviant form of democracy that the country has been practicing since the fall of the military dictatorship. It is argued that in the last twenty-five years, Indonesia has practiced a Schumpeterian form of democracy with a heavy emphasis on election while neglecting the minimum threshold of a healthy republican form of democracy: political participation, equality of virtues, and the principle of nondomination. The book invites readers on an intellectual journey to explore the republican ideal through the lenses of philosophy, law, politics, and the history of the problem of democracy in Indonesia.
