This book is the first collection of scholarly works fully dedicated to exploring disability and impairment in early Chinese history.Early Chinese understandings of disability are effectively revealed through investigations of a wide range of aspects, such as terminological, legal, political, and etiological. The volume explores how early Chinese disability was socially negotiated as a means for creating enabled and at times empowered identities. It shows how oppression and empowerment, when viewed through the prism of such negotiations of identity, were not mutually exclusive. Through such examinations, the volume demonstrates how an approach sensitive to both the separability and the interconnectedness of disability and impairment enables a more nuanced understanding of Chinese disability history specifically, and Chinese notions of embodiment more generally.Bringing together international academics to examine a plethora of topics relating to disability and bodily impairment in early Chinese history, with an eye on their socio-political implications, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese History, History of Medicine, and Disability Studies.

Crown jewels, coronations and corgis, this is a warm and nostalgic biography of powerhouse monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, written by experienced biographer Michelle Morgan. Interspersed with these, are fascinating stories that have been lost or forgotten over the past century. From immersive accounts of her working life, such as trips around the country and abroad to the people she met, and the anecdotes they shared. The book includes striking photographs of the Queen at different stages of life. From shy princess to World War II mechanic, through to Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith, the Queen was a stoic stalwart to the end. Told with insight and warmth, this is the perfect tribute to our longest-reigning monarch.

***SHORTLISTED FOR THE FINANCIAL TIMES AND STANDARD CHARTERED BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2026***'The book to read right now [is 1873] . . . All of us are reading this' - Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, The TimesFrom the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Lords of Finance comes a brilliant account of the earliest truly global financial calamity. On Friday, 9 May 1873 the Vienna stock market collapsed. Four months later Wall Street was in trouble. Elsewhere, as panic selling spread across financial markets, some countries defaulted on their debts, while the Bank of England was forced to raise its rates to their highest level in a century. It was the first global crash in history. And it was to have calamitous consequences. In his powerful new book, the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Lords of Finance tells the epic story of that crash and explores its economic and human costs. He describes how the growth of the international bond market in the 1850s and 60s funded a frenzy of speculation in railways, construction and nation-building. He examines those who became swept up in the boom, from leading bankers like the Rothschild dynasty to national leaders both visionary and venal, to rogues and chancers like the shameless Jay Gould, to such sceptical onlookers as Mark Twain and Karl Marx. He then traces how, in the subsequent panic, investors were left with catastrophic losses, while governments on both sides of the Atlantic rushed misguidedly to reorder the world's financial system. As he shows, the blunders made as the crisis unfolded set the stage for twenty years of deflation, and a punitive legacy of aggrieved populism that infected every part of the globe. Amid the crash's many aftershocks, the US abandoned Reconstruction, European powers staged an economic takeover of the heavily indebted Ottoman Empire, and the principle of international free trade came under pressure. Meanwhile there was a revival of antisemitic movements in Europe that blamed 'Jewish finance' for the disaster.A brilliant evocation of a key turning point in world history, 1873 is also a masterly examination of the unforeseen political and social consequences of financial misjudgements.

Beavers reshaped a Scottish landscape and public perception, transforming conservation into urgent, meaningful action. From the moment that these waters were given back their beavers, I knew that I would never wish to return to the time when they were without them . . .' In November 2021, in a major moment in Scotland's history, a family of beavers was spared a death sentence and relocated to a Perthshire farm. Their arrival at Argaty, Tom Bowser's home, paved the way for a new era in human-beaver relations. In this deeply personal account, Tom tells of his attempts to save these incredible animals, of the support and opposition received and of the unimaginable gains that beavers ultimately brought to his home. He also explores the wider themes of rewilding and nature conservation in Scotland, meeting some of the leading lights of this exciting movement, highlighting the work they do, the challenges they face and showing why ecological restoration is so important for the future of our planet.

Entrepreneur Standard The Gap Was Never Empty: The Entrepreneurial Operating System That Built Civilisation - 1.8 Million Years Before Silicon Valley What if entrepreneurship didn't start with startups, stock markets, or the industrial age? What if the same four universal drivers of human achievement -Coordinator, Inventor, Leader, Manager - have been running in us for 1.8 million years? Deep in the missing 99.7% of human history - the vast stretch before writing, cities, or pyramids - lies a truth that rewrites everything we know about progress, leadership, and capability. The shelter at Olduvai Gorge (1.8 million years ago), the notched timbers of Kalambo Falls (476,000 years ago), the ocean crossing to Australia (65,000 years ago), the survival of the Andes plane crash survivors - all reveal the same timeless pattern: four roles, one cycle, one operating system, refined through ice ages, supervolcanoes, and glacial collapse. Paul Clargo, who coined Entrepreneurology in 1999, applies his boundary-crossing, evidence-first framework to the hidden chapters of our past - proving that the people we've called "primitive" were problem-solvers, innovators, leaders, and protectors, every bit as capable as us. With Emotions as the primary driver, they felt what we feel: fear, ambition, purpose, pride, the drive to build something worth keeping. They didn't lack our intelligence - they lacked our accumulated tools. Their operating system was already complete. You'll discover:

Why the 1.8-million-year-old stone shelter proves coordination, invention, leadership and management existed long before the official date Homo sapiens arrived

How the DAP Cycle - Discover → Achieve → Protect - sustained groups through the Toba super-volcano catastrophe

Why surface minerals (iron, copper, ochre) drove construction long before mining or metallurgy began

The PAIDBACK feedback loop - how meaning, motivation, and return kept effort going when survival itself was uncertain

Why knowledge protection - not just discovery - determines whether civilisations endure or lose technologies

Living proof: uncontacted peoples, Polynesian star navigation, and survival cases showing the system activates instantly when modern infrastructure falls away

This isn't just history. It's a mirror. The same engines that got our ancestors through the worst the planet could throw at them are running in you right now - in your projects, your team, your resilience, your desire to matter. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. Drawing on archaeology, genetics, geology, and modern survival accounts, this book dismantles the "staircase" myth of slow, linear progress and introduces the 'JIGSAW'. What we see as sudden civilisational leaps are actually the release of capability (Resources, Attitude, Knowledge, Skill) that was always there - suppressed by harsh conditions, not undeveloped minds. Whether you're leading a startup, building a team, studying human potential, or simply asking "What are we really capable of?", this book changes the question. Not "Where did we come from?" but "What will we build now that we know the system has always been us?" The gap was never empty. It was full of people like us. Like YOU!

Bridgerton: An Offer From A Gentleman (Bridgertons Book 3)

Wem gehört das All und was bedeutet das für uns?Was passiert, wenn Satellitennetze ausfallen?
