John Gay was a dramatist and poet, best-known for writing The Beggar's Opera. Through his membership of the Scriblerus Club, Gay developed lasting friendships with Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift and John Arbuthnot, all of whom influenced his writing. Positioning Henry James within his transatlantic and pan-European contexts, Peter Rawlings relocates James and the New Criticism's ideology of organicism in biology rather than in aesthetics. He argues that the novel as a character-driven genre emerged from philosophical and scientific thinking about consciousness and that James's canonization must be reexamined in the context of the philosophical, physiological, and biological discourses on which he drew in his theory and practice as a novelist.

Examining French ideological novels, Louise Lyle charts the development of French hostility towards social Darwinism during the fin de siècle. Lyle argues that the antagonism of a wide range of authors from diverse literary schools was a consequence of and a response to historically specific insecurities relative to the state of the French nation. Grounded in the cultural history of biology, Lyle's study is an important contribution to literature and the history of science.

Social Darwinism in the French Ideological Novel

In 1946 and 1948, James Conway Davies published volumes one and two of his Episcopal Acts and Cognate Documents Relating to Welsh Dioceses 1066-1272. A notice in the front of volume two indicates that volume three - promised for publication in 1950/1 but never released - would have contained inter alia the acts of the dioceses of Bangor and St Asaph and an index of the acts contained in all three volumes. The editor left behind a massive card index and the galley proofs of the acts of St Asaph and Bangor, and it is these that form the basis of the present volume. It therefore completes what is both a monumental study on and source of information for the Church in medieval Wales.
