This edited collection shows the tangible and positive impacts neuroscience is having in specific jurisdictions for individuals involved in the criminal justice system as witnesses, victims, defendants, and legal practitioners. Over the last 30 years, neuroscience has significantly informed legal, philosophical, and doctrinal discussions by deepening our understanding of the relationships between the brain, mind, and criminality. By embracing a practical and realist approach, this book explores the fundamental question of what and how neuroscience has been concretely contributing to criminal justice, with a specific focus on international systems. Notably, the volume brings together perspectives to discuss neuroscience's positive impact on the global criminal justice process. It provides an overview of different legal dimensions that have been thus far positively impacted by neuroscience, as well as some discussion on its future applications to improve the treatment of system-impacted people. To this aim, the book covers two key areas: (1) criminal trials; and (2) punishment, treatment, and reform. This work will appeal to academics, criminal lawyers, judges, policymakers, and reformers interested in how neuroscience contributes to meaningful changes in the criminal justice system. This volume provides a broad framework for understanding hot spots policing in the context of contributions by Professor David Weisburd, recipient of the Stockholm Prize in Criminology for his work in this area.The book aims to bring together a wide array of studies that are seldom integrated into a broad general argument about why hot spots policing "makes sense," why police agencies should be implementing this approach, and how police reform can be integrated into their efforts. In the 21st century, a series of rigorous evaluations of hot spots policing overturned the widespread assumption that the police could not prevent crime. Today, there is wide agreement that when the police focus on crimes clustered in individual locations, often called microgeographic units or hot spots, they can be effective in preventing and controlling crime. This collection examines the history of the development of the idea of crime hot spots and evidence of crime concentrations at place that underlie hot spots policing. It also presents key experimental studies that show that hot spots policing works and that it does not simply lead to displacement of crime. Finally, the volume addresses how police reform can be integrated into hot spots policing.Of interest to a wide range of criminologists and policing scholars, this volume brings together and synthesizes the evidence supporting a focus on hot spots to prevent crime.

This analysis of the Swedish criminal system makes sense of a markedly punitive turn in policy despite the country's relatively liberal approach. That Sweden, often considered the welfare state par excellence, should show a move towards punitiveness needs an explanation from the view of both criminology and criminal policy. The book explores how the politicization of criminal policy, the questioning of experts, the increasingly emotional orientation of politics, and the proactive policy all contribute to the development towards increased repression in criminal policy. The types of crime that are at the centre of the criminal policy debate - drugs, violence, and organized crime - also all contribute to these general trends, and are politically exploited and affected by a growing political populism. The author contends that the crime-reducing effects of the policy must be considered to be very limited, while the costs of the increased criminal and coercive legislation are becoming considerable, especially in the form of an increasing number of people in prison. This book is of interest to researchers and instructors focusing on the sociology of punishment as well as policymakers concerned with crime policy and prison development.
