Das klassische Verständnis der Zeit wird am Zeitverstehen von Augustinus und Kant beschrieben. Aber das Phänomen Zeit ist in der Physik seit Einstein komplizierter geworden mit überraschenden, anscheinend widersinnigen Effekten wie etwa dem Zwillingsparadoxon. Es wird diskutiert, wie weit der Zeitbegriff damit überhaupt sinnvoll ist.
Die Zeitmessung ist unvorstellbar genau geworden. Ihr Weg über großartige Mechanik an die Grenzen der Physik wird geschildert.
Ausgehend von der technischen Zeit wird die menschlich empfundene Zeit diskutiert. Wie fühlen wir die Zeit „normal", wie sonst? Beschleunigt sich die gefühlte Zeit? Dem Materialismus zufolge ist das Universum nichts weiter als eine gigantische Maschine, die seit dem Urknall geistlos auf ihr kaltes Ende zuläuft.
