Recent years have seen renewed interest in elites around the world, and their interconnection with power, privilege, social stratification, and social change. The contributors to this edited volume explore the many facets of the role of elites in the political economy of Latin America: their position within society, their impact upon the economy, and their influence within governing institutions.The book demonstrates that in Latin America, as in many other parts of the world, structural change and movements toward more just, inclusive, and sustainable societies seem impossible without the involvement of elites at some level. This raises important questions: Under what conditions do elites push for reform? How do elites react to societal and economic challenges and changes? To what extent can popular classes successfully pressure elites? Bringing together a selection of case studies covering different Latin American countries, the book focuses on three key themes to address these questions: first, it explores how elites react to economic and societal challenges with some chapters looking at moments of change, as well as measures taken by individual elites to alter the status quo. Second, it seeks to understand the interrelation between external and domestic factors that engender elite action including global markets, geopolitics, state institutions, social forces, and the internal structure of elite groups. This edited collection unravels the multiple ways in which digital intermediaries have transformed the domestic and care work sector - and what this development entails for the regulation of digital labour platforms. Domestic and care work is work like any other - but also work like no other. As a consequence, digital intermediaries in these sectors fulfil partly different functions than other digital labour platforms. Taking a comparative and interdisciplinary socio-legal approach, the book is organised into four parts. The first section describes the different business models used in various geographical areas and analyses the ways in which digital intermediaries reshape these markets. The second section examines how digital intermediaries adapt their structures and organisations to regulatory and institutional frameworks, while also exploiting regulatory gaps and grey zones. The third part of the book highlights the experiences of domestic workers who develop novel forms of platform cooperatives with the potential for better working conditions and a stronger voice. The fourth part of the books looks at the legal and regulatory challenges, discussing the challenge of classifying digital intermediation in care and domestic work not only in relation to employment/self-employment, but also in relation to the third party in the triangular relationship: the private household. The book analyses cases from South and Central Europe, Southeast Europe, the UK, South Africa and Latin America; its interdisciplinary approach, with sociological, anthropological and legal perspectives make the book an important reference in this emerging field of study.

Aimed at students, practitioners and security scholars, this open access book presents creative, multi-faceted and critical perspectives on the future of European gendarmerie-type forces, particularly in the era of hybrid security threats. It reviews international cooperation between gendarmerie organisations and raises the question of whether the traditionally styled gendarmerie organisations are up to the rapidly changing security climate, where non-state armed actors tend to be agile and innovative. Gendarmerie-type forces are military-style police organisations which have evolved over time and are generally responsible for police activities at the higher risk end of the spectrum when it comes to closing sudden as well as structural security gaps. Europe faces several security challenges beyond, at and within its borders, ranging from large-scale organised crime, terrorism and irregular migration. This book explores traditional security actors in Europe, in particular gendarmerie organisations in France, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain, as well as the (cooperation with) other gendarmerie and law enforcement organisations.
