Die 1:1-Projekte des ./studio3, dem Institut für experimentelle Architektur an der Universität Innsbruck, initiieren kollektive Prozesse und machen die Verantwortung architektonischen Handelns von der Idee bis zur Realisierung erfahrbar. Wenn Projekte aus dem Studium heraus gebaut werden, entsteht ein Lernen im Maßstab der Realität. Architektur wird öffentlich sichtbar, räumlich und ästhetisch wirksam und reagiert auf kulturelle, soziale und politische Bedingungen. 
25 Projekte in 25 Jahren bilden den Anlass für diese Publikation über die Design-Build-Forschung und Lehre des ./studio3. Die Arbeiten spiegeln die Vielfalt ihrer Orte, ihrer Nutzer:innen und der beteiligten Studierenden wider und zeigen den experimentellen Anspruch, aktiv in kulturelle Kontexte einzugreifen.

The architect, professor, and author Uwe Schröder has shaped the debate on fundamental themes of architecture-topology and typology, space and aesthetics-for more than three decades with his clear, uncompromising stance. These two beautifully crafted volumes present, for the first time, his award-winning oeuvre in its entirety: buildings and designs with numerous photographs and drawings, as well as the key texts Schröder has written over the years and his Raumentwurfslehre (theory of spatial design).  Manual for Designing Urban Imaginaries Colombia
 is grounded in experimentation and aims to confront one of humanity's most pressing challenges: the complexities of transformation in an urban age.
 Situated at the nexus of urban research, design, and activism, the present volume focuses on Colombia's rapidly urbanizing areas, where decades of armed conflict and forced displacement from neighboring Venezuela have given way to new waves of social and environmental issues. In such a challenging sociopolitical context, this manual-emerging from research by building at the ETH Zurich under the frame of the Colombia Urban Transformation Program-explores the spaces where architectural practice and design thinking meet the hopes, needs, and perceptions of communities. The concept of the "urban imaginary"-denoting the desires of the collective-is evoked as a means of developing strategies for marginalized voices, so as to shape the future of their built and natural environments.The manual demonstrates that true transformation is possible when alliances are forged, when diverse actors meet at a common table to negotiate, deliberate, and build solutions together. It also underscores that design and multiple forms of knowledge-scientific, cultural, and lived-must converge if we are to address the paradox of hyper-diversity and inequality that defines so many urban contexts.

Das Buch dokumentiert die außergewöhnliche Umgestaltung des "Palais des Expositions" im belgischen Charleroi, das von 1948 bis 1953 nach Entwürfen des Architekten Joseph André realisiert wurde. Der 60.000 m² große Messekomplex repräsentierte damals den Stolz der belgischen Industrie auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer wirtschaftlichen Blütezeit. Doch nur zwei Jahrzehnte später geriet die westeuropäische Stahl- und Kohleindustrie in eine Strukturkrise, von der sie sich nie mehr erholen sollte. Dadurch sank auch die Nachfrage an großen Messen Schritt für Schritt, bis sich der riesige Gebäudekomplex irgendwann nicht mehr wirtschaftlich betreiben ließ. 
2015 veranstaltete die Stadt Charleroi einen Architekturwettbewerb zur inhaltlichen und baulichen Neukonzeption des Gebäudes, den das Team von AgwA und architecten jan de vylder inge vinck gewann. Um die Nutzfläche des dreiteiligen Komplexes zu verkleinern, ohne ganze Gebäudeteile davon irreversibel abzureißen, verwandelten sie etwa ein Fünftel des gesamten Gebäudevolumens von einem Innen- zu einem Außenraum. Dafür entfernten sie lediglich die Fassaden des zentralen Erschließungsgebäudes, das die beiden dreistöckigen Ausstellungsgebäude verbindet, erhielten jedoch alle seine Geschossdecken, Treppen und das Dach. Auf diese Weise ist in der Mitte des Gebäudes ein großzügiges urbanes Foyer entstanden, durch das der öffentliche Raum der Stadt sich nun quer durch das ehemals ge- schlossene Gebäude zieht. Heute erhebt sich das Ensemble wie Phönix aus der Asche aus den Ruinen des post-industriellen Niedergangs - als visionärer Vorbote einer nachhal- tigen Zukunft, die der Klimakrise mit einer Ökonomie der Suffizienz begegnet. 
Das Buch porträtiert diese Transformation der Subtraktion durch eine Einführung der deutschen Architekturkritiker und Verlegerinnen Ilka Ruby und Andreas Ruby, eine Serie von exzellenten Aufnahmen des renommierten belgischen Fotografen Filip Dujardin, der den gesamten Bauprozess begleitete, sowie durch detaillierte Pläne und Zeichnun- gen der Architekten. Kommentare verschiedener Protagonisten des Projekts - neben den Architektinnen auch Ingenieure, Planer, Projektentwickler sowie städtische Beamte und Politiker - verdeutlichen die im Oxymoron des Buchtitels anklingende ungewöhnliche Entwurfsstrategie, die sich als "Annehmen und Hinwegfügen" übersetzen lässt. In Zukunft könnte diese Strategie zu einem wichtigen Instrument für den Umgang mit einem wachsenden Bestand an Gebäuden werden, für die wir keine wirkliche Verwendung mehr haben.

Attali introduces the project from her unique visual perspective, while conversations with Kuma and Djurovic reveal the close creative partnership between museum, architect, and landscape designer. Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian

"Meine Aufgabe als Architekt sehe ich darin, enge gesellschaftliche Grenzen zu verschieben, um lebenswerte Räume für die Entwicklung heutiger und zukünftiger Gesellschaften zu schaffen" so sagt es Andreas Schneider im Vorwort der vorliegenden Publikation. Im Gespräch mit dem Architekturhistoriker und emeritierten Professor für Architekturtheorie und Baugeschichte an der School of Architecture der Hochschule Bremen Eberhard Syring wird diese Haltung vertieft. Schneider beschreibt seine "Architekturphilosophie" als Zusammenspiel von Idee, Kontext und Material - im Städtebau verbunden mit der Aufgabe, lebenswerte Städte "im menschlichen Maßstab" zu schaffen.
Die Monographie dokumentiert ausgewählte Bauten und Projekte aus den Jahren 1995 bis 2025 - von realisierten Gebäuden über Wettbewerbe bis zu städtebaulichen Konzepten. Zahlreiche Fotografien, Zeichnungen und Texte zeigen die Bandbreite des architektonischen Denkens des Büros und beleuchten den so nachhaltigen wie künstlerischen Umgang mit Material, Farbe und Kontext.

andreas schneider architekten - bauten + projekte - 1995-2025

Between 1985 and 2002, the British architects Alison and Peter Smithson transformed the Hexenhaus from a modest vernacular cottage to one of the most remarkable houses of the late twentieth century. The architects completely redefined the relationship between the house and its surrounding landscape by means of more than twenty small additions, extractions, satellite buildings, furnishing operations and alternative routes. During this long process, they established a close relationship with their client, the owner of the furniture company Tecta Axel Bruchhäuser, who still lives there to this day. Axel is a key figure when it comes to comprehending the house's design. As Peter Smithson wrote: "To work with such a person is to receive notions, strongly felt and expressed, which are the beginning of a spatial transformation. Each gives what the other needs."

Noted architect Thomas Kligerman celebrates the magic of summer, exploring the seaside setting and design of secluded cottages facing the Atlantic along the Rhode Island coastSummer by the Sea is the first book to focus on the seaside cottages of Rhode Island, the birthplace of the shingle style, lauded as the 'architecture of the American summer'. This in-depth tour of seaside communities begins with Watch Hill and moves along the coast, weaving together the history of the state, the evolution of the shingle style, and descriptions of the geology and wildlife that create a unique sense of place.Each chapter explores a different town - Watch Hill, Weekapaug, Haversham, Block Island, Saunderstown, Jamestown, Middletown, Little Compton - capturing landscape and seascape and studying both historic and contemporary shingle style designs.Featured are works by 19th century masters Calvert Vaux and Charles L. Bevins, new houses by Jens Risom, Gil Schafer, and Peter Bohlin, and vernacular cottages by unknown builders that have descended through generations of the same family. The most recent is Tom Kligerman's own house in Weekapaug, a gabled, shingled form that he describes as 'an architectural madeleine for my family,' evoking the sounds and scents of his own boyhood summers by the sea.Lush photographs specially taken for the book by Read McKendree capture the spirit of the place - interiors filled with personal histories, generous, inviting porches, and views out over meadows and ponds to the Atlantic beyond.
