A portrait and analysis of East German band Silly's popular music masterpiece, Februar, that mirrors the collapse of socialism. In early 1989, nine months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the band Silly released Februar, one of the most important albums in the history of rock music in the GDR. The record was both-an artistic masterpiece, and an eloquent sign of the times, with lyrics that commented on the political erosion afoot in East Europe and anticipated the collapse of socialism. That the words were able to overcome the hurdles typically set by censorship in the GDR owed in part to the extraordinary origins of the album. Februar was the only large-scale popular music coproduction between East and West Germany, jointly realized by Amiga in socialist East Germany and Ariola in the capitalist West. Ariola assumed the costs for the album, assuring itself the final say. Recorded in West Berlin, the album was released in both Germanies. Yet just as the song sequence and narrative of the record varied considerably from East to West, so too did its presentation and reception. Februar illustrated the divergent meanings rock music held in the rival societies, confirming its special power in the GDR. Differently from what black-white interpretations suggest, rock in East Germany developed along lines marked by unexpected possibilities, productive contradictions, and constant negotiations between artists and the state. This is the subject of this book. It portrays Februar as the culmination of a long-process of self-empowerment, throughout which Silly gained increasing artistic and political leeway.

Einen gewichtigen historischen Einblick liefert das 35-jährige Jubiläum von "Gothic" von Paradise Lost. Gitarrist Greg Mackintosh erinnert sich an die Anfangstage eines Albums, das einem ganzen Subgenre seinen Namen gab - und zunächst alles andere als selbstverständlich verstanden wurde. Ebenfalls tief in die Szene-Geschichte führt die große Darkthrone-Story mit Fenriz, die nicht nur Einblicke in das Schaffen der norwegischen Kultband liefert, sondern auch zahlreiche Album-Tipps bereithält und die Entwicklung des Black Metal aus erster Hand nachzeichnet.
Mit Blick auf die Gegenwart und Zukunft des Genres widmet sich Legacy #162 ausführlich Dimmu Borgir (im Anschluss an die Konferenzschaltung mit Nergal von Behemoth und Shagrath in der Ausgabe 161): Gitarrist Silenoz spricht über Weiterentwicklung, Selbstoptimierung und die Kunst, über Jahrzehnte relevant zu bleiben. Wer Symphonic Black Metal liebt, wird außerdem jubeln, denn es findet sich auch eine große Story zum Comeback der englisch-walisischen Heroen Hecate Enthroned. Und eines darf natürlich nicht vergessen werden: Die Urväter des Genres, genannt Venom, sind mit neuem Album am Start, und die gesamte Band stand dem Legacy Rede und Antwort!
Auch abseits dieser Schwerpunkte bietet die Ausgabe zahlreiche Highlights: Die überraschenden Soundcheck-Sieger Soulburn unterstreichen eindrucksvoll, wie lebendig düsterer Extrem-Metal weiterhin ist, Dead Kosmonaut äußern sich ausführlich über ihre Liebe zu Iron Maiden, und Panopticon erzählen von den intimen Momenten ihrer Kunst. Schlussendlich wurde natürlich auch das neue Werk von Neurosis detailliert unter die Lupe genommen. Weitere Interviews und Features reichen von Nunslaughter, A Forest Of Stars und den wiedererstarkten Fleshcrawl bis hin zu Evergrey, Unearthly Rites und den kultigen Bewitched.
Schlussendlich hat selbstverständlich auch die Festival-Saison 2026 begonnen, und das Legacy berichtet für euch von zwei der frühen Highlights: dem Ragnarök Festival und dem Braincrusher Festival!

Through rare access to the Violent Femmes and their archives, this book investigates the creation of such iconic songs as "Blister in the Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add it Up" and "Prove My Love", as well as the album's recording process. The self-titled debut from Milwaukee post-punk acoustic trio the Violent Femmes is one of those rare albums that seems to have altered the course of popular music and influenced just about everyone who heard it while also managing to operate almost entirely outside of the mainstream. Released in 1983 to little sales or attention, the band was so iconoclastic that it couldn't even engender support from Milwaukee's anti-establishment punk scene. Over the ensuing years, though, Violent Femmes managed to exert itself as an unstoppable cultural force, ascending the college radio charts and spreading through word-of-mouth. Violent Femmes didn't sound like anything else when it was made, and it still doesn't sound like anything else. The album somehow exists both outside of time and as one of the most evocative and enduring artifacts of the alternative '80's.
