Die Beiträge in diesem Band beschäftigen sich mit der Geschichte der astronomischen Forschung in der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone und der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik. Nach einer Vorstellung der entsprechenden Institute und Hochschulen werden drei wichtige Forschungsstandorte behandelt: Potsdam, Jena und Dresden. Ein Verzeichnis der astronomischen Dissertationen gibt einen Überblick über die Forschungsthemen. Einen Einblick in deutsch-deutsche Beziehungen liefert der Aufsatz zur politischen Geschichte der Astronomischen Gesellschaft.

Weiterhin werden acht Astronomen vorgestellt, die exemplarisch verschiedene Entwicklungswege zeigen: Cuno Hoffmeister und Hans Kienle, die bereits vor 1945 die astronomische Forschung mitprägten; der Physiker Kurt Mie, der nach der Rückkehr von einem erzwungenen Aufenthalt in der UdSSR in der Astronomie tätig war; Otto Singer als staatsnaher Wissenschaftsorganisator und astronomischer Popularisator; Wolfgang Mattig als einer der jungen Hoffnungsträger, die kurz vor dem Mauerbau die DDR verließen und die Forschung in der Bundesrepublik mitprägten; Karl-Heinz Schmidt als einer derjenigen, die in leitender Stellung entscheidenden Einfluss auf die astronomische Forschung hatten; und schließlich Georg Dautcourt und Rudolf Tschäpe, die sich gegen politische Zwänge wehrten. Der Inhalt
Die Zeit wird mit einem gleitenden Fenster, dem Chronophagen oder „Zeitfresser", erläutert und es wird demonstriert, dass es physikalisch die Zeit nur als Gegenwart gibt. Die Zeit ist keine Illusion! Sie ist wie ein Tsunami, der durch den Kosmos läuft. Alle anderen Zeiten, Vergangenheit und Zukunft, sind nur Information.
Das klassische Verständnis der Zeit wird am Zeitverstehen von Augustinus und Kant beschrieben. Aber das Phänomen Zeit ist in der Physik seit Einstein komplizierter geworden mit überraschenden, anscheinend widersinnigen Effekten wie etwa dem Zwillingsparadoxon. Es wird diskutiert, wie weit der Zeitbegriff damit überhaupt sinnvoll ist.
