Historische Geschlechterforschung

Refutes contemporary stereotypes about Mexico by sharing first-hand experiences from men who support the feminist movement in their country. The Mexican Feminist Movement responds to the Trumpian generalization that branded Mexican men as rapists, drug dealers, killers, and "bad hombres." Contrary to what Trump has expressed, many Mexican men are deeply concerned about the number of femicides in their country, and they express that concern in varied ways--they debate the issue with family and friends, participate in rallies in support of women's rights, and some have seen their own daughters, sisters, and partners suffer violence and daily harassment. This book offers Mexican men a space to share their lived experiences and everyday praxis in support of ending the violence that Mexican women face in society; it highlights these men's challenges to misogyny, their stand in solidarity with women, and their work toward building more just and equitable relationships at home, at work, and in the public sphere.

The Gloria Wekker Reader compiles articles, essays, interviews, poems, and letters by the Afro-Surinamese Dutch theorist and activist, Gloria Wekker. Wekker is a preeminent scholar in feminist Black diaspora studies, especially known for her developments in epistemology and methodology, conceptualizations of sexuality, and mapping of the connections between race, gender, and empire. These writings demonstrate Wekker's theoretical and political prowess, illuminating how her scholarship was foundational in shifting the fields of anthropology, feminist and queer studies, and Black diasporic studies. Featuring a foreword by Angela Y. Davis, engaging with The Gloria Wekker Reader is an invitation for interdisciplinary and intergenerational dialogue to inspire political action.

Foundations of Fashion Studies

By the 1940s the New York fashion industry had come into its own. Sportswear, which had evolved from its origins to include simple casual wear for travel, leisure, town and country, was at the centre of this shift. Drawing on an array of sources, this book examines how New York sportswear evolved during the 1930s and 1940s to become the definitive American style. It reveals how designers such as Claire McCardell, Clare Potter and Tina Leser created a fashion identity for New York that was as dynamic and modern as the city itself. Author Rebecca Arnold interrogates the American ideal of athletic, long-limbed women and looks for the first time at how sportswear impacted and was impacted by ideas of patriotism and democracy, as well as its links to notions of cleanliness and hygiene, and to 1930s theories of body image and contemporary dance. As part of the Foundations of Fashion Studies series, this classic text now includes a new foreword by Emma McClendon and a new afterword and further reading list by the author.

In We Live with the Sea, Andrew Littlejohn addresses the implementation and controversy surrounding safety infrastructures following the March 2011 tsunami in northeastern Japan. While the Japanese government proposed and enforced infrastructural transformations in the wake of the tsunami, these changes did not consider the impact on residents who built their communities and livelihoods around the coast. Focusing on the tsunami survivors who resisted government plans for increased coastal defenses, Littlejohn highlights alternative proposals offered by the local residents as well as the environmental, ecological, and more-than-human dependencies and imbrications those proposals reveal. In doing so, he argues that imposed modernist safety structures undermine the very things they claim to protect, showing how attempts to "ecologize" safety may offer more sustainable ways of thinking about security, preservation, and infrastructure.

This book offers a powerful rethinking of long-term unemployment, focusing on everyday lived experiences that reveal how unemployed men make sense of deindustrialisation and prolonged joblessness. The book foregrounds Bakhtin's theory of resisting power through humour and dialogue, challenging prevailing psychological and individualistic narratives. It instead shows how men resist dominant activation discourses by voicing metaphors that reflect their embodied experiences. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a post-industrial inner city Work Club, the book combines photographs, quotations and vignettes to illuminate the loss of largely masculine employment. It offers a critical analysis of agency and discourse, with new perspectives on how unemployed men resist and cope with their circumstances in ways that are often overlooked by mainstream theories.

Resisting Unemployment Stigma

This book is dedicated to monks, priests and priest-monks ("hieromonachoi") as copyists, readers, and owners of manuscripts in the Christian East. Did they only read and write, or did they also repair manuscripts? What texts did they copy? And what purpose did their books serve? By addressing these and related questions, alternating between overviews and case studies, the essays in this volume aim to shed new light on the cultural role of monks and clergy active in the Christian East-particularly in the Sinai and the Holy Land, with an additional focus on Antioch-between the 9th and the 16th centuries. Special attention is given to books written in Greek, Arabic, Syriac, and Georgian.

Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This publication is based upon work from COST Action CA20105 on Slow Memory, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.
