In the fight for housing, we are caught between the world we know and the world we want. This book is both a road map and a reckoning. Drawing on his own experience of on-the-ground organizing, Samuel Stein presents practical policies for enacting a right to shelter, a right to a home, and a right to the city itself. With raw honesty, he then explores why these visions founder on the rocks of political reality. He reveals the forces blocking our path—from the power of real estate capital to the inadequacy of our institutions—and captures the complex feelings of a left that has lost faith in the future. Written in the heady weeks surrounding Zohran Mamdani’s historic election for New York City mayor, Stein frames the book around the stirring possibilities and structural constraints of a socialist administration in the financial center of a sputtering empire. He opens a space for action in the absence of hope. This is an examination of life and politics at the intersection of optimism and pessimism, nihilism and naivety, faith and doubt—an essential book for activists, planners, and anyone who refuses to accept the housing crisis as inevitable or immutable.

A Right to Housing?

Palgrave Insights into Apocalypse Economics

“Masterfully, McKenzie provides a conceptual toolkit for both researchers and local communities on how to resist wealth chain urbanism.”

“This book offers an intellectual multitool to unlock the inner life of capitalism’s urban investment playgrounds.”

, Chair in Inclusive Societies, University of Sheffield, UK
This book traces the hidden architecture of urban dispossession. From the ghost neighbourhoods of Kensington and Chelsea to the offshore-controlled student housing in Sheffield, it reveals how cities are being retooled not as homes for their residents, but as nodes in a global network of value extraction.Wealth chain urbanism is the name for this system: six interlocking mechanisms that convert communities into commodities. McKenzie introduces the concept of "Digital Plantation", showing how algorithmic systems and surveillance infrastructure reproduce the colonial logics of extraction in the twenty-first-century city. But this book also documents the counter-infrastructure being built by tenant unions, community land trusts, and environmental justice campaigners who refuse to be erased. It issues a radical challenge: reform is a trap. The book envisions a strategy of dual power—tactical fights for survival alongside the construction of autonomous alternatives beyond capital's reach. Essential reading for scholars, activists, policymakers, and anyone who wants to understand (and change) the future of our cities. Rex McKenzie

Wealth Chain Urbanism, Racial Capitalism, and the Struggle for Urban Life

The Extractivist City

Between standards, technology, and cost pressures, building threatens to become purely functional. But when do we feel comfortable in spaces? Why do the walls of some new buildings remain bare? How does one actually design? And is there a hell for architects? This book seeks answers to big and detailed questions about contemporary architecture. Contributions from practitioners, craftsmen, and residents provide insights into everyday design and planning. The focus is on the work of roedig.schop architekten + partner, who have been shaping residential construction in Berlin for 25 years with a consistently user-oriented approach. Their simple but radical claim is that every apartment must be designed in such a way that the designers themselves would want to live in it.With contributions by Julia Dahlhaus, Ulrich Kuhnt, Alexander Schmid, Helga Schmidt-Thomsen, Andrea Roedig, Benedikt Crone, Thomas Sparr, Marc Richter, and Gerd Brendel

Entertaining essays on contemporary architecture

Insights into everyday design and planning, not only for architects

Monograph on the award-winning Berlin-based firm, which became known for its co-housing projects and cost-effective residential buildings

Zehn Fragen zur Architektur der Gegenwart

Will ich da wohnen?

How did America cease to be the land of opportunity? LONGLISTED FOR THE PORCHLIGHT BUSINESS BOOK AWARD We take it for granted that good neighborhoods—with good schools and good housing—are only accessible to the wealthy. But in America, this wasn’t always the case. Though for most of world history, your prospects were tied to where you were born, Americans came up with a revolutionary idea: If you didn’t like your lot in life, you could find a better location and reinvent yourself there. Americans moved to new places with unprecedented frequency, and, for two hundred years, that remarkable mobility was the linchpin of American economic and social opportunity. In this illuminating debut, Yoni Appelbaum, historian and journalist for The Atlantic, shows us that this idea has been under attack since reformers first developed zoning laws to ghettoize Chinese Americans in nineteenth-century Modesto, California. The century of legal segregation that ensued—from the zoning laws enacted to force Jewish workers back into New York’s Lower East Side to the private-sector discrimination and racist public policy that trapped Black families in Flint, Michigan to Jane Jacobs’ efforts to protect her vision of the West Village—has raised housing prices, deepened political divides, emboldened bigots, and trapped generations of people in poverty. Appelbaum shows us that these problems have a common explanation: people can’t move as readily as they used to. They are, in a word, stuck. Cutting through more than a century of mythmaking, Stuck tells a vivid, surprising story of the people and ideas that caused our economic and social sclerosis and lays out common-sense ways to get Americans moving again.

Home for Now erkundet, wie junge Kreative inmitten provisorischer Wohnsituationen neue Formen des Zuhause-Seins entwickeln.

Living Well Without Staying Long

Home For Now

Grounded in personal experience, Eviction uncovers a hidden history of housing injustice and working-class resistance in what has become a perennial battleground for social conflict in modern Britain. In 2017, Jessica Field’s parents and more than a hundred of their neighbours received warning of imminent eviction. Their corporate landlord intended to demolish their affordable, privately rented homes to replace them with middle-class houses for sale. Led by the women of the estate, tenants launched an anti-eviction campaign to save their close-knit community from destruction. The neighbourhood was the last remnant of a 1950s National Coal Board estate constructed to house local miners. When the coal industry declined in the 1970s, whole estates were auctioned off to speculators. Low-income tenants were at the mercy of global investors. Houses were left to rot. Rents soared. Tenants were exploited every step of the way. Yet time and again, tenant activists – especially women – fought back. Eviction is a history of the British housing crisis in microcosm.

Since the global financial crisis of 2008, which was triggered by a real estate crisis, there is a renewed search for alternative forms of housing production that escape speculative interests and are based instead on models of co-ownership, co-production and co-management. Against this backdrop the concept of the cooperative has experienced a true renaissance in recent years. Housing the Co-op shows how cooperative housing construction and forms of self-determined building production offer effective solutions to the global housing crisis. The manifesto and accompanying essays with case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas make a claim that by combining micro-political actions and co-operative practices we can move closer to a systemic change for a more sustainable and equitable future. A glossary of cooperative housing explains important terms.

Renting is a nightmare... Áine should be feeling happy with her life. She's just moved in with Elliot. Their new flat is in an affluent neighbourhood, surrounded by bakeries, yoga studios and organic vegetable shops. They even have a garden. And yet, from the moment they move in, Áine can't shake the sense that there's something not quite right about the place... It's not just the humourless estate agent and nameless landlord: it's the chill that seeps through the draughty windows; the damp spreading from the cellar door; the way the organic fruit and veg never lasts as long as it should. And most of all, it's the upstairs neighbours, whose very presence makes peaceful coexistence very difficult indeed. The longer Áine spends inside the flat - pretending to work from home; dissecting messages from the friends whose lives seem to have moved on without her - the less it feels like home. And as Áine fixates on the cracks in the ceiling, it becomes harder to ignore the cracks in her relationship with Elliott... Brilliantly observed and darkly funny, I Want to Go Home But I'm Already There is a ghost story set in the rental crisis. A wonderfully clear-eyed portrait of loneliness, loss and belonging, it examines what it means to feel at home. 'A deeply compelling and melancholic modern ghost story ... Examines with piercing precision and wry humour the insidiousness, malignancy, and all-encompassing bleakness of the housing market' SUSANNAH DICKEY, AUTHOR OF COMMON DECENCY'Beautifully written, frequently hilarious, and maddeningly real' SEAMAS O'REILLY, AUTHOR OF DID YE HEAR MAMMY DIED'Very funny and original ... Rife with sharply observed but subtle insights on class and money' RACHEL CONNOLLY, AUTHOR OF LAZY CITY'Róisín Lanigan has been threatening to be the next great Irish writer for ages, so I'm glad she's finally sat down and done it' JOEL GOLBY
