'The Mysterious Mr. Nakamotocould be the best mystery story of the past twenty years. I'm not sure whether Ben Wallace should win a Pulitzer, be institutionalized for taking on this massive project, or both.' -James Patterson
'This is, by far, the deepest investigation into possibly the biggest mystery of the 21st century. I couldn't put it down.'-Mark Manson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k

In October 2008, someone going by the name Satoshi Nakamoto posted a white paper outlining 'a peer-to-peer electronic cash system' called Bitcoin to an arcane listserv populated by Cypherpunks. No one in the community had heard of Nakamoto, and just as people were starting to wonder who he was, he vanished. As the years passed, and the scope of Nakamoto's achievement became clear, the truth of his identity grew into the

greatest unsolved mystery of our time.
The Mysterious Mr Nakamoto traces Benjamin Wallace's attempt to unmask the figure behind the currency and the world it wrought. Nakamoto's Bitcoin at first seemed destined to fulfill the dreams of fringe 1990s utopians for a currency set free from governments and big banks. Yet after he disappeared, his creation took on a strange new life in the financial markets, where rampant speculation fuelled a vision of crypto as a potential windfall, inviting charlatans and scammers and opening a vast gulf between Bitcoin's idealistic origins and its troubled reputation.

But who was Nakamoto? Whoever he was could rightly claim to have invented one of the most important technologies of the new century. And Nakamoto was a billionaire - his Bitcoin wallet held an untouched eleven-figure fortune waiting to be claimed.

New York Times bestselling author Benjamin Wallace presents a page-turning work of investigative journalism. Tracking leads from London to Oslo to Los Angeles, from coastal Australia to the Arizona desert, he takes readers through a rogues' gallery tour of Nakamoto suspects - from benevolent geniuses like cryptographer Hal Finney to difficult ones like a reclusive polymath known to his followers only as Jim; from the mercurial Australian Craig Wright, who claims to be Nakamoto, to a secret team at the National Security Agency. With the forensic skill of Sherlock Holmes and the storytelling verve of Arthur Conan Doyle, Wallace follows the trail of computer code and personal writings to the heart of the Nakamoto mystery while interrogating the very nature of mystery itself.

Law and Criminology (R0)

Mental Health, Crime and Justice brings together original and state of the art contributions from theoretical, empirical, and policy-related scholarship concerned with the ways people with mental health illnesses are understood, ‘managed’, ‘controlled’ and responded to. Drawing on critical scholarship from a variety of disciplines, the collection pays careful attention to the controversial relationship between mental health and crime, as well as key issues relating to justice and social harm. It presents a synthesis of discipline-specific approaches, from law, psychiatry, sociology, and criminology, but will also bridge together developments in both theory and practice.

The book explores the relationship between mental health and crime by deconstructing and analysing two important facets of the justice system: (1) the various ways in which people with mental disorder navigate and are navigated through the criminal justice (and forensic mental health) system(s); and (2) how so called ‘problematised populations’ are governed, with a particular emphasis on mental health as an unfolding dimension of social harm.

Unique to this volume, well-rehearsed debates are cross-examined with contemporary critiques about social harm and justice. By considering the multifaceted dimensions of violence to include ‘gendered’, ‘structural’, and ‘systemic’, this book provides a nuanced insight that exposes the controversial relationship that is said to exist between mental health and crime. The collection seeks to highlight the harm and injustice that people with mental health disorders are subject to when interacting with the criminal justice system.

Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Law - Criminal process, Criminology, Law Enforcement, grade: A, , course: Criminal Law, language: English, abstract: The point of discussion of this paper is to have a detailed overview of the criminal justice system of Pakistan. It begins with the understanding of the criminal justice system as a general. I would briefly dilate upon several components that constitute and become part and parcel of the criminal justice system of Pakistan; and of course, the objectives of the criminal justice system. Also, this paper penned down the stages of crime. Principles arising out of various case laws related to the administration of justice have been provided. Also, the legal basis of the criminal justice system of Pakistan will be laid down. This paper will explain the landmark criminal case: Mst. Sughran Bibi v The State. I would not have done justice to the subject-matter of the case in hand had if I not touch the topic of F.I.R as this case has direct relevance to the concept of F.I.R. I would throw light upon the judgment with regard to the rule of law and its impact on the judicial system of Pakistan. Furthermore, it will be discussed how the current system is flawed. In addition to that this paper will do a comparison between criminal justice of Pakistan with developed states. In the end, it’ll give a hand full of recommendations to reform the criminal justice system of Pakistan. Relevant case laws have been cited.

In The One, particle physicist Heinrich Päs presents a bold idea: fundamentally, everything in the universe is an aspect of one unified whole. This idea, called monism, has a rich 3,000-year history: Plato believed that 'all is one', but monism was later rejected as irrational and suppressed as a heresy by the medieval Church. Nevertheless, monism persisted, inspiring Enlightenment science and Romantic poetry. Päs shows how monism could inspire physics today, how it could slice through the intellectual stagnation that has bogged down progress in modern physics and help science achieve the 'grand theory of everything' that it has been chasing for decades. Blending physics, philosophy, and the history of ideas, The One is an epic, mind-expanding journey through millennia of human thought and into the nature of reality itself.

How an Ancient Idea Holds the Future of Physics

The One

Today, criminal investigation doesn't just rely on smoking guns and witnesses - police investigators also engage with the mysterious, invisible world of forensic evidence. But what exactly is the science behind this evidence and the methods used to procure and analyse it?In this accessible and entertaining book, Sanjukta Mondal lifts the petri dish lid on this murky world, revealing how scientific methods have become essential weapons in the arsenal of the modern police. With the help of references to TV show forensics, the book explores topics such as DNA profiling and toxicology and brings in notable successes - and blunders - from the real world. This is an enlightening read, whether you're a budding Sherlock Holmes or have simply always wondered just how exactly a misplaced fingerprint or lost hair can lead to a successful prosecution.

The Extraordinary Life of a Joburg Dope Smuggler

High Times

I love puzzles, and finding answers is the only truly enjoyable part of what I do.' This is because Professor Patricia Wiltshire is a forensic ecologist, her days spent at crime scenes collecting samples, standing over dead bodies in a mortuary, or looking down her microscope for evidence. Nature has given us a messy, imperfect world, but her job is to help make sense of it when we need it to most. A pioneer of forensic ecology - using the natural world to help solve crimes - Patricia has been involved in some of the most high-profile murder cases. Not only does she help the police solve crimes and give answers to the most bemusing circumstances, she can help to exonerate the innocent and enable confessions from the guilty. Working at the interface of where the criminal and natural world interact, Patricia will show us how she finds the answers to some of the worst crimes imaginable.Through a study of her most infamous cases, we join Patricia in putting the puzzle together, teasing the evidence out of her cases - 'a garden came out of his hair' - and showing us all how life and death have always been, and always will be, intertwined. But how do you find justice for a mother who has lost her daughter in the most horrific of circumstances? How does she face the very worst of humanity's crimes, and the weight of responsibility to the victims and those they leave behind?
