This edited collection illuminates what the concept of a specifically epistemic type of injustice has to offer socio-legal analysts. The epistemic aspects of injustice comprise more than knowledges, meaning and understanding, to include the supporting material and discursive (infra)structures for their production and dissemination arising in space/place/time. This book focuses on legal and regulatory arrangements, and the forms of knowledge and meaning they carry and with which they interact, in order to bring to light their spatial and place-relatedness or boundedness, which includes their temporal dimensions at various scales.
These highly innovative studies of epistemic injustice encompass the responsibilisation of patients in the North of England and Northern Ireland, housing, the systemic operations of law, the construction of digital spaces by algorithms, hospital discharges, case law affecting Indigenous communities in Kenya, the experience of mining disaster in Brazil, and the perspectives of rare diseases patients in Austria during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The book contributes towards law and geography, in particular through the emphasis on temporality as part of space and place. By highlighting the importance of author positionality and reflexivity, and pausing so as to bolster the development of humility and sensitivity for more fully informed studies on epistemic injustice and its ameliorations, the book also advances methodology for future studies.

Socio-Legal Studies on Epistemic Injustice and Spaces and Places

European Union and its Neighbours in a Globalized World

The present volume provides a bioethical and legal-philosophical inquiry into three of the most ethically controversial and politically sensitive domains of contemporary biolaw: surrogacy, end-of-life decisions, and medical triage. The book’s approach transcends mere description or comparison, delving into the ethical and philosophical dimensions required to adopt a normative framework for evaluating the management of human life at its biological thresholds: birth and death. Within the central chapters, the text follows a consistent thread: through a legal-philosophical perspective, it examines whether the choices of giving life through surrogacy, ending life, and allocating medical resources in contexts of scarcity can be considered ethically admissible while investigating whether normative structures exist that are capable of guiding human action and upholding autonomy, equality, justice, and human dignity. Written in clear and accessible language, this book provides conceptual clarity and critical reflection for scholars and practitioners in bioethics, biolaw, philosophy of law, and health policy.&nbsp;

This book defends the idea of autonomy as the balancing of normative arguments, which captures the essential feature of autonomous judgement as being simultaneously free and normatively bound. However, this approach runs counter to the dominant view of arguments as propositions, and to Kantian notions of autonomy. Here, it is applied to three core dimensions of law: law as legal system, as legal practice, and as normative judgement, leading to specific views of legal validity, legal interpretation, and the necessary content of law in the form of human rights principles. Lastly, the autonomous reasoning perspective is applied to conflicts of law with morality and with competing legal systems.

What does it mean for East to meet West in legal and political philosophy? This question is explored against the backdrop of a world where East and Southeast Asian societies challenge the boundaries of traditional liberal democracy. Daniel Bell promotes symbolic monarchy, which supposedly fosters social unity, stability, and ethical leadership without authoritarianism, proposing it as a model for China. Hirohide Takikawa discusses legitimacy in democratic and authoritarian regimes, arguing that non-democratic systems can have authority if they secure equal freedom. Beyond the two focal contributions, the volume brings together a range of perspectives on pressing themes including frontiers of legal theory, the role and reality of judges, the interface between law and science, cosmopolitanism and culture, and sexuality.By engaging both historical legacies and contemporary challenges, the essays collectively shed new light on how legal and political ideals are shaped, contested, and reimagined across cultures. Probing Human Dignity from multiple disciplinary backgrounds by scholars from a variety of countries and different cultures is an intense intellectual and emotional venture. The intensity emerges from an encounter with Human dignity that challenges individuals, communities, and society at large to navigate different spheres of human action, including ethical, moral, religious, and legal realms. Difficulties arise in the attempt to bridge the conversation about Human Dignity across cultures and traditions. This volume addresses such difficulties, exploring new horizons of the discourse and offering a mosaic of the quest for Human Dignity. Alas, the denial of a person’s dignity continues to manifest in contemporary life, through injustices often related to personal hardship, crisis, unrest, or upheaval. This collection confronts such injustices with sensitive, complex, nuanced, and academically rigorous engagement.&nbsp; 
 Each chapter begins from the understanding that recognizing and investigating Human Dignity often occurs “at the threshold”, where in times of societal crisis or individual hardship questions of Human Dignity turn into ethical, moral, and legal dilemmas.&nbsp;The objective of this volume is to draw on theoretical and conceptual distinctions of Human Dignity in order to inform new perspectives that probe its ambiguity. The contributors offer greater clarity and push beyond existing thresholds to develop new paradigms that cross disciplinary lines while speaking to the goals and needs of post-modern societies and individuals. Each contributor crosses into new territory to examine a pressing legal or societal issue with a new lens. 
 The authors worked together as an international and interdisciplinary research group within the framework of the 2nd Intercontinental Academia of the UBIAS network (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Studies). This volume reflects their journey, their fruitful collaboration, and their scholarly endeavors.
