Von den 'Meistern des Mangels' zu den Hoffnungsträgern der Marktwirtschaft.Wirtschaft in der DDR - das waren nicht nur die volkseigenen Kombinate, HO-Geschäfte und Genossenschaften, sondern auch eine Vielzahl kleiner privater Handwerksbetriebe, die in der Mangelwirtschaft Reparaturen, Dienstleistungen und Waren anboten. Als letzte Überreste privaten Wirtschaftens wurden sie nach dem Fall der Mauer unversehens zu Hoffnungsträgern der Transformation. Trotz enormer Risiken behaupteten sich erstaunlich viele von ihnen in der Marktwirtschaft. Eine Welle von Neugründungen und die Abwicklung der großen VEBs hatten zur Folge, dass in den frühen 1990er Jahren mehr Ostdeutsche im Handwerk arbeiteten als in der Industrie.

This book offers an anthropological inquiry into the labor underpinning immigration detention in Sweden, examining the daily practices, institutional efforts, and forms of knowledge production that sustain the detention regime.Drawing upon fieldwork involving time spent with detention workers while wearing a uniform, the author offers a rare, immersive perspective, providing insights from detention departments, offices, meetings, training sessions, isolation cells, and control rooms. By situating these practices in relation to the European and international deportation industry, the book analyses how detention is not only executed but also increasingly optimized and made the subject of social scientific understanding. This book takes seriously increasing sociopolitical challenges to the legitimacy of South Africa's post-apartheid legal order and scorching critiques of the constitutional settlement, against which many in the legal establishment bristle. Sindiso Mnisi develops 'Alter-Native Constitutionalism,' which is distinguished by equitable amalgamation of customary and common law with vernacular (or 'living') law, as a more compelling and just model for South Africa to adopt in its future than the legal pluralism that largely represents the afterlives of colonialism.
