Analytische Theologie und die Theologie von einfachen Gläubigen gelten häufig als unvereinbar: Eine formale Logik sei für Laien schwer verständlich, während eine narrative Logik analytische Rationalitätsstandards unterlaufe. Der vorliegende Band hinterfragt diese Vorurteile, indem er Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den Ansätzen der analytischen Theologie und den Deutungen von Gläubigen ohne formale theologische Bildung untersucht. Die Analyse stützt sich einerseits auf eine Diskursanalyse relevanter soteriologischer Veröffentlichungen, andererseits auf Gruppendiskussionen von einfachen Gläubigen zur Bedeutung des Kreuzestodes Jesu. Die Ergebnisse der Studie eröffnen neue Perspektiven auf das Verhältnis zwischen systematischer und praktischer Theologie.

Im fünften vorchristlichen Jahrhundert begann im Kreis der griechischen Insel- und Küstenwelt das philosophische Nachdenken über die Politik. Das darauf folgende Jahrhundert erlebte die Uraufführung des Stückes 'Aristoteles gegen Platon', die Suche nach Gerechtigkeit im Empirisch-Vorfindlichen gegen ihre theoretische Konstruktion. Neben den beiden großen Antipoden stellt diese Einführung den ganzen Reichtum politischer Philosophie in der Antike vor: von Thukydides und Xenophon über die Kyniker und die Stoa bis hin zu Polybios und Cicero. Walter Reese Schäfers Überblicksdarstellung ist direkt aus den Quellen gearbeitet. Gleichwohl zeichnet der Autor kein Bild vergangener politischer Philosophie, wie sie für sich gewesen sein mag, sondern eines aus dem Geist gegenwärtigen Demokratiedenkens.

This volume originates from the fourth Public Law Conference, held in Dublin in 2022. Leading scholars and judges from across the common law world presented papers on the making (and re-making) of public law across country studies, historical studies and studies of contemporary and future issues. This book articulates and defends a sceptical general account of parliamentary sovereignty.

It challenges the orthodox approach to this fundamental doctrine by making three key heretical claims. First, there are some laws that Parliament cannot make. Second, there are several ways in which primary legislation can be overridden or set aside by institutions other than Parliament. And third, Parliament has the power to bind itself as to the substance of future legislation. All three positions are developed using arguments which depend on existing legal materials and are compatible with the normative underpinnings of the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty. 

The book combines theoretical and doctrinal analysis. The theoretical part of the book situates Parliament's authority to legislate in the broader context of an examination of constitutional and political authority. It develops a conception of the ways in which competing views on the scope of Parliament's legislative authority are mediated into law. The doctrinal part of the book reconsiders Parliament's legal position. It proposes a novel conception of Parliament's power to bind itself, rooted in the idea of commitments. It defends the existence of a judicial power to impose narrowly conceived freestanding limits on Parliament's law-making authority, rooted in the rule of law. Finally, the book examines the challenges posed to parliamentary sovereignty by both its internal procedures and the devolved legislatures.
