Histories of Electronic Musical Instruments

The Roland x0x Series: A History of Early Roland Synthesizers and Drum Machines from SH-101 to TR-909 offers an authoritative but accessible investigation of how the design of these most influential musical instruments is shaped by technological factors, institutional contexts, market forces and imagined users and uses. Drawing on the perspectives of designers and engineers along with musicians and producers from around the world, the book explores how these iconic instruments both enable and constrain the creative work made with them.Providing detailed analysis of these seminal instruments, this book combines archival research that draws on contemporary reviews, instruction and service documentation, advertising and marketing materials, and technical analysis of the underlying analogue and digital circuits, with discussion of creative composition and performance practice, hardware and software modifications and modern remakes, emulations and clones. The Roland x0x Series is dedicated to demystifying these mainstays of popular music, and revealing the 'hidden histories' of the creation, lives and afterlives of these most important, recognisable, yet often misunderstood, synthesizers and drum machines. This is an essential reference for music producers and music technology enthusiasts, as well as those studying music technology, instrument design and human interaction in the context of electronic music.

The Ground Above

'Expertly crafted' AMELIA DIMOLDENBERG'A beautiful siren song to anyone who has ever felt ashamed of their own taste' SCARLETT CURTIS'An ode to both fearless critique and visceral fandom' BILLIE JD PORTERA deep dive into the joy and power of personal pleasures, quirks, obsessions and bad taste, from zine royalty, Ione Gamble. Most of us consider taste to be a primal instinct. We like the things we like and everything we choose to consume, covet or loathe in our day-to-day lives is dictated by this unknowable force ... But at some point, we learn to not fully trust our own taste. We accept that there are people who have better taste than us, so we stop following the flutter of our hearts and attempt to finetune our brain to fall in line with what others consider to be 'good'.The Polyester Book of (Bad) Tasteis an antidote to this ever-creeping homogeneity and bland tastefulness. Edited and introduced by Polyester editor-in-chief, Ione Gamble, this book gathers influential writers from the pages of Polyester to take on the monumental task of defining taste for a generation battling algorithmic content suggestions and ever shortening trend cycles. It is a bible on how to navigate our own likes, dislikes, apathies and adorations. In a world constantly vying for our attention, having faith in your own (bad) taste is more than a small subversion - it's a rallying cry to live our lives unapologetically.CONTRIBUTERS: Ione Gamble, Rene Mati¿, Lauren O'Neill, Catherine Cohen, Seth Bogart, Zarina Muhammad, Tavi Gevinson, Gina Tonic, Misha MN, Katy Cutbirth, Yomi Adegoke, Angela Hui, Sabrina Brier, Kieran Yates, Annie Lord, Nicola Dinan and Ramisha Sattar.

Through rare access to the Violent Femmes and their archives, this book investigates the creation of such iconic songs as "Blister in the Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add it Up" and "Prove My Love", as well as the album's recording process. The self-titled debut from Milwaukee post-punk acoustic trio the Violent Femmes is one of those rare albums that seems to have altered the course of popular music and influenced just about everyone who heard it while also managing to operate almost entirely outside of the mainstream. Released in 1983 to little sales or attention, the band was so iconoclastic that it couldn't even engender support from Milwaukee's anti-establishment punk scene. Over the ensuing years, though, Violent Femmes managed to exert itself as an unstoppable cultural force, ascending the college radio charts and spreading through word-of-mouth. Violent Femmes didn't sound like anything else when it was made, and it still doesn't sound like anything else. The album somehow exists both outside of time and as one of the most evocative and enduring artifacts of the alternative '80's.

Musikalisch knüpft 'Philadelphia's been good to me' an Viles charakteristischen Sound an: klirrende Gitarren, hypnotische Passagen und Texte, die zwischen rau und melancholisch pendeln.
