This contributed volume takes a country-driven assessment of efforts to implement the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). AfCFTA is, arguably, the most prominent attempt to galvanize the continent into political and economic integration in its history. &nbsp;The AfCFTA promises to be the largest free trade area in the world based on the number of participating countries, and forecasts of its impact demonstrate that AfCFTA is potentially the most powerful instrument to significantly alter the socio-politico and economic status of Africa as a whole and place the continent on the power map of the world.&nbsp;In spite of this laudable and promising opportunity for African growth, the implementation of the AfCFTA has been slow as of this book’s writing. It is important to undertake a comprehensive review of the implementation of the AfCFTA, in order to appraise the prevailing teething problems experienced across selected countries. Although the AfCFTA remains a continental initiative, the speed, political will, and achievements of the implementation process is largely country-driven.&nbsp;The country-specific review of the implementation processes of the AfCFTA presented in this book highlights context-specific dynamics, identifying best practices, understanding implementation challenges, tailoring support mechanisms, and facilitating peer learning amongst implementing countries. The book assembles international trade research experts principally from research chairs from across the continent to analyses country-specific experiences, challenges, and successes of the implementation of the AfCFTA. &nbsp;The book is written by seasoned African researchers/academics, primarily from foremost universities of the respective countries under consideration, for the benefit of Africa.

First published in 1983, French Planning in Theory and Practice (now with a new preface by the authors) provides the first detailed account since the late 1960's of the French system of economic planning, and its relevance for other market economies. It offers an original and non-technical rationale for planning in a market system and examines the decline in French planning, at a time when the new government was attempting to extend the traditional planning system.The initial theoretical part of the book is primarily addressed to economists. It reviews the literature on indicative planning and argues that it is severely deficient, above all in failing to take account of the implications of uncertainty on private decision-making. These problems have empirical relevance for the French experience, and lead to the proposal for a different form of planning, supplying co-ordination that would not be spontaneously forthcoming in the public or private sectors. The analysis goes beyond the scope of French planning and has policy relevance for all market economies.Although written with the main analytic issues in mind, the remainder of the book stands independently as a comprehensive study of planning in France. It traces the gradual loosening of the links between policy making and planning in France and tries to draw the lessons from this experience for the practice of planning. The authors conclude that the type of planning that had seemed so successful in the 1960's was simply no longer possible in the economic and political climate of the 1970's, yet no real attempt was made to define an alternative role for the plan. The political and administrative authorities were happy to see planning fade. The arrival of the Socialist government offered great scope for the revival of the process, but the authors caution against supposing that political will was the only vital ingredient. The book is based on extensive interviews with planners, analysts, and decision-makers as well as on published and unpublished written and statistical sources.

French Planning in Theory and Practice

Originally published in 1985, this book was a study of one example of an all-purpose, unitary, borough council in the UK. It covers the years since the democratization of the borough councils in 1835, through the attainment of county borough status in 1888, the major expansion in local government services in the first six decades of the 20th Century, and the decline, after reorganization, of both the boroughs in particular and local government in general. The book assesses the impact of the Borough Council on the town of Reading and its inhabitants, dealing with the politics of territorial expansion, the attempts to make a coherent education and the process by which local politics became dominated by political partisanship. The book's examination, largely based on original sources, of government and politics in one English town, is of broader relevance to fields such as political history and the development of the party system. It will be of interest to local and urban historians and students of politics and public administration.

However, this alone was an insufficient description of labour market trends, as there were substantial differences in employment performance among countries and regions. The new macroeconomics is about distributions and flows, rather than points and intersections. Market frictions imply that the search for trading partners is time consuming and costly. Consequently, market participants flow between economic states, and trades occur at dispersed prices. This generates motives for continued search for better market opportunities, and for bargaining between potential trading partners. This volume takes the empirical analysis of markets with frictions to a new level by using unique merged registers from Denmark on firm accounting data, individual employee data, and international trade data to estimate empirically the relevant flow rates, dispersions, and relations among key variables of interest, including productivity, firm size, wages, exports, growth, and unemployment. The results serve to inform researchers and policy makers about the functioning of markets, justify the interpretation of dispersion and flows as equilibrium outcomes, and provide an understanding of cycles, adjustment, and potentials for public policy.
