Our ability to find meaning in things is one of the most important aspects of human life. But it is also one of the most mysterious. Where does meaning come from? What sorts of things have meaning? And how do we grasp the meaning others want to convey? This Very Short Introduction is shaped by exploring possible answers to these questions.

Human societies have one particularly important device for expressing and sharing meaning: language. Since our words are paradigm examples of things which have meaning, in this book, Emma Borg and Sarah Fisher use meaning in language as a case study for exploring meaning more generally. They focus on three possible sources for word meaning: things in the world, things in the mind, and social practices, exploring the key approaches thinkers have put forward in each of these arenas. Finally, they end by looking at some concrete applications of the ideas and approaches introduced in the book.

Der deutsche Reformator Martin Luther (1483–1546) wurde in eine Zeit der wachsenden Angst vor vermeintlichen Hexen hineingeboren, die einige Jahrzehnte später in massenhaften Verfolgungen mündete. Geprägt durch Phasen von Krieg, Seuchen, Hungersnöten und klimatischen Extremen entwickelte sich Luther zu einem der schärfsten Kritiker des Aberglaubens seiner Zeit. Trotz seines Bruchs mit der Römisch-Katholischen Kirche distanzierte er sich jedoch nicht von dem aus der scholastischen Theologie stammenden Glauben an Personen mit magischen Kräften.
Stellen vermeintliche „Hexen" für den Menschen des 21. Jahrhunderts offenkundig auf Fantasien beruhende Konstrukte dar, waren sie doch für den Reformator und seine Zeitgenossen eine real existierende Bedrohung am Rande der christlichen Gesellschaft. Ausgehend von dieser Annahme untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit anhand der Predigten Martin Luthers zum Thema „Hexerei" jene des criminis magiae beschuldigten Personen als diskriminierte soziale Gruppe in der Frühen Neuzeit. Dazu werden in einer interdisziplinären Synthese sowohl aktuelle Theorien aus der Diskriminierungsforschung als auch aus der Sprach- und der Geschichtswissenschaft genutzt.

Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, it interweaves historical semantics with an analysis of language to argue that slavery as it is primarily understood today – as a legal institution which reduced individuals involuntarily to the status of property - was not legitimized by biblical doctrine.
 The book presents a concise, accessible argument, focused around the translation of the Bible into English and the use of the language of slavery. The term ‘slavery’, emerging in the sixteenth century, was at first used to identify a condition of dishonour, as well as a system of forced labour, and it was only in the seventeenth century that it came to be equated with the Roman institution of 
 servitus
 , and in the eighteenth with the ownership of people as property. As a result, and uniquely among studies of slavery in the Bible, this book does not seek to engage in debates about whether or not the Bible supported slavery, claiming the premise itself is mistaken. The idea that slavery was an ancient legal institution that reduced individuals involuntarily to the status of property is a product of modernity.

When ancient Persian conquerors created a vast empire from the Mediterranean to the Indus, encompassing many peoples speaking many different languages, they triggered demographic changes that caused their own language to be transformed. Persian grammar has ever since borne testimony to the social history of the ancient Persian Empire. This study of the early evolution of the Persian language bridges ancient history and new linguistics. Written for historians, philologists, linguists, and classical scholars, as well as those interested specifically in Persian and Iranian studies, it explains the correlation between the character of a language's grammar and the history of its speakers. This book is the first to present, explore and compare those verbal communities in all of Shakespeare plays using computational social network analysis. Part of The Arden Encyclopaedia of Shakespeare's Language series, with volumes exploring how Shakespeare uses words to create meaning and shape characters, themes and genres, Volume 4: Character Networks presents another aspect of what Shakespeare's words do: create social worlds. The book illustrates how alliances or missed encounters can shape characters and plot; it explores gender, social and geographic differences in the plays' communities, and alerts readers to the function of minor characters - who often go unnoticed in criticism. Above all, it shows that what matters in Shakespeare's plays is not only the words characters speak, but also the company they keep. For each of Shakespeare's plays, the book includes information about the size and density of each play's character network as well as providing a visual network representation. Readers will also find a table for each play with scores that measure the centrality of all characters in terms of the importance, strength and number of their social ties. In addition, an accessible commentary on each play highlights salient features of the network data and explains what it means for our understanding of the play. A final chapter explores the broader patterns in Shakespeare's works by comparing the networks.

Mit einer qualitativen Diskursanalyse wurde der inklusive Sprachgebrauch hinsichtlich der Diversitätsdimensionen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse liefern wertvolle Einblicke darüber, wie inklusive Sprache in der Unternehmenskommunikation konstruiert wird, und dienen als Basis für die Entwicklung des Modells, das Unternehmen bei inklusiver Kommunikation unterstützt. Die Analyse ergab, dass zwar häufig eine geschlechtersensible Sprache verwendet wird, die anderen Dimensionen der Vielfalt, insbesondere in Bildmaterialien, jedoch weniger vertreten sind. Angesichts der wachsenden Bedeutung des sozialen Netzwerks LinkedIn und des fortlaufenden Wandels der sprachlichen Berücksichtigung der Geschlechter in der deutschen Sprache hin zur Inklusion weiterer Dimensionen beschäftigt sich diese Studie mit aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen und trägt zur linguistischen Erschließung des Themas bei.Die Autorin Natalie Barendt
