Editorial Convergence and Working Conditions in German News Journalism

Digitalization and economic pressure pose fundamental challenges for journalism. Against this backdrop, Michael Sengl's dissertation provides the first comprehensive insight into German journalists' working conditions. Based on interviews with 19 editorial managers and a survey of 232 journalists, the author connects editorial convergence and working conditions. He reveals the impact of changing structures, roles, and workflow on editorial performance: The author argues that carefully considering journalists' working conditions is a key factor for quality and success in journalism.
