Das Fachbuch verknüpft die Diskussion virtueller Währungen mit möglichen Auswirkungen von Bitcoin und Co. auf Zentralbankpolitik. Der zweite Teil des Buches widmet sich daher zunächst ausführlich ihrer Abgrenzung zu Fiatgeld, ihren Nutzern und Regulierungsfragen. Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt schließlich auf der Bedeutung virtueller Währungen für Zentralbanken im Hinblick auf Auswirkungen auf den Geldmarkt und weitere relevante Politikfelder. Hier werden mögliche Reaktionen der Zentralbanken diskutiert und ob virtuelle Währungen eine ernstzunehmende Gefahr für das Geldschöpfungsmonopol sowie eine tatsächliche Konkurrenz im Geldsystem darstellen. Das Buch schließt mit einem Blick auf die Blockchain-Technologie und ihrer Bedeutung für verschiedene Finanzbranchen.
