This book examines policy interventions ranging from those related to finance and tenure to building materials and processes. Urbanization is growing in both developed and developing countries. The proportion of the world’s urban population is expected to increase to about 57% by 2050, and the share of Africa's urban population is project to increase to 60% by the same year. As a result of this phenomenal growth in urban population, urbanization and urban poverty have begun to dominate the development discourse again after years of focusing on rural development.
Housing is a crucial issue for the urban poor, who are often concentrated in informal settlements that often do not have sufficient access to infrastructure, health, and education services. The urban poor overwhelmingly lack land to build their own houses or access to financing that would allow them to purchase or build homes. Furthermore, housing provision has largely fallen to central governments, and policy has largely overlooked the capacity of the urban poor—as individuals and communities—to provide housing for themselves.
This book engages these challenges and assumptions, offering insight into political, economic, environmental, and financial frameworks that can help facilitate adequate housing options. Drawing on examples from 14 case studies across sub-Saharan Africa, these contributions center the urban poor in initiatives to develop housing infrastructure, offering lessons for researchers and governments looking to address an ever-escalating housing crisis.

Die Arbeit an seiner Bunker-Archäologie machte Paul Virilio (1932-2018) zu dem Autor, als den man ihn heute kennt. Als er in der zweiten Hälfte der 1950er Jahre begann, die verlassenen Bunker- anlagen aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entlang der französischen Atlantikküste zu fotografieren, war er als Kunst-Glaser tätig. 1966 trat er in der Zeitschrift architecture principe, deren Mitheraus- geber er war, erstmals mit seinen Fotografien an die Öffentlichkeit. Damals interessierten ihn vor allem die architektonischen Aspekte dieser Kriegsbauten. Er las die Bunker als "Vorboten einer neuen Architektur", die er mit dem Begriff der Kryptischen Architektur zu fassen suchte. 1975 zeigte das Centre Pompidou in seiner Gründungsphase Virilios Bunker-Archäologie erstmals in einer Ausstellung. Parallel dazu erschien sein bahnbrechendes Buch, in dem alle Motive seines philosophischen Denkens bereits angelegt sind: militärischer Raum und Kommunikationskrieg, Täuschung und Beschleunigung, akribische Lektüre der Gegenwart und Lust an philosophischer Spekulation. Auch knapp 50 Jahre nach seiner Erstveröffentlichung bleibt die Bunker-Archäologie ein Werk voller Bezüge zur Gegenwart. Anlässlich einer Ausstellung im Centre Pompidou erscheint eine Neuedition in deutscher, englischer und französischer Sprache.

Fundamentaltheologie ist gefordert, das intellektuelle Gewissen der Theologie zu Gehör zu bringen. Sie weiß sich von immer wieder neuen Anfragen an Voraussetzungen, Zielsetzungen und Verfahren der Theologie herausgefordert, die wissenschaftliche und die kirchliche Legitimität der Theologie aufzuweisen. Wie kann es ihr gelingen, beim Eingehen auf die jeweils aktuellen Diskurse bei ihrer Sache zu bleiben und das spezifisch theo-logische&nbsp;Vorgehen verständlich zu machen? In diesem Band sind Beiträge zusammengefasst, die ein hermeneutisches Konzept empfehlen und in der aktuellen wissenschaftstheoretischen Diskussion verteidigen. Zugleich plädieren sie für eine theologische Methoden-Konsequenz, die sich auch der kirchlichen Verpflichtung der Theologie stellt und daraus abgeleitete Ansprüche des kirchlichen Lehramts kritisch-differenzierend einordnet. Und sie wissen sich der Aufgabe verpflichtet, Glaubenden in ihren Problemen mit der Glaubwürdigkeit und Glaubbarkeit der kirchlichen Verkündigung eine Verstehens-Hilfe anzubieten.

This book addresses the various challenges that arose during the two periods of Indonesian President Jokowi's administration. These included the global economic crisis, increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics, such as competition between major powers, the Covid-19 pandemic and its ramifications for Indonesia, as well as issues of border disputes, human trafficking, and the situation in Palestine. Addressing these challenges necessitates a forward-thinking Indonesian foreign policy strategy. Few figures of the nineteenth century were more influential than Richard Wagner, and few works of art have the scope and historical significance of The Ring of the Nibelung. Wagner himself said that it expressed his entire philosophy of life. Yet little attention has been paid to him as a philosopher, aesthetic theories aside. Instead, the Ring has been viewed in the light of Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, or even Hegel. Wagner's own ideas do not deserve this neglect, and this book addresses that omission. This book presents the results of a Hong Kong study that focused on refugees’ contributions, and potential, to support green urban development. It describes education about sustainability principles in non-formal skills development settings, and the benefits of this learning for refugees.

International studies highlight the importance of skills development for disadvantaged groups so they can effectively integrate into accepting societies. However, developing green skills that can help refugees engage in sustainability efforts in new settlements is new and proved successful in our Hong Kong study.

Theoretical and practical angles are used to explore the topic and emphasize the importance of a transformative design for skills development programs for disadvantaged groups as an educational response towards challenges of sustainable urban development. The book discusses the interplay between opportunity structures, agency, and the gendered experience and outlines the results of skills training on three levels – personal, community and society. This book applies a novel approach in searching for a positive view on refugees and their role in society.

The book also highlights social entrepreneurship and its impact on the personal and community levels, following skills training, in terms of behavioural change and participation in society’s sustainability efforts. Simon Marx deals with the approach of Ecological Analysis of Law and thus with the question of how legally regulated human behaviour affects the natural foundations of life. He suggests a consequences-oriented approach in two steps. While respecting the primacy of legislative decisions, ecological impacts of state legal acts are supposed to be analysed and evaluated on the basis of the criteria of resource sufficiency and resource consistency, taking into account conflicting interests in resource conservation and resource use. The aim is to implement the mandate for socio-technical transformation articulated by the Federal Constitutional Court through appropriately adapted legislation and legal application. Building on this, interdisciplinary solutions are to be developed that ensure liveable conditions without imposing disproportionate restrictions on the exercise of fundamental rights.
