This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. The topics addressed include food security and sustainability of agriculture especially in the suburbs of big cities; poverty reduction in rural agricultural areas amidst prosperity in urban and coastal areas; regional networks and international trade of the food industry in East Asia; creation of innovative knowledge and human capital for clustering of the agro-food sector; regional development strategy; and international cooperation. This book is the first investigation of the relationship between EU digital sovereignty and sustainability strategies. No One Gets Out Unscarred makes a simple but rarely acknowledged case: America's prison system is failing not only the people it incarcerates, but also the staff who work inside it and the communities to which almost everyone returns. Rather than treating prisoners and correctional officers as opposing sides in a zero-sum struggle, the book shows how their lives are bound together by the same punitive culture, institutional incentives, and political decisions.
At the heart of the book is an extraordinary exchange between two men who spent decades on opposite sides of the bars. Robert Barton has been incarcerated since adolescence in high-security federal prisons. Jack Donson is a retired Bureau of Prisons official who began as a correctional officer and rose to become a case manager. Drawn from more than fifty hours of interviews, their interwoven accounts reveal how a system designed to punish and control ends up brutalizing prisoners while simultaneously eroding staff morale, health, and judgment, producing an adversarial environment that makes everyone less safe.
Moving beyond exposés and redemption narratives, No One Gets Out Unscarred examines the everyday mechanics of incarceration: routine lockdowns, restrictive housing, medical neglect, mental-health failures, broken grievance systems, decaying infrastructure, and the hollow promise of rehabilitation. Rejecting both abolitionist polemic and law-and-order defenses, the book asks a pragmatic question with urgent implications for public safety: if more than 95 percent of incarcerated people will eventually come home, what kind of prison system actually serves society? This book brings together scholars primarily from the Global South, rooted in critical legal traditions, who reflect on international law and its role in (re-)producing social hierarchies in times of crisis and catastrophe. How should legal scholars articulate critique in catastrophic times? Should critical voices tone it down, in favour of pragmatism, when faced with deteriorating social conditions, growing inequality, protracted violence, planetary collapse, authoritarianism, and xenophobia? Or are they more urgently needed than ever?
