Country Life Readers: First- Book; Volume 3

A Practical Introduction

Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship

*A New York Times Notable Book * A Financial Times Best Book of the Year 'A learned, formidable and vivid story... Readers around the world will study and ponder this monumental work of history, agreeing and arguing with it, all the while affirming its generational importance, for decades to come' The New York Times 'Epic... Read this book and you will learn innumerable things you did not previously know culled from places you have never been' Financial Times A brilliant global narrative that unravels the defining story of the past thousand years No other phenomenon has shaped human history as decisively as capitalism. It structures how we live and work, how we think about ourselves and others, how we organise our politics. Sven Beckert situates the story of capitalism within the largest conceivable geographical and historical framework in this fascinating new book.Capitalism, argues Beckert, was born global. Emerging from merchant communities across Asia, Africa and Europe, capitalism's radical recasting of economic life rooted itself only gradually. Then it burst onto the world scene, as European states and merchants built a powerful alliance that would propel them across the oceans. This epic drama corresponded at no point to an idealised dream of free markets. All along, state-backed institutions and imperial expansions shaped its dynamics.Capitalism decentres the European perspective, highlighting agency, resistance, innovation and ruthless coercion around the world through to the present with the rise of Asian economies, particularly China. Sven Beckert doesn't merely add up capitalism's debits and credits in this monumental book, but allows us to think afresh about the past to help us re-imagine the future.

Available open access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Voluntary sustainability systems and responsible sourcing promise to address adverse social and environmental outcomes within global value chains. But un-fair trade continues to disadvantage producers and workers in the Global South. Why have they failed? What should we learn from them? Drawing on 30 years of research and policy advice, this book examines the roots of sustainability systems in colonial trade and traces their proliferation under multinational retailers in the agrifood and garment sectors. It questions whether current sustainability systems truly benefit workers and small-scale producers, especially women. It argues there are structural tensions between short-term profit-driven business models and long-term sustainability goals. A searching assessment of the robustness of voluntary initiatives and the role of government regulation shows how we could make trade fairer for a more sustainable future.

Are milk and dairy products still fit for the 21st century? As concerns about animal welfare, climate change and human health reshape our food systems, milk has become one of the most contested staples on our tables. In M*lk, Orla Shortall investigates the dairy dilemma by exploring the hidden realities of how milk is produced today. Travelling between farms across Britain, Ireland, Europe and North America, she meets dairy farmers and their cows, examining the challenges facing contemporary dairy farming, the rise of veganism and plant-based alternatives, and emerging ideas about how humans and cattle might coexist differently. Combining sharp wit with compassionate reporting and rigorous research, Shortall invites readers to reconsider their own relationship with dairy, and to ask what a more sustainable and ethical future for milk might look like.

Agricultural Statistics

Agricultural Statistics is published each year to meet the diverse need for a reliable reference book on agricultural production. It covers an extensive list of issues related to agriculture including livestock, farm values, crop production, and foreign trade. The estimates for crops, livestock, and poultry made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are prepared mainly to give timely current state and national totals and averages. They are based on data obtained by sample surveys of farmers and of people who do business with farmers. The survey data are supplemented by information from the Census of Agriculture taken every five years. Being estimates, they are subject to revision as more data become available from commercial or government sources. Unless otherwise indicated, the totals for the United States shown in the various tables on area, production, numbers, price, value, supplies, and disposition are based on official estimates. They exclude states for which no official estimates are compiled. Professionals in farming, ranching, agricultural consulting, and animal science will find this most valuable.
