National parks are often associated with hiking, holidaying, and nature but they are rarely perceived as legal spaces. Yet national parks in England and Wales only exist through the legal processes contained within the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, a piece of legislation which is internationally unique in how it defines what a national park is. In celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, the book examines the legally unique nature of national parks in England and Wales, exploring why these spaces were created in a legally distinct way. The Legal Creation of National Parks in England and Wales

How apprenticeship shaped the English economy Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy. Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. The book examines the practice of judicial reasoning in Tort law, understood as a process of justification, consisting of both deductive and non-deductive elements, and therefore involving a significant element of choice or discretion. The book divides the elements of judicial reasoning into four conceptual categories: factual assessments, application of legislative and judge-made rules, reliance on reasonableness, and policy considerations. To discuss these elements in a comparative perspective the book uses the English and French judicial traditions of Tort law as case studies. This enables the author to present a range of methods of establishing facts, drawing inferences, using legal sources and relying on policy arguments. By closely examining selected Tort judgments from both jurisdictions, the book elucidates the phenomenon of law-making through adjudication in both a non-codified and a codified system of liability.
