Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. Slowing Down Memory Studies

Since independence in 1980, the lives of Zimbabweans have been inextricably linked to the nation's turbulent political landscape. Central to this narrative is the post-2000 rivalry between the ruling ZANU-PF - led by Robert Mugabe and later Emmerson Mnangagwa - and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Despite the MDC's eventual fragmentation, Morgan Tsvangirai and his successor, Nelson Chamisa, remained the defining figures of the opposition. While ZANU-PF's electoral victories have frequently been marred by documented allegations of fraud and violence, this volume offers a nuanced, holistic analysis. It argues that the opposition itself shoulders significant responsibility for its failures, providing a critical counter-perspective on 21st-century Zimbabwean power struggles. This book explores multicultural religious interactions in Ancient Central and South Asia. Besides encompassing a vast chronological and geographical range, the themes of this book represent a broad illustration of the current main approaches, methodologies, and perspectives on Ancient Central and South Asia studies, including the establishment of new sacred spaces; the introduction of new rituals, ceremonies, and convivial practices; archaeological evidence for religious interaction, coexistence, and conflict, among others. In this book, archaeologists, historians, art historians, and linguists come together to demonstrate the intensity and complexity of cultural interactions within the religious landscape from the fourth century BCE till the fourth century CE.

Moving beyond traditional approaches of acculturation, the book reveals the dynamics between cultures and emphasizes local agencies in selecting and appropriating religious praxis, thus highlighting not only the impact of religious interactions but also the wider cultural impact of human interactions. The book provides both specialist and non-specialist audiences with new data and fresh perspectives regarding interactions between cultures in Ancient Central and South Asia, in turn allowing us to comprehend similar nodes of interactions within the modern context. Die 'Zeitschrift für Kultur- und Kollektivwissenschaft' ist ein Forum, das auf der Grundlage der Kulturwissenschaft eine Kollektivwissenschaft entwickeln möchte. Diese angestrebte neue Disziplin lenkt den Blick auf das Kollektiv als Kulturträger und dient damit zum einen der praktischen Kulturforschung und gewährt zum anderen neuartige Einblicke in das Wesen des Sozialen. Der weit gefasste Begriff des Kollektivs tritt an die Stelle der traditionellen Gruppen- und Gesellschaftskonzepte und macht bisher verborgene Schichten menschlicher Gemeinschaftlichkeit zugänglich. Heft 11/2 widmet sich der Rolle von Kollektivität in einem von individueller Genialität geprägten Feld: der Kunst. Anhand von Chören, Jazz-Bands, Musikfestivals, dem Kollektiv ruangrupa, Designmoden, Filmen und Architekturkonzepten gehen die Beiträger*innen der Frage nach, welche besonderen Herausforderungen die kollektive künstlerische Kooperation birgt, wie diese Kooperation künstlerisch adressiert wird und was sich bei ihrer Reflexion über Kollektivität im Allgemeinen erfahren lässt.

Studies in Private International Law

This book examines the convergences, divergences and reciprocal lessons that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)share with one another in developing the principles of private international law.


The chapters provide a thematic understanding of the cornerstones of private international law in each of the BRICS countries: namely, (1) the procedure to initiate claims in civil and commercial matters, (2) the law that would govern such matters in litigation and arbitration, as well as (3) the mechanism to recognise and enforce foreign judgments and arbitral awards.


Written by leading private international law scholars and practitioners, the chapters draw on domestic legislation and its interpretation through cases decided by the courts in each of these emerging economies, and explicitly cover the rules applicable in contractual and non-contractual concerns and issues of choice of court agreements. Issues around marriage, divorce, matrimonial property, succession and surrogacy are also addressed, considering the implication of such aspects through the increased movement of persons.


The book is a useful comparative resource for the governments of the BRICS countries, legislators, traders, academics, researchers and students looking for an in-depth discussion of the reciprocal lessons that these countries may have to offer one another on these issues.
