Situated within the broadly understood subfield of environmental memory studies, this book explores Israeli forests as spaces of commemoration. It investigates their significance in the Jewish¿Israeli memory culture over the last century, as well as their role as a recurrent form of environmental memorial, understood as a commemoration that uses the organic as both the symbolic and the building substance. In doing so, it reveals the roles that the natural environment plays in memory practices: as a carrier of symbolic meanings, and also as an acting, more¿than¿human element of memorial spaces.Employing the perspective of environmental hermeneutics, the analysis is grounded in the realities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and reflects on the intricate intersection of ideological, political, sociöeconomic, personal, and institutional dimensions of local tree planting. Simultaneously, it draws from instances of arboreal commemorations found in other geographical and cultural contexts, situating the practice of memorial forests within the wider framework of environmental memory and its associated social practices. This book argues that, beyond the apparent fracture between humans and Nature that defines the Anthropocene crisis, there exists a shared cultural foundation in legal traditions, converging on the recognition of the intrinsic value of Nature and of the ecosystem interconnections between human and non-human life. The legal innovations explored here-particularly from Latin America- embody a holistic, integrated view coherent with the ecosystem approach. It is proposed that these ideas offer potential not only within their own legal systems but also as models for Western legal frameworks. Divided into five parts, the book maintains a balance between theoretical and empirical, combining foundational legal and philosophical discussions with practical case studies and applications. Part I establishes the theoretical foundation, setting the conceptual framework of the volume. In challenging Eurocentric histories and accounts of international law, this book introduces an alternative history of pre-independence India.Western scholars trace the genesis of international law to Europe. However, scholars from the Global South trace the history of international law to different civilisations of the world existing since ancient times. They argue that European narratives are not sufficient to explain the true history of international law and that the history of international law should shed itself of its Eurocentrism and adopt a multi-civilisational perspective, according to which local and national histories can contribute towards a truly global history and in so doing enhance the legitimacy of international law. Taking up this perspective, the author traces the history of key elements of international law - such as diplomacy, trade and war - in and to pre-independent India. As Grotius himself acknowledged, in taking his cue from the practices of Asian States whilst arguing for the freedom of the seas, the author thereby elicits the contribution made by India, among other Global South nations, to the evolution and development of international law.The History of International Law in India is an alternative account of the history of international law and will appeal to scholars and students in the areas of legal history, international law -especially Third World approaches to international law - and South Asian Studies.
