*A New York Times Notable Book * A Financial Times Best Book of the Year 'A learned, formidable and vivid story... Readers around the world will study and ponder this monumental work of history, agreeing and arguing with it, all the while affirming its generational importance, for decades to come' The New York Times 'Epic... Read this book and you will learn innumerable things you did not previously know culled from places you have never been' Financial Times A brilliant global narrative that unravels the defining story of the past thousand years No other phenomenon has shaped human history as decisively as capitalism. It structures how we live and work, how we think about ourselves and others, how we organise our politics. Sven Beckert situates the story of capitalism within the largest conceivable geographical and historical framework in this fascinating new book.Capitalism, argues Beckert, was born global. Emerging from merchant communities across Asia, Africa and Europe, capitalism's radical recasting of economic life rooted itself only gradually. Then it burst onto the world scene, as European states and merchants built a powerful alliance that would propel them across the oceans. This epic drama corresponded at no point to an idealised dream of free markets. All along, state-backed institutions and imperial expansions shaped its dynamics.Capitalism decentres the European perspective, highlighting agency, resistance, innovation and ruthless coercion around the world through to the present with the rise of Asian economies, particularly China. Sven Beckert doesn't merely add up capitalism's debits and credits in this monumental book, but allows us to think afresh about the past to help us re-imagine the future.

Revealing the people behind the Rothschild name, The Rothschilds explores the lives and legacy of one of the best-known and most impactful families in modern history. The Rothschild name has long been synonymous with wealth and privilege, but as Jews the family has also been dogged by prejudice and hatred. Antisemitism followed them from their earliest beginnings in the oppressive Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt, where Jews were not allowed out after nightfall, to the lofty summits of high finance, art, and culture. However, behind the myths, the glamor, and the conspiracy theories are a group of relatives whose individualism, personalities and occasional eccentricities have been obscured by their shared surname.

In The Rothschilds, Harry Freedman delves into their lives on a historical tour, marked by an unfailing attention to the influence of individual family members on world events.

We travel from the genesis of the Rothschild international banking empire to the impact of individual Rothschilds in multiple fields over the past 250 years.

Spanning war, politics and the industrial revolution, art, architecture and interior design, zoology, smuggling, and counter-terrorism and the ongoing struggle against entrenched anti-Jewish bigotry in different historical eras and places.

The Rothschilds reveals a truly new story of a very old family, making a great contribution both to history and our understanding of a dynasty that has shaped our world.

History of Biblical Exegesis

The Gospel of John ranks among the most influential texts of Western intellectual history. Its theological and cultural impact shaped art, literature and philosophy for centuries¿-¿yet its medieval reception has remained comparatively underexplored. This volume unites contributions from biblical studies, church history, Latin philology, medieval studies, philosophy and art history to close this research gap. After an introductory overview, the chapters analyse major forms of John's reception in Latin and Old High German biblical poetry, in paraphrases and legendary traditions, in mysticism and philosophy. Liturgical and dramatic contexts¿-¿including the figure of John in passion plays¿-¿are also examined. Art-historical contributions address book art, patronage and pilgrimage, revealing the wide-ranging veneration of the Evangelist. Furthermore, the volume contains the first edition of a previously largely unknown Latin commentary on John, providing new insight into medieval exegesis. In this way, the contributors offer an interdisciplinary approach to the medieval history of the Gospel's reception and its central role in Europe's cultural memory.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE CUNDILL HISTORY PRIZE 'An engrossing tale of cruel prejudice and resilience' - The Times 'A stunning account of a dark history . . . magnificent' - The Irish Times 'Fascinating' - The Spectator 'Important and timely' - The Telegraph 'Splendid . . . hard to rival' - Literary Review A sweeping, riveting history of the Venetian Ghetto, the world's first Jewish ghetto. In the early sixteenth century, amidst the ruins of war, and in an atmosphere of religious hatred, the world's first Jewish 'ghetto' was established in Venice. Constrained in cramped, often insanitary conditions, the Jews who were forced to live there were extorted, abused and subjected to countless humiliating restrictions. Before long, Venice's Ghetto became the prototype for ghettos throughout Europe, paving the way for a more vicious and enduring form of antisemitism. Yet the Ghetto's story is also a testament of hope. Despite all they faced through the centuries, its residents thrived, creating a flourishing literary, musical and religious community. They sustained Venice's economy - and, as more migrants arrived, the Ghetto became a microcosm of the Jewish world. Historian Alexander Lee traces this vivid story from the first Jewish arrivals in the early fourteenth century to the present day, reconstructing the Ghetto through the eyes of its inhabitants - from the domestic squabbles of a sixteenth-century rabbi to the agonising wait of a family bound for Auschwitz. Authoritative, detailed and incomparably intimate, The First Ghetto offers a fitting monument to the Ghetto's past - and powerful lessons for the future.

'A truly major work, both deeply moving and incredibly powerful. A masterpiece of research, structure and writing . . . unforgettable' - Sir Antony Beevor'An important and deeply researched book . . . it substantially adds to our understanding of how the Nazi system of genocide and plunder operated' - The Times 'Smith has brought [this story] alive with forensic detail and a truly gripping narrative' - Financial Times 'Sweeping . . . A vivid, granular portrait of the Jews of Vienna and their demise' - The Atlantic 'An important book by one of our best historians' - Simon Sebag Montefiore 'Painful, profound, prescient . . . a magisterial work' - Sonia Purnell In 1938, Vienna was the second largest Jewish city in Europe, home to nearly 200,000 Jewish people. By 1946, only a few thousand had survived. In this heart-wrenching story of loss, fear, courage and hope, acclaimed historian Douglas Smith chronicles the Nazi destruction of Jewish Vienna. Drawing on hundreds of long-forgotten voices, from Jews to Nazis to Gentile collaborators and bystanders, The City Without Jews centres on one remarkable person: Mignon Langnas. Watching as nearly every Jew she knew was expropriated, forced to migrate, or deported to the killing fields and death camps in the East, Mignon vividly recorded her world in diaries and letters, creating an indispensably detailed and poignant account of life under Nazi rule. What emerges from the wreckage of a city bent on Jewish eradication is a gripping and fundamentally human history like no other - one of betrayal, sacrifice, impossible choices and survivor guilt.

This volume contains central sources and studies drawn from the rich late medieval tradition of the Benedictine convent of Lüne near Lüneburg: The edition of the statute book (Hs. Lüne, 14) presents the liturgical ordines for the admission of candidates, i.e. investiture, profession according to the rules of the Bursfeld Reform and consecration of virgins, as well as provisions on monastic charges, the duties of the provost and the diet. The diary of Mechthild Wilde (Hs. Lüne, 24) reports on her election as prioress in 1504 and the first weeks of her term of office. The study 'Networks of the Provosts' analyzes the career paths of the Lüne provosts, in particular their efforts to be endowed with lucrative benefices in Rome, and confronts their letters with news from the Roman supplication registers.
