Dupuis M: Hortense au-delà des mères

Hortense au-delà des mères

Relationships in trade and investment between Europe, the United States, and sub-Saharan Africa have long been asymmetrical, marked by systemic overcharges, underpayments, and exploitative practices. This book highlights a concept called kleptomation: a systematic, sustained theft of labor, resources, and wealth. Chapters examine the depth, breadth, and persistence of this economic injustice, exploring the inauthentic accumulation of wealth on the part of the West over the course of several hundred years. In the book, economist Richard F. America proposes a unified framework for reparations to address centuries of wrongful enrichment, illicit transactions, and hidden subsidies that have fueled Western prosperity. This framework is clearly defined and grounded in redistributive economic justice. Acknowledging previous attempts to repair the damage caused by kleptomation, this book presents a 40-year plan that international development executives, policymakers, and program managers can use to scale up capital transfers for development programs in Africa.Drawing on historical analysis and contemporary policy debates, the book exposes flaws in international trade accounting that obscure the true scale of wealth extraction. It calls for sustained capital transfers and structural reforms to recover unjust enrichment and accelerate Africa’s development over the next four decades. The resulting resource provides practical guidance for policymakers, development practitioners, and global institutions—including the World Bank, the European Union, the African Union, and civil society—seeking to end chronic poverty and achieve broadly shared prosperity within 40 years.Richard F. America
is Professor of Practice Emeritus in the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. His research focuses on community reinvestment and investing in Africa. He is the author of numerous books and scholarly and professional articles. His seminal article, “What Do You

People Want?” (Harvard Business Review, 1969), helped set the stage for the ongoing discussion of a form of reparations in the United States. His work in Africa has focused on improving management education, impact investing, and corporate philanthropy, strengthening African business schools, and expanding local and community-based economic development. He is the editor of
Accounting for Colonialism
(Palgrave Macmillan, 2024).

Palgrave Studies in Technology and Innovation in Africa

Over the past two decades, Southern African countries have gained increasing recognition in global agricultural markets, yet they continue to face significant internal and external challenges. Domestically, low productivity, limited production capacity, and weak trade structures constrain agricultural growth and competitiveness. Externally, restricted access to agricultural finance and modern technologies, together with institutional limitations, further impede progress. Moreover, climate change disproportionately affects farming systems across the region, intensifying vulnerability and food insecurity. This contributed volume brings together scholarly research on sustainable food systems in Southern Africa, key challenges to sustainability, and the policy frameworks shaping the region’s agricultural transformation. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of sustainability, the rural economy, food supply chains and agritech, as well as on business in Africa more broadly.Tanyaradzwa Rukasha

Research in International Studies, Africa Series

Resourceful Kingdoms investigates the struggle for control over Uganda’s emerging oil sector, centering on the Bunyoro Kingdom’s unsuccessful effort to secure ownership of resources discovered on its ancestral lands. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, the book shows how the military-backed National Resistance Movement government consolidated authority over an estimated two billion barrels of oil, while Bunyoro communities experienced displacement, land loss, political tension, and significant environmental harm even before production began. The Bunyoro case reflects a wider pattern in which rural, resource-rich populations across Africa are marginalized as governments and multinational corporations convert natural resources into state-centered revenues. The book further explores how indigenous kingdoms might come to own resources and channel revenues toward sustainable, culturally grounded development. Through comparative case studies of Uganda’s powerful Buganda Kingdom and South Africa’s Bafokeng Kingdom-widely recognized for community-based mineral ownership and effective wealth management-Resourceful Kingdoms illustrates how traditional institutions can pair with corporate structures, private land ownership, and diversified investment strategies to strengthen community prosperity. From this analysis emerges strategic coexistence, a new framework that outlines how kingdoms can secure resource rights independent of shifting state policies or corporate social-responsibility initiatives. Presented as both a philosophy and a set of practical steps, strategic coexistence urges kingdoms to formalize land ownership, build strong indigenous governance systems, create community-owned corporations, reinvest resource revenues in long-term development, and transition away from dependence on extractive industries. Resourceful Kingdoms ultimately repositions African kingdoms as dynamic, contemporary governance institutions with significant potential to influence natural resource administration and advance community well-being.

Challenges and Opportunities for Retailers

Digital Consumer Behaviour in South Africa

This book provides a clear, systems-level blueprint for fixing Africa’s housing crisis by rebuilding the mortgage and housing finance infrastructure that makes large-scale homeownership possible. Rather than treating housing as a construction or subsidy problem, it reframes the crisis as a failure of financial architecture.
Across Africa, millions of homes are needed, demand is real, and capital exists, yet housing delivery remains slow, expensive, and exclusionary. The missing link is the absence of integrated mortgage origination systems that can translate households, land, and projects into financeable assets. Without long-term mortgages, developers build only for cash buyers, banks lend defensively, and cities expand informally.
Drawing on firsthand experience in the U.S. mortgage industry and deep engagement with African housing markets, the book examines structural barriers including short loan tenors, high interest rates, fragmented land systems, weak credit recognition, expensive capital, and disconnected institutions. It will be of interest to researchers and practitioners of housing finance.

Women Entrepreneurs in East Africa
