Snows Romanwerk, dessen Handlung sich vom Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs bis in die Zeit der Studentenunruhen von 1968 erstreckt, zeichnet - in der Rückschau des pensionierten Hochschullehrers Lewis Eliot und dabei autobiografisch getönt - den Lebensweg eines britischen Akademikers aus der Mittelschicht durch die sogenannten "corridors of power" nach: von Eliots Jugend in eher bescheidenen Verhältnissen in einer englischen Provinzstadt über seine Karriere als Anwalt in London, als Beamter, als Dozent in Cambridge. Dabei bieten die Romane eine tiefgründige Untersuchung der britischen Arbeitswelt des 20. Jahrhunderts und deren Institutionen sowie des komplexen Zusammenspiels zwischen dem Privatleben und dem Streben nach Ansehen in Beruf und Öffentlichkeit - entlang all der vielen Fallstricke moralischer Entscheidungen und vor dem Hintergrund sozialer Spannungsgeflechte und weltpolitischer Veränderungen. Dabei erzählt Snow clever und nicht selten amüsant. Seine liebevoll ausgearbeiteten Charaktere binden die einzelnen Romane, die auch separat gut lesbar sind, in geradezu Proust'scher Manier aneinander.
Im dritten Teil der Romanreihe, der im Original 1958 erschien, gibt der Erzähler Einblicke in die Welt einer großen britischen Bankiersdynastie zwischen 1927 und 1936. Durch seine Freundschaft zu Charles March, dem Sohn und Erben des jüdischen Bankhauses March, mit dessen Familie verbunden, stehen Lewis Eliot die Auswirkungen der sozialen und politischen Veränderungen auf die reiche und traditionsbewusste Familie direkt vor Augen. Vor dem Hintergrund des Aufstiegs von Kommunismus und Faschismus sowie der Vorbereitung Großbritanniens auf einen neuen Krieg stehen allerhand private Krisen: Charles bricht seine vielversprechende juristische Karriere zugunsten der ihm nützlicher erscheinenden Medizin ab, seine Schwester Catherine verliebt sich in einen Nichtjuden, sein Onkel wird in zwielichtige politische Geschäfte verwickelt, und die Familie fällt langsam auseinander ...
