Ius Gentium: Comparative Perspectives on Law and Justice

The contemporary significance of the subject “Social Rights, Inequalities and Affirmative Action” is indisputable. In periods of social polarization, conflict and crisis, it is imperative that the obligation of our societies to protect and promote social rights is addressed and acknowledged. It is also necessary to recognize the way in which social rights are jeopardized by inequalities that impede the cultivation of robust social relationships and to document instances of the implementation of affirmative actions in this scenario. The aims of this work are as follows: firstly, to establish general topics (part I); secondly, to undertake more specific investigations within the primary topic (part II); and thirdly, to address the challenges posed by the technological transition currently taking place in society, which has significant consequences for social rights, (in)equality, and affirmative action (part III). The study is organized into three sections corresponding to these targets. For the purposes of this study, the analysis will commence, in the Part I of this book, at the genesis of the debates, as outlined in the chapter concerning the old and the new forms of racism. This contribution is followed by a chapter on the growing recognition of intersectional discrimination in European and global human rights frameworks and by another on structural discrimination and the function of the law against unjust enrichment. To further explore and expand upon the subjects addressed in the preceding chapters, the final chapter of Part I of this book delves into the topic of affirmative action in the United States. The second part of this work is dedicated primarily to specific forms of affirmative action, thereby deepening the discussion initiated in the first part of this book. The initial topic examines the way in which the pandemic has impacted specific social groups and led to the emergence of health disparities in the UK. The subsequent chapter is devoted to an examination of the alterations in the benefits of minimum income support in Brazil in recent years. The fourth chapter undertakes a detailed investigation of a specific affirmative action program for children and adolescents with the objective of reducing violence in urban areas. The final chapter conducts an analysis of ageing, public policies and inclusion in Brazil. The third and final section is dedicated to an examination of the challenges faced by our technological societies. The field of “Social Rights, Inequalities and Affirmative Action” is set to be impacted by the regulation of artificial intelligence, the increasing digitalization of activities, and the development of new tools designed to enhance the efficiency of the social state. The initial chapter of the concluding section deals with the regulation of artificial intelligence in Brazil and the impacts of neurotechnology. The second study examines conservative digitalization and structural inequalities in Latin American information societies, while the final study focuses on the emergence of the social digital state and the use of instruments that produce inequality and discrimination.

Imprinted traces literacy and Caribbean literary culture from the late nineteenth century to today. Imprinted is a history of literacy and the development of a literary culture in the Caribbean from the late 19th century to contemporary times. It explores the places and spaces of such a cultural journey, during and after the colonial period. Entwined within this critique is the story of the author's own reading history, from a child reader devouring the books (Black Power heroes and romance fiction) in her family home in Dominica to the concerns of a literary scholar of a digital age. A remarkable investigation full of personal reflection and awareness of the social, political and economic dynamics that shape Caribbean reading experiences.

It is seldom, if ever, that readers and writers see the different stages of a piece of writing in progress. In this unique volume, 16 of the US's most distinguished writers pull back the curtain on their creative and revision processes whilst drafting their works of creative nonfiction. Using side-by-side examples of first drafts and final versions of their writing, including original full-page reproductions from the writers' personal notebooks, an original, illuminating essay accompanies each draft that recounts the journey from inspiration to completion. Offering a generous insight into the creative process from the rough bold strokes to refined, clear, elegant prose, this behind-the-scenes look delves into the creative minds of working writers, including African American, Latino, Asian American, and indigenous writers from across the US. An invaluable resource for students and instructors looking to enliven the classroom or just offering practicing writers a peak into the processes of their peers, this book presents the false starts and missteps, the self-editing, tinkering, cutting, rearranging, and craft working writers make in the plight for perfectly polished prose. With nothing like it on the market, The Art of Revising Creative Nonfiction is an enlightening and unparalleled collection of modern-day creativity in action, a must have for aspiring writers and teachers of all levels.

Little Clothbound Classics

Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas, and essays from the world’s greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith. In these elegant and devastating tales of deception, desire, and social intrigue, Edith Wharton exposes the brittle veneer of civility that masks human ambition and longing. From the sunlit terraces of Rome to the drawing rooms of New York, Wharton’s characters navigate a world bound by class and convention yet charged with emotional undercurrents they barely understand. In “Roman Fever,” two middle-aged women confront the unspoken rivalries that have shadowed their friendship for decades; in “Mrs. Manstey’s View,” a lonely widow’s cherished glimpse of life beyond her window becomes the stage for a quiet tragedy; and in “After Holbein,” the elaborate pretenses of two aging New Yorkers reveal the haunting persistence of vanity and illusion. These Wharton works are the latest to join the Little Clothbound Classic series designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith.

This is a clear, compelling guide to improving racial literacy in schools and communities, demonstrating how making that investment can transform our education system. Exploring the ability to understand race, racism and anti-racism as an effective tool for recognising and challenging racism, educators and learners will find opportunities to develop their racial literacy through a range of practical activities. These form part of an ongoing journey of learning, using the impact of De Montfort University's Stephen Lawrence Research Centre. This specific, focused approach places the book's advice and ideas - from decolonising the curriculum and anti-racist educator training to student ambassadors and open dialogue - squarely within the historical context of race and education in the UK. By working through the nuance of racial consciousness and towards a fair and equitable society it stands as a productive counterpoint to the conventional wisdom of how to 'solve' racism. This is essential reading for anyone committed to achieving social justice and racial equity in our education system.

What if the biggest obstacle to solving our problems is nothing more than a failure to believe that we can?Rick Caruso has spent his life stepping optimistically into places where other people see no way forward by asking a deceptively simple question: What can we do to make this better? From his appointment as Commissioner to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and later the City's troubled Police Department, to the creation of his bold and innovative real estate ventures including L.A.'s world-renowned retail center The Grove, Caruso built a reputation for finding steadfast solutions even in the face of staunch adversity. By employing the great teachers of experience and curiosity, he continues to do what he can to improve Los Angeles, the city he loves, and in Breaking New Ground, he shares lessons learned along the way--while offering us all a path forward to a better future.Again and again, Caruso discovered that breakthroughs rarely come from knowing everything at the outset. They come from asking better questions, bringing the right people into the room, listening without ego, separating ideology from reality, and refusing to give up until workable solutions emerge. Ultimately, they require a steadfast dedication to the belief that there is always a solution and that defeat is not an option.Breaking New Ground is the story of how his philosophy was forged--from the examples of immigrant grandparents and a father who lost one fortune and built another, to Caruso's own successes, failures, public battles, family life, faith, and unexpected turns through business and government.Caruso is less interested in prescribing a formula for becoming successful than in exploring how successful problem-solvers think: how they distinguish what matters from what merely makes noise; how they balance conviction with compromise; how they recognize when conventional wisdom has stopped working; and how they remain fearless enough to see difficult decisions through.Part memoir, part argument, and part blueprint for action, Breaking New Ground offers a timely proposition for anyone confronting a problem that feels too complicated, entrenched, or divisive to solve. There is always another way forward. Sometimes you simply have to be willing to build it.
