Studienkurs Soziale Arbeit

Dies sind u.a. Geschlechtervielfalt, Familie, Liebe, Gewalt, Raum, Sozialisation, Rechtsextremismus.

This is a clear, compelling guide to improving racial literacy in schools and communities, demonstrating how making that investment can transform our education system. Exploring the ability to understand race, racism and anti-racism as an effective tool for recognising and challenging racism, educators and learners will find opportunities to develop their racial literacy through a range of practical activities. These form part of an ongoing journey of learning, using the impact of De Montfort University's Stephen Lawrence Research Centre. This specific, focused approach places the book's advice and ideas - from decolonising the curriculum and anti-racist educator training to student ambassadors and open dialogue - squarely within the historical context of race and education in the UK. By working through the nuance of racial consciousness and towards a fair and equitable society it stands as a productive counterpoint to the conventional wisdom of how to 'solve' racism. This is essential reading for anyone committed to achieving social justice and racial equity in our education system.

Genders and Sexualities in the Social Sciences

“This thoughtfully curated collection of interdisciplinary essays not only interrogates Western understandings of feminist resistance but also challenges conventional understandings of the South Asian subcontinent as a motley crew of postcolonial states. Revealing it instead as a dynamic region marked by a variety of interconnected activisms. Taken together, the editor’s and authors’ feminist and critical regional South Asian lens on ideas and representations of gender and sexuality as well as movements, policies, and everyday experiences pertaining to gender and sexuality offer us invaluable fresh perspectives that help us re-envision linkages between the global, regional, and local.” —Elora Shehabuddin, Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies, University of California, Berkeley, USA
“South Asia’s rich tradition of multiplicity in gender, colonialism and postcolonial, law, culture and economy, new patterns of gender politics, grassroots organizing, key legal cases, violence, migration, media and state strategies are all illuminated in this valuable collection of studies from six countries.” —Raewyn Connell, University of Sydney, Australia
“Drawing on ethnographic, historical, and theoretical legacies of gender diversity authors offer nuanced, original, and complex enactments of identities and activist social movements in South Asia. A provocative and valuable contribution to decolonizing studies of gender and sexuality”. —Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Distinguished Professor and Chair, Women’s and Gender Studies, Syracuse University, USA
This edited volume is a decolonial/deconstructive approach to South Asian gender and sexuality studies, which it reimagines through a pluralized, multivariate lens. It decenters hegemonic feminist debates and rearticulates gender and sexuality through critical regionalism, border-politics, land and social movements, indigeneity, law and jurisprudence and broader social textuality. Chapters offer perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, public health, international relations and law, as well as organizers and advocates committed to women and gender studies.

New Gender Politics in South Asia

Kulturwissenschaftliche Diversity Studies

This book reimagines gender-based poverty in urban areas as a human rights issue, offering a transformative legal framework to address one of the most pressing and overlooked challenges of our time. More than half the world's population now lives in cities, with women comprising a growing share of the urban population/residents/people living in urban areas. Yet gender-based poverty remains a persistent and under-addressed issue in international human rights law. No existing convention explicitly tackles the intersection of gender, poverty, and urbanisation. This book breaks new ground by arguing that gender-based poverty in urban areas can - and should - be recognised as a human rights violation. Drawing on legal theory, feminist legal studies, and international human rights frameworks, the book critiques current legal approaches that treat poverty as a social or moral issue, rather than a structural and multidimensional injustice. It advances Sandra Fredman's four-dimensional model of substantive equality - disadvantage, recognition, participation, and transformation - as a more effective legal lens. Focusing on the right to adequate housing, the book explores how states' obligations to respect, protect, and fulfil can be clarified and strengthened through this model. It also examines how principles of equality and non-discrimination interact with progressive realisation and economic, social, and cultural rights. By bridging theory and practice, and incorporating perspectives from the Global South, the book offers a timely and original contribution to human rights law. It provides legal professionals, scholars, and development practitioners with a powerful framework for embedding gender equality in urban policy and advancing social justice through law.

Human Rights Obligations and Gender-Based Poverty in Urban Areas

"Both a grief book that doesn't read like a clinician's notes and a memoir wrapped around a bigger subject, All My Dead Cats takes grief from the taboo to the universal." — BooklistHave you suffered a loss? How was your life changed by the grief you experienced? Mourning is a personal experience and shouldn't be judged. There are no do-overs in death, but there are do-betters.All My Dead Cats is not a book about pet loss. You will meet award-winning journalist and debut author s.e. smith’s cats and read small slices of their stories. Their vignettes serve as an opening to scary conversations about loss, so grief can feel less intimidating and more relatable. This is a book about grief and mourning as collective activities best undertaken in community. S.e. interviews dozens of experts—from death doulas to funeral home directors to therapists and psychologists—and discusses the different stages of grief. The shared perspectives help us understand that grief is not fixable but it can be livable. They teach us that if we have the courage, which begins with honest conversations about how we navigate grief, then we can learn how to do better. After reading you'll better understand:

Disenfranchised grief and how you can be part of the solution and not the problem

How to be an advocate for people subjected to trauma and violence

The stages of grief and how to process your experiences

Grief is not over once the body is neatly disposed of, the rubble of the house has been taken away in dumpsters, the final fit on the prosthesis is done, the law is passed and withstands legal challenges, or when the permanent peace is brokered. It is an ongoing shift in our relationship to the world, and one that deserves attention and care as well as time and space to be amongst fellow mourners, to whom we do not need to justify or explain, because they understand where we are.Readers will feel seen rather than being chastised for how they grieve and better understand how to process mourning--and how to help others. All My Dead Cats provides an entry point, by beginning the conversation about a beloved pet, so readers can think about the larger stakes of death and live a more fulfilled life.

“The go-to guy on minimum wage” (Nobel Laureate and New York Times bestselling author Paul Krugman) tackles one of the thorniest social issues of our times—income inequality—from a new vantage point with field-leading economics. How did the labor market stop working for so many in the workforce? Why did wages at the bottom and in the middle of the pay scale fail to keep up with a growing economy that delivered over 70 percent productivity gains and soaring incomes for those at the top? What caused this divergence, and what can we do about it now? The Wage Standard is a deep dive into these very questions—questions Arin Dube has explored in over two decades of influential research. Painting a new picture with data, Dube shows us how wages for most workers became painfully frozen. But also, he argues, this fate was not inevitable, and more importantly, that it can be reversed. The Wage Standard lays bare how the labor market really works, revealing levers to pull to shift course: to reshape corporate decisions, rethink policy priorities, and rebalance economic power and social norms to better protect the typical worker. These are the keys to unlocking broad-based prosperity. Dube delivers a hopeful message. First, chances are, you deserve a raise. And second, it’s not necessary to fix the broken politics of Washington, DC, in order to get one. Political will, public engagement, and persistence can set a new standard to reset the labor market and improve the lives of American workers starting today. In fact, signs of progress are already offering a glimpse of what a fairer economy can and will look like.

This powerful guide draws on strategies from Black resistance movements and merges historical wisdom with modern technology to combat the DEI backlash and build sustainable workplace equity in today’s hostile climate. As the unprecedented backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion intensifies—with corporations dismantling initiatives, lawmakers passing anti-DEI legislation, and post–George Floyd promises abandoned—this tactical handbook arms advocates with revolutionary resistance strategies drawn from Black historical movements. Dr. Janice Gassam Asare transforms centuries of Black resistance wisdom—from Underground Railroad networks to civil rights organizing tactics—into modern resistance plans, wielding ethical AI as a force multiplier to create sustainable change that outlasts corporate whims and political cycles. Each chapter grounds modern workplace tactics in revolutionary approaches of more than twenty prominent Black historical figures, including the following:

Ida B. Wells—Documentation techniques for workplace injustice inspired by her work

Ella Baker and Fred Hampton—Coalition-building methods from the American civil rights movement

Toni Morrison and Angela Davis—Narrative control strategies drawn from their celebrated writing

Whether you’re a DEI practitioner navigating corporate pushback, an employee experiencing equity rollbacks, or a leader committed to sustainable inclusion, this handbook provides battle-tested strategies for preserving workplace equity—even in hostile environments. This isn’t just about surviving the backlash. It’s about reimagining workplaces where everyone thrives.

Rachel Locke
