We are living in a period of global volatility in which intersecting crises are combining with devastating impacts for people already living in and near poverty. Public diplomacy matters to the G20. As the self declared 'premier international forum for economic cooperation', the G20 has global interests and ambitions. The G20 requires the ongoing engagement and support of global public audiences. Simply put, it is a matter of effectiveness, legitimacy and credibility. Yet as an informal, nomadic institution that brings together a diverse array of high profile actors, global, interests and issues, the G20 also presents unique opportunities and challenges to public diplomacy's agenda. The wider narrative of the G20 as an inclusive institution capable of involving publics in the process of global change is underexplored. This book asserts that public diplomacy is the key to the G20's ongoing development, and proposes a fourth phase to John Kirton's (2013), current three phased approach: the mobilization of the many. This book delves into Scotland's evolving food system, uncovering the challenges of change, tracing food policy progress since devolution in 1999, and envisioning bold strategies for the next twenty-five years.Food system transformation is a key global challenge for this century. This challenge is evident in Scotland where plentiful food co-exists with food insecurity, where food waste appears intractable and farm animal welfare is compromised, and where the food system in its current form is incompatible with meeting national and global goals for climate and nature. Written by a food policy insider, this book discusses what a single country can do to tackle these problems and contribute to wider change. The book is grounded in a right-to-food perspective, and describes both the necessity of, and the opportunity for, a repurposing of the food system from a focus on commodity production and trade to a focus on nutrition equity and environmental restoration. It challenges some of the faulty maps still in use which are a poor guide to food system change, such as the idea that Scotland's priority is to feed the world, that food redistribution has a significant impact on either waste or poverty, or that educating people to make better choices is an effective strategy. It argues for more assertive governance of Scotland's food system, both by national and local governments using the new duties set out in Scotland's 2022 Good Food Nation Act. This should include active engagement of civil society, in keeping with the Scottish approach of collaborative policymaking. Nourishing Scotland

This edited volume explores the evolution of public sector reforms in Nigeria since the return to democracy in 1999. Marked by decades of inefficiency, corruption, and underperformance, Nigeria’s public sector has long required structural transformation. The Social Construction and Diffusion of GMO Risk Discourse on Chinese Social Media

Contending Over Uncertainty

Fentanyl is a first-person, insider account of how the crisis consumed the Biden Administration amid a series of other national security emergencies. It follows Jake Braun, a senior White House official, and his colleagues while they scramble to respond to the epidemic. As Mexican cartels ruthlessly executed their most radical transformation in 50 years, Braun and his colleagues architected the first U.S. government wide strategy to combat fentanyl in history. The effort brought him to Mexico to meet with Mexican agents who kick down cartel doors for the U.S. government there. He also spent time with data analytics wizards buried in nondescript offices in Virginia suburbs that hunt down Chinese fentanyl precursor chemicals on the Dark Web. He even takes a detour to gather intelligence from Russian migrants in U.S. detention facilities that migrated through cartel-controlled areas of Mexico. In the process, Braun uncovered the remarkable transformation cartels in Mexico underwent over the last 50 years. They morphed from narco-empires the size of Fortune 50 companies specializing in marijuana and cocaine to ones specializing in human migration and, separately, fentanyl. After much painstaking effort, the Biden Administration successfully executed the most sweeping takedown of cartel leadership and fentanyl infrastructure since the crisis began. Due to the efforts of heroic agents, intelligence officers and national security experts, the leviathan U.S. government is now marshaled in ways never before imagined against the Chinese chemical companies and cartels propagating the fentanyl epidemic. Further, the strategy seems to be working. Just a year after it was kicked off, the fentanyl fatalities dropped nearly 37%. Yet the crisis persists. Finally, Braun draws on his unique experience combating the epidemic to outline how the U.S. government can once and for all end the fentanyl crisis in America.
