Synthesis Lectures on Operations Research and Applications

This book presents a comprehensive examination of crime patrolling problems across various domains, including robotics, security, and law enforcement, with a focus on the mathematical models used to optimize patrolling strategies. Patrolling is a critical crime prevention and deterrence strategy, requiring the effective allocation of resources to address evolving security challenges. In addition, patrolling is one of the most effective and widely adopted crime prevention and deterrence strategies worldwide. It is integral to security agencies such as police and military forces across various domains, including land, air, and maritime areas. As such, effective patrolling requires the coordination of manpower, technological resources, and policies to address evolving security challenges. The authors review recent research on robotic patrolling, multirobot systems, and police patrolling and also explore advances in modeling, optimization, and practical applications. In addition, the author’s analysis categorizes studies by core modeling themes, such as Game Theory, Mathematical Optimization, and Stochastic methods, and highlights the secondary modeling themes that frequently complement the primary approaches. Each study is categorized by fields including, but not limited to domain, patrolling focus, area representation, and solution methodology to facilitate cross-comparison. The book identifies gaps in current research, particularly the lack of a holistic examination of patrolling from robotic, autonomous, human, and hybrid perspectives, and proposes future directions for research in this evolving field.

Adler shows that, despite policymakers' (and filmmakers') obsessions with the cartels and international crime rings of myth, it was in fact the business model of sex traffickers that narcotics and arms smugglers borrowed from to forge the surprisingly un-organized structure of early twenty-first-century human, cocaine, and weapons trafficking.

Examines how Latino Evangelical churches promise salvation while reinforcing logics of surveillance and criminalization systems that oppress their congregants Living Redemption examines how faith-based institutions in Latinx communities enhance the state's carceral power even as they attempt to empower and redeem their adherents. Drawing on four years of ethnographic research across two Latinx congregations in Fresno and the San Francisco Bay Area, Melissa Guzman-Garcia explores how Mexican, Central American, and Chicana women build their own spiritual services and support systems while recruiting other criminalized people into their church. While these services are meant to offer support, Guzman-Garcia uncovers how they also end up enacting their own spiritual versions of carceral control. These faith-based organizations tend to socialize people to sanctify state power, either by promoting the idea that collective protests and social movements that challenge capitalism or capitalist exploitation would be unsuccessful, or by putting forward beliefs that the solution to social problems is a matter of "saving your soul," not working for structural change. Thus, these evangelical settings both perpetuate and disrupt the dominant the racial and gendered social order, sustaining and strengthening state power. Guzman-Garcia's analysis urges us to assess the gendered logics and spiritual ideologies that fuel contemporary forms of American carceral governance and consider who exactly benefits from this spiritual and political labor.

What do you do when a Nebraska State trooper accuses you of sexual assault?

Brienne Splittgerber dreamed of following in her father's footsteps and becoming a criminal investigator for the Nebraska State Patrol. In the fall of 2014, at the age of thirty-four, the married mother of two finally got her chance when she was selected to join the Nebraska State Patrol's fifty-sixth recruitment camp.

One week into training, the aspiring investigator told five members in her chain of command about the boot camp physical examination she experienced six weeks earlier.
