Der Editionsband vereint schriftliche Schlüsselquellen, die den Umgang des preußischen Hofes und der Dynastie mit Künstlern und Monarchenbildnissen während des langen 19. Jahrhunderts thematisieren. Dabei finden verschiedenste Gattungen für Abbildungen Berücksichtigung - Gemälde, Medaillen, Porzellan, Denkmäler sowie Druckgrafiken, Fotografien und Film.
Basierend auf einer betont kultur- und sozialgeschichtlichen Hofforschung fokussiert der Band auf das Verhältnis von Tradition und Wandel in der monarchischen Bildpolitik. Die 271 bisher unveröffentlichten Quellen dokumentieren die Beauftragung von Künstlern, Vorgaben seitens des Hofs zu Motiven und Gestaltung sowie die Verwendung und Wirkung der geschaffenen Bildnisse. Dabei werden sowohl generelle Vorgehensweisen als auch individuelle Vorstellungen einzelner Monarchen sowie in Einzelfällen die der Monarchinnen und weiterer Mitglieder der Dynastie offengelegt, anhand deren sich Veränderungen in der Bildpolitik nachvollziehen lassen.

Kunst im öffentlichen Raum prägt nicht nur das Erscheinungsbild von Orten, sondern ist zugleich Ausdruck ihres Selbstverständnisses. Auf dem Gelände der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel befinden sich 43 Kunstwerke, die davon Zeugnis ablegen. Sie spannen einen weiten Bogen von figurativen bis hin zu ungegenständlich-kinetischen Arbeiten sowie von Wandbildern bis zu freistehenden Objekten in unterschiedlichen Materialien und spiegeln damit die Kunstentwicklungen insbesondere der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Erstmals werden diese Werke hier vollständig zusammengeführt und kunsthistorisch eingeordnet. So entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild der Kunst, die den Kieler Campus sowie die unmittelbare Umgebung der Kieler Kunsthalle prägt, Studierende während ihres Studiums begleitet und als Teil des Stadtraums von der intellektuellen Offenheit der Kieler Universität zeugt.
