Die Public Health Humanities verstehen Gesundheit und Krankheit als kulturell und sozial geprägte Phänomene. Sie ergänzen die empirisch orientierte Multidisziplin Public Health um geisteswissenschaftliche und künstlerische Perspektiven. Dabei fragen sie nach der Bedeutung des Künstlerischen für die Gesundheit, interessieren sich für moralische, soziale und kulturelle Dimensionen von Gesundheit und Krankheit in Kunst bzw. Medien und bieten theoretische Zugänge für gesundheitliche Analysen an. Bezugsdisziplinen sind u.a. Kunst-, Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften, Philosophie und Geschichte. Die Beiträger*innen leuchten das Spektrum unterschiedlicher Perspektiven und Zugänge der Public Health Humanities erstmals auf Deutsch aus.

Building on the success of the first and second editions, the updated third edition of the Handbook of Epidemiology serves as a major reference for all researchers who want to conduct epidemiological studies or who want to deepen their understanding of epidemiological concepts, methods, and areas of application. The new edition provides an update of all chapters of the second edition and includes additional new chapters to account for recent developments in the field. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the field and covers basic approaches as well as novel and advanced methodologies with a strong applied focus by integrating the most relevant state-of-the-art knowledge that otherwise could only be gathered from single specialist publications dispersed over various scientific journals. Im Vordergrund dieses Buches stehen die Analyse und die Bewertung klinischer Studien mit dem Ziel, den Nutzen medizinischer Maßnahmen zu definieren und die Ergebnisse der Nutzen-Analysen auf die Kosten abzubilden. Das Buch beginnt mit Kapiteln über die Methoden von Kosten-Nutzen-Analysen und Verfahren der Evidenz-basierten Medizin. Der Darstellung von biometrischen Methoden und Bewertungskriterien folgt die Präsentation zahlreicher klinischer Studien vorwiegend unter Einbeziehung von Kosten-Nutzen-Analysen. Klausur-und Übungsaufgaben werden in den Text integriert. Kosten-Nutzen-Analysen stellen in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften eine entscheidende Bewertungsgrundlage dar. Dies gilt auch für die Gesundheitsökonomie und die Bewertung medizinischer Maßnahmen. Against the background of great expectations associated with the application of big data and artificial intelligence in medicine, various voices have claimed that individuals have a moral obligation to make their data and tissue available for research. This obligation is not only associated with the amounts of materials required in contemporary medical science, but also with presumptions that the knowledge produced in science is a public good. This book critically examines this claim by drawing on four case studies of medical data and tissue collections: the Framingham Heart Study in the United States; the Singapore Tissue Network; the Million Death Study in India; and the European network of sample and data collections BBMRI-ERIC. Each case study is presented as an exemplar for how infrastructures for the purpose of collecting, storing and using population data for medical research are constructed and frame particular versions of ‘collective goods’ in contemporary medical research. While each of these cases is situated in different geographic locations and largely distinct areas of medical research, they jointly illustrate how the making and operations of medical research collections produce particular ‘collectives’ and ‘goods’. This book discusses the making of such collective goods in terms of citizenship to interrogate how the framing of medical research collections generates forms of knowledge that already attribute certain (health-related) rights and responsibilities to different groups of people.
