Collective and individual trials and tribulations are constant realities for Armenians in Turkey since 1923. More than a century after the Armenian Genocide, anti-Armenian public rhetoric and misrepresentations are commonplace in print and broadcast media, among government officials, public figures, and the general public. State discrimination against the Armenian community and the non-Muslim minorities in Turkey is as old as the Republic and has been institutionalized and structured over the decades. Against this background, The 'Other' Citizens: Armenians in Turkey presents a discussion of the two main schools of thoughts within the Armenian community in Turkey and highlights several sociological concepts that are useful to the understanding and analysis of the Turkish state's and society's treatment of the Armenians.

Los!' Heike Geißler

Wer jetzt nicht lost ist, ist verloren

The Psychology of Revolution is a social psychology classic text by Gustave Le Bon that deals with the The Psychology of Revolution and contains the following excerpt:

The present age is not merely an epoch of discovery; it is also a period of revision of the various elements of knowledge. Having recognised that there are no phenomena of which the first cause is still accessible, science has resumed the examination of her ancient certitudes, and has proved their fragility. To-day she sees her ancient principles vanishing one by one. Mechanics is losing its axioms, and matter, formerly the eternal substratum of the worlds, becomes a simple aggregate of ephemeral forces in transitory condensation.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (née Perkins; July 3, 1860 - August 17, 1935), also known by her first married name Charlotte Perkins Stetson, was an American humanist, novelist, writer, lecturer, advocate for social reform, and eugenicist. She was a utopian feminist and served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. She has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story "The Yellow Wallpaper", which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis.

The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches is a 1903 work of American literature by W. E. B. Du Bois. It is a seminal work in the history of sociology and a cornerstone of African-American literature.

The book contains several essays on race, some of which had been published earlier in The Atlantic Monthly. To develop this work, Du Bois drew from his own experiences as an African American in American society. Outside of its notable relevance in African-American history, The Souls of Black Folk also holds an important place in social science as one of the early works in the field of sociology.

In The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois used the term "double consciousness", perhaps taken from Ralph Waldo Emerson ("The Transcendentalist" and "Fate"), applying it to the idea that black people must have two fields of vision at all times. They must be conscious of how they view themselves, as well as being conscious of how the world views them.

In Shock and Yawn, Megan Sibbett confronts state-sanctioned, mundane violence committed in the name of protection and argues that queer storytelling is an ideal avenue for recognizing, theorizing, and subverting it: Through queer stories, we have a direct window into the real-world ramifications of violence that purports to be for the public good. This violence, reinforced and normalized through surveillance campaigns, failure-to-protect laws, border policies, and government messaging, is obscured by both its banality and its benevolent veneer, in which children, or imagined children, are central to its logic of protection.

Building on queer theorists' critiques of intimate and administrative violence, especially Gloria Anzaldúa's "intimate terrorism," Sibbett develops methodologies for conceptualizing and subverting violence aimed at queer, racialized, and gendered bodies in this era of surveillance and increasing authoritarianism. Sibbett addresses book bans, anti-trans legislation, idealized histories of westward expansion, and more, examining materials that include public service announcements, advertising, social media, news reports, poems, interviews, and novels. In so doing, she demonstrates the crucial role queer testimonies-and queer histories and queer futures-play in revealing systemic violence and illuminating the transformative potential of everyday resistance.

A long-overdue analysis of how Black lesbians have asserted their lived experience through creative practice, pushing back against heteropatriarchal systems that deny them visibility.

"We Must Document Ourselves Now" examines the essential but oft-ignored importance of Black lesbian literature and film in queer literary and film histories, arguing that Black lesbian cultural texts reflect creators' lived experiences and resist the heteropatriarchal systems that deny Black lesbians visibility in popular culture. Stephanie Andrea Allen contends that these texts have three goals: to lay bare the experiences of Black lesbians in a raced, gendered, classed, and homophobic society; to challenge the notion that claiming Black lesbian identity is marginal or forbidden; and to take care of Black lesbians by bearing witness to their experiences through creative practice.

Insisting that Black feminist creative practice is an integral form of self and community care, Allen weaves analysis of cultural output spanning key sociocultural moments from 1974 to 2020 with interviews with Black lesbian cultural workers. "We Must Document Ourselves Now" examines the Black Arts / Black Power movement, the "boom" in lesbian and gay publishing, the so-called golden era of Black film, and twenty-first-century visual media to demonstrate how representations of Black lesbians, or lack thereof, were vital to constructing a cultural canon that focused on illuminating Black lesbian experiences in the United States.

The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State is an 1884 philosophical treatise by Friedrich Engels. It is partially based on notes by Karl Marx to Lewis H. Morgan's book Ancient Society (1877). The book is an early historical materialist work and is regarded as one of the first major works on family economics.

The writing of The Origin of the Family began in early April 1884, and was completed on 26 May. Engels began work on the treatise after reading Marx's handwritten synopsis of Lewis H. Morgan's Ancient Society; or, Researches in the Lines of Human Progress from Savagery, Through Barbarism to Civilization, first published in London in 1877. Engels believed that Marx had intended to create a critical book-length treatment of the ideas suggested by Morgan, and aimed to produce such a manuscript to fulfill his late comrade's wishes

The Politics of Catholic NGO Networks asks 'Who speaks for the Catholic Church during a humanitarian crisis?' and answers that there is no single voice; only a plurality of Catholic actors whose relationships with the Holy See differ sharply, and whose humanitarian work is shaped as much by internal organisational dynamics and Church politics as by the crises they respond to.This book offers the first comparative study of three of the world's most significant Catholic humanitarian networks: the Caritas confederation, the Jesuit Refugee Service, and the Community of Sant'Egidio, through drawing on over thirty interviews and extensive fieldwork in Rome and the Vatican. Each network occupies a distinct status (dependent, semi-dependent, and independent organisations) in relation to Church hierarchy, producing strikingly different approaches to assisting refugees and forced migrants. Moving between the internal governance of the Church and the external landscape of secular humanitarianism, the book exposes a persistent and more nuanced "religious literacy gap" among UN agencies, donors, and NGOs working alongside faith-based partners. Combining an interpretivist, practitioner-informed methodology at the intersection of IR, religion, and humanitarianism, Dr Intropido directly engaged with diplomats, humanitarian workers, and Church officials, offering both a new theoretical account of religious actors in world politics and a practical checklist for anyone partnering with Catholic humanitarian organisations. The Politics of Catholic NGO Networks will be essential reading for students and scholars of religion and politics, international relations, sociology and anthropology of religion, humanitarian, development, and migration studies, and for practitioners navigating the increasingly visible role of religion in global affairs.
