Palgrave Studies in Sub-National Governance

This book examines local refugee integration policies in Western Europe, focusing on small and medium-sized towns and rural areas. Applying an innovative cross-country comparative approach, it maps and compares integration policies targeting humanitarian migrants in 36 localities across seven countries – Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy and Austria. It also analyses the drivers and effects of local policymaking processes in this field. The book challenges the dominant view that migration policymaking tends to be pragmatic and oriented at problem-solving. Rather, it shows that local integration policies are largely shaped by political factors, including the political affiliations of local governments, the presence and strength of radical right parties, and the dynamics of multilevel party politics. In doing so, the book throws new light on migration policymaking in small European localities, contributing to a field dominated by studies of big cities and metropolitan areas.Tiziana Caponio

Bastian lebt in seiner eigenen Welt.

Hanau, 19.

Are digital technologies really a silver bullet for development in the Global South?

Digital technologies are supposed to solve the challenges of climate change, projected population growth, land conflicts and food insecurity, especially in rural areas. Yet NGOs, government institutions, and private companies are increasingly adopting a trial-and-error approach as they recognize the limitations of transferring Western science and technologies to the global South.

This book presents the ambivalent practices and implications of digital pilot projects which aim to 'develop' both farming communities and locally adapted innovations in East Africa. Inspired by laboratory ethnographies in Science and Technology Studies, it explores the practices of testing and developing digital technologies in rural Tanzania. The multi-sited ethnography, which takes in agricultural fairs, conferences, documents, online courses, tech hubs, project offices, villages and fields, centres on three case studies, namely DAST (a digital land-formalisation tool), STAS (an AI system for agricultural productivity) and iPlus (an e-extension tool). Rather than viewing these technologies simply as welcome tools to promote connectivity, empowerment and increased production - as commonly advanced in development policy - this book foregrounds the (un)intended consequences of the planning, set-up, maintenance and results of digital pilot projects. Against the backdrop of conflicting logics between testing technologies and developing Tanzanian agriculture through them, this book considers their (un)predictable impacts on new actors, the character of development and the trial communities in rural Tanzania.

Routledge Studies in Religion and Politics

The Politics of Catholic NGO Networks asks 'Who speaks for the Catholic Church during a humanitarian crisis?' and answers that there is no single voice; only a plurality of Catholic actors whose relationships with the Holy See differ sharply, and whose humanitarian work is shaped as much by internal organisational dynamics and Church politics as by the crises they respond to.This book offers the first comparative study of three of the world's most significant Catholic humanitarian networks: the Caritas confederation, the Jesuit Refugee Service, and the Community of Sant'Egidio, through drawing on over thirty interviews and extensive fieldwork in Rome and the Vatican. Each network occupies a distinct status (dependent, semi-dependent, and independent organisations) in relation to Church hierarchy, producing strikingly different approaches to assisting refugees and forced migrants. Moving between the internal governance of the Church and the external landscape of secular humanitarianism, the book exposes a persistent and more nuanced "religious literacy gap" among UN agencies, donors, and NGOs working alongside faith-based partners. Combining an interpretivist, practitioner-informed methodology at the intersection of IR, religion, and humanitarianism, Dr Intropido directly engaged with diplomats, humanitarian workers, and Church officials, offering both a new theoretical account of religious actors in world politics and a practical checklist for anyone partnering with Catholic humanitarian organisations. The Politics of Catholic NGO Networks will be essential reading for students and scholars of religion and politics, international relations, sociology and anthropology of religion, humanitarian, development, and migration studies, and for practitioners navigating the increasingly visible role of religion in global affairs.

Studies in National Governance and Emerging Technologies

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of cybersecurity governance and policymaking in the European Union. It considers how cybersecurity policy is implemented by policymakers and public administrators at EU and member-state level, the strengths and weaknesses of EU cybersecurity policy, and how the EU's approach to cybersecurity is distinct from other global actors. In doing so, the book not only advances our understanding of the EU’s cybersecurity governance but also provides a framework for evaluating its relevance and adaptability in a rapidly changing global landscape. It will appeal to scholars and students of public policy, cybersecurity, and EU governance, as well as practitioners.Francesco Amoretti
