When a team of Victorian archaeologists dug into a grassy hill in Iraq, they chanced upon one of the oldest and greatest stores of knowledge ever seen: the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal, seventh century BCE ruler of a huge swathe of the ancient Middle East known as Mesopotamia. After his death, vengeful rivals burned Ashurbanipal's library to the ground - yet the texts, carved on clay tablets, were baked and preserved by the heat. Buried for millennia, the tablets were written in cuneiform: the first written language in the world. More than half of human history is written in cuneiform, but only a few hundred people on earth can read it. In this captivating new book, Assyriologist Selena Wisnom takes us on an immersive tour of this extraordinary library, bringing ancient Mesopotamia and its people to life. From a necessary act of survival to some of the most disturbing crimes in history to its often sensationalized and misunderstood role in certain cultures, cannibalism remains a fascinating yet taboo topic. Cannibalism around the World features more than 100 reference entries that examine cannibalism from a myriad of perspectives. Readers will discover the important cultural, spiritual, and symbolic roles cannibalism has played around the globe, from the Catholic Eucharist to sacrificial cannibalism among the Aztecs to appease the gods to the practice of some Fijian peoples of consuming enemies killed in battle to absorb their strength. The encyclopedia examines well-known incidents of survival cannibalism, such as the ill-fated Donner Party and the starvation conditions of labor camps during World War II. Entries on high-profile criminal cannibals such as Jeffrey Dahmer are also included. The book also explores cannibalism in written and oral stories, such as the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel and the Native American myth of the Wendigo. Cannibalism's portrayal in pop culture is also discussed. Taken together, these entries offer readers a broad yet highly nuanced view of this controversial subject grounded in rigorous anthropological scholarship.

Cannibalism around the World

How a lifelong engagement with experimental art informed the brilliant Czech-Brazilian philosopher Vilém Flusser’s early vision of a world dominated by glowing screens. Predicting the importance of technology and images in the twenty-first century as early as the 1970s, Vilém Flusser warned, “the basic structure of our thinking is about to experience a mutation.” The bewitching images and screens that surround us could lead toward a centrally programmed, totalitarian society—or another, better one characterized by dialogue and collaboration among humans and new forms of intelligence. In this book on the idiosyncratic and prescient Czech-Brazilian philosopher, art historian and critic Martha Schwendener explores the profound effect of art on Flusser’s thought. The Society of the Screen reveals how Flusser’s lifelong engagement with experimental practices—from abstract painting and concrete poetry in Brazil to video, cybernetics, and photography in Europe and the United States—as well as his extensive involvement with the São Paulo Biennial informed his belief that we were moving from “history”—a civilization informed by linear writing—into “post-history,” dominated by technical images. The book delves deeply into how Flusser’s ideas evolved, particularly in correspondence and collaboration with artists like Mira Schendel, Fred Forest, Wen-Ying Tsai, Harun Farocki, Louis Bec, and Karl Gerstner.
