Das Fachbuch verknüpft die Diskussion virtueller Währungen mit möglichen Auswirkungen von Bitcoin und Co. auf Zentralbankpolitik. Es richtet sich sowohl an Wissenschaftler, Experten und Praktiker als auch an interessierte Laien. Im ersten Teil bietet es einen Überblick über Geld, Geldtheorien und die Funktionsweise des konventionellen Geldsystems sowie seine aktuellen Probleme und Herausforderungen. Hier werden mögliche Reaktionen der Zentralbanken diskutiert und ob virtuelle Währungen eine ernstzunehmende Gefahr für das Geldschöpfungsmonopol sowie eine tatsächliche Konkurrenz im Geldsystem darstellen.
