Langs I: Das Gold zwischen den Brüchen

Das Gold zwischen den Brüchen

Ibero-American Criminal Sciences

This book offers the first comprehensive English-language exploration of juvenicide, a concept that examines the killing of young people as a form of structural violence rather than ordinary homicide. While the term has circulated widely in Latin American scholarship, this volume brings together leading voices to consolidate its theoretical foundations and demonstrate its relevance across diverse contexts. The book is organized into four sections that collectively map the field of juvenicide studies. The first section establishes the conceptual framework and situates juvenicide within contemporary crises affecting youth. The second examines intersectional dimensions, including age, gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity, to show how these factors shape vulnerability to lethal violence. The third section analyzes institutional structures—state power, neoliberal policies, education systems, and criminal apparatus—that enable and normalize juvenicide. The final section turns to resistance, documenting collective struggles that challenge the disposability of young lives in countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, and Colombia.By framing juvenicide as a “total social fact,” the volume illuminates the political, structural, and symbolic forces that render certain youth populations expendable under neoliberal capitalism. Combining empirical research with conceptual innovation, this book provides critical insights for scholars of youth and violence, policymakers, and practitioners. It also serves as a valuable resource for courses on inequality, violence, and social justice in Latin America and beyond.

Palgrave Studies in Race, Ethnicity, Indigeneity and Criminal Justice

The edited collection gathers contributions from across the world and engages in constructive debate about fundamental issues regarding Indigenous peoples in connection with issues of crime and harm. It provides the most diverse and global coverage of this topic across five continents. Existing explorations of Indigenous peoples in relation to issues of crime and harm have proven valuable in challenging, decentring, and renewing criminology. Yet, this research area remains at the margins of criminology, and many fundamental questions—such as the meaning of ‘being Indigenous’—await deeper exploration. Key themes explored by the book include: the meaning of Indigeneity; Indigenous epistemologies, Indigenous cosmologies, and their implications for the study of crime; the meaning of ‘crime’ for Indigenous peoples; causes, consequences, and types of crimes and harms against Indigenous Peoples; Indigenous peoples and gender; Indigenous systems of justice; and Interactions between Indigenous Peoples and state criminal justice systems. This collection does not seek consensus but reflects diversity and depth. It offers an introduction to Indigenous criminology and fundamental concepts, as well as a series of case studies and more intricate theorisation.David R. Goyes
is a researcher at the University of Oslo, Norway, with a PhD in criminology. He has contributed extensively to the study of North-South global relations, environmental conflicts, and Indigenous issues. Goyes is editor-in-chief of the
International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy
and a member of several editorial boards.
Angie Cuchimba
is a researcher at the Universidad Antonio Nariño, Colombia. Cuchimba holds a law degree from the same university. She is an Indigenous leader in the Nasa Community and has represented her People worldwide in diverse meetings. Together with Goyes, Cuchimba has published articles about Indigenous rights and justice in some of the best journals in the world.

“In
Principles of Imperfect Organized Crime Prevention
, John Braithwaite offers the first global analysis of organized crime and its entanglements with state corruption, war crimes, and corporate crime, drawing on evidence from more than 50 countries. Through a distinctive empirical and normative lens, Braithwaite combines fine-grained analyses and illuminating insights with thought-provoking recommendations grounded in restorative justice, responsive regulation and a theory of assemblages. Essential reading for scholars of organized crime, this book is equally valuable for social scientists, policymakers, and practitioners seeking innovative strategies to loosen organized crime’s grip on societies and mitigate resulting harms.”
–Leticia Paoli
, Professor, Institute of Criminology, KU Leuven, Belgium
This open access book is a novel contribution to criminology, a radical conjuncture in the evolution of restorative justice and responsive regulatory theory. When Brazil’s President Lula returned to power, he backed an assemblage of movements that included environmentalists, Indigenous leaders who were river keepers, forest keepers, and regulators to reduce deforestation of the Amazon at the hands of assemblages of illegal loggers, wildlife smugglers, agro-business, and corrupt officials. This steeply slowed accelerating destruction of the Amazon ecosystem. Simple reforms like resourcing forest fire brigades and environmental crime prosecutors also helped. Braithwaite’s theoretical point is that disassembling harm-producing assemblages, and replacing them with harm-preventing assemblages, helps us see how big changes to the character of organized crime do occur to impact things that matter, like the Amazon.Organized crime does most harm when it criminalizes states or is taken over by presidents of states. Braithwaite diagnoses data from 6000 interviews and documentary sources from over 50 countries to discern the states where this is happening. Which are the societies where the power of organized crime to do this level of harm has been disassembled?John Braithwaite
is Emeritus Professor and Founder of the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) at the Australian National University.

Principles of Imperfect Organized Crime Prevention

Conflicts and Power Relations in Ecuador's Shrimp Sector

Tides of Extraction

The material assembled in this volume offers a deeper insight into Walter Eucken's attitudes, thought, and actions during the darkest years of Germany's history: the period of National Socialism. Although Eucken, like his associates, destroyed potentially incriminating documents after the failed assassination attempt by Count Stauffenberg on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, the surviving texts mark key stages in a process that ultimately led this determined opponent of the Nazi regime - an opponent from the very beginning - into active resistance against Hitler.

What rendered Eucken immune to National Socialism from the outset was his philosophically grounded abhorrence of the dissolution of the free individual into the collective, as is inherent in all totalitarian, especially
völkisch
(ethno-nationalist) ideologies. His systematic opposition to the Nazi regime began with refusal, open protest, and confrontation, particularly in response to the rapid
Gleichschaltung
(forced coordination) of the universities, Martin Heidegger's rectorship, and the dismantling of academic freedom by the Nazis. Following Germany's invasion of Poland and several ultimately unsuccessful attempts to exert positive influence on the centers of power in Berlin, his resistance culminated in a - necessarily cautious - participation in conspiratorial activities as an advisor and confidant to the plotters.

The texts in this volume include notes and sketches of ideas, completed manuscripts that remained unpublished during his lifetime, published essays, a transcript of the lecture "Kampf der Wissenschaften," the record of a public discussion with a Nazi district leader, an expert report commissioned by the Reich Ministry of Economics on possible "sources of war financing" at the end of 1939, the academically significant essay "Wettbewerb als Grundprinzip der Wirtschaftsverfassung" prepared within the Academy for German Law, the chapter Eucken authored for the "Primer of Economics" initiated by Carl Goerdeler, as well as the appendix he co-authored to the memorandum "Wirtschafts- und Sozialordnung" of the Bonhoeffer Circle. This memorandum was prepared on behalf of the Confessing Church with a view to a future world church conference planned for the time after the war and the hoped-for overthrow of Hitler. Retrospective additions include, among other things, Eucken's "Notizen über die Haltung der rechts- und staatswissenschaftlichen Fakultät in Freiburg während der Herrschaft des Nationalsozialismus," his funeral oration for his prematurely deceased colleague Adolf Lampe, and drafts for an obituary of Hans Großmann-Doerth, with whom, together with Franz Böhm, Eucken had launched the research program of the Freiburg School: the development of a legal order conceived as an economic constitution, whose fundamental principle would be competition.

These materials make it possible to trace how Eucken, precisely through his confrontation with the rapidly escalating regime of injustice - with the enforced
Gleichschaltung
, the increasing move toward a planned economy, the persecution of the Jews culminating in genocide, the other atrocities of the dictatorship, and the devastating Second World War - was able to sharpen his conception of a "humane and functional order," diametrically opposed to such a cataclysm. Eucken's theoretical design of a competitive order would later provide direction in the postwar years for the establishment of a social market economy in the young Federal Republic of Germany.

Bastian lebt in seiner eigenen Welt.

Was bleibt dem Menschen?
