A Handbook on Post-1956 Hungarian Refugee Relief

From Local Crisis to Global Impact

How the social organization of Europe and China shaped their divergent economic and political trajectories over the past millennium In the eleventh century, when Europe was still backward and poor, China was a rich and sophisticated civilization. Yet Europe became the birthplace of democracy and the Industrial Revolution, driving the Great Enrichment, while China stagnated until the end of the twentieth century and was always ruled by autocracies. Two Paths to Prosperity traces the emergence of two very different social organizations in premodern China and Europe--the clan and the corporation--showing how they were key factors in the economic and political divergence of these two great civilizations. In this landmark book, three leading economists offer a bold new account of why Europe and China evolved along such different trajectories. In the early Middle Ages, public goods like risk sharing, religious worship, education, and conflict resolution were provided by nonstate organizations in both societies. China increasingly relied on kin-based cooperation within clans, while weaker kinship ties in Europe gave rise to corporations such as guilds, universities, and self-governing towns. Despite performing similar functions, clans and corporations were built on very different principles--with lasting consequences until today. Providing a novel answer to a fundamental question in economic and political history, Two Paths to Prosperity shows how extended kinship in Chinese society facilitated the consolidation of autocracy and hindered innovation and economic development, and how corporations in Europe influenced emerging state institutions and set the stage for the Industrial Revolution.

Two Paths to Prosperity

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE IT WAS MADE NEARLY 1,000 YEARS AGO, THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY RETURNS TO ENGLAND IN A MAJOR EXHIBITION AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM.Now, uncover the incredible true story behind the tapestry with this definitive character-led history of the most famous year in English history - 1066. 'A thrilling journey ... history as it should be written' ALICE LOXTON 'Dazzlingly creative ... brings the eleventh century to life' ANTHONY BALE 'Erin Goeres is a stunning new voice in medieval history' SUZANNAH LIPSCOMBOn 5 January 1066, Edward the Confessor's death plunged England into a succession crisis that would change the kingdom forever. Mere hours after Edward's remains had been laid to rest, his brother-in-law Harold II seized power, inciting the wrath of two formidable challengers: King Haraldr Sigurðarson of Norway and Edward's ambitious cousin, William, Duke of Normandy. In this startling new history, Dr Erin Goeres unveils the intense drama that unfolded, culminating in the tumultuous nineteen days between the battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings in the autumn of 1066 - the decisive event that ended Anglo-Scandinavian rule, secured the Norman Conquest and transformed medieval England.Drawing together sources from the three regions at the heart of the fray - England, Normandy and Scandinavia - Goeres uncovers the complex histories, characters and motivations that shaped one of the most defining moments in British and European history. We discover the stories of Tostig Godwinson, Harold II's estranged brother; of William the Conqueror's enigmatic wife, Matilda of Flanders, alleged lover of Harold of England; and we meet the regular people swept up in events beyond their control, such as an English farmer beheaded for his unwillingness to give up his fur-lined coat to a Norwegian invader.Rich in new research and vivid storytelling, Nineteen Days in Autumn reveals the gripping tale of three nations entwined and the enthralling yet devastating consequences of their unravelling._________'Visceral, thrilling and unexpectedly gripping given we all know the outcome!' EMMA SOUTHON'With more treachery, tragedy and cliffhangers than an episode of Game of Thrones, Nineteen Days in Autumn makes for an exhilarating read' HETTA HOWES'Brilliant and compelling' TABITHA STANMORE'Written with imagination and flair, this book vividly brings to life the real human stories at the heart of the fateful events of 1066.' Historische Geschlechterforschung

What if the secret to conquering modern business challenges was already solved... over two thousand years ago? Whether you are scaling a startup, navigating office politics, or leading a company through rapid transformation, modern business can feel like an endless battle. But history's greatest leaders - from Alexander the Great and Scipio Africanus, to Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Augustus and more - were wrestling with these exact same strategic dilemmas. In Strategize Like Caesar, business executive and compliance expert Nick Henderson-Mayo seamlessly bridges classical antiquity with modern industry. Structured across four key groupings of organisation and strategy - The Disruptors, The Rivals, The Rulers, and The Survivors - this book pairs epic classical history with sharp corporate case studies and actionable frameworks. Step out of the boardroom, and onto the battlefield, discovering how to:

Identify your Centers of Gravity: Apply Alexander the Great's tactics to pinpoint critical pressure points in your competition.

Avoid 'Hannibal's Paradox': Stop confusing short-term tactical wins with long-term strategic success.

Master office politics: Leverage transactional alliances and 'Strategic Distance' to build leverage and protect your team.

Pace transformational change: Use Augustus's principle of festina lente (make haste slowly) to execute seamless organizational pivots.

Drawing from a decade spent advising Fortune 500 risk and legal teams, Henderson-Mayo delivers an indispensable, battle-tested playbook for modern decision-makers. Because the leaders who thrive in the future are those who learn from the past.

Sommer in Ostberlin. Der
1. FC Union

i, die erste eigene Schachtel
Semper

For more than two decades, Marwan Barghouti has been held in an Israeli prison cell, much of that time in total isolation. Yet his voice has never been forgotten.Described by the Economist as 'the world's most important prisoner' and often referred to as Palestine's Mandela, Barghouti remains the most widely supported Palestinian political leader. As a long-standing advocate of peace grounded in justice and equality, he has become an enduring symbol of unity and hope - even from behind bars.Unbroken brings together, for the first time, a powerful and intimate portrait of Barghouti's life and struggle for a free Palestine: private letters to his family, personal writings, correspondence with global public figures, press interviews, public statements and rare personal photographs. This is his story, in his own words. Unsilenced, unbroken.

From the bestselling author of FEMINA, a brilliant reappraisal of the medieval women whose lives have been exploited for political, nation-building ends. From Joan of Arc to Lady Godiva, Isabella of Castile to Catherine of Siena, famous medieval women have become national icons, their legends burnished and celebrated. But over the centuries their lives have been exploited, their stories twisted and weaponised. Searching for the real women behind the legends, bestselling historian Janina Ramirez reveals how history is often hijacked to serve the ideological and political agendas of the present. Praise for LEGENDA: 'Fearless, stunning and shockingly relevant' Alice Roberts, author of Domination'A history like no other. Palgrave Studies in the History of Finance

This volume explores the economic and financial contexts behind a period of large-scale bankruptcies in Europe across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With a particular focus on Spanish and Italian case studies, contributions analyse numerous aspects of failure and insolvency during this time.Despite growing contemporary interest in economic crises—particularly in the aftermath of 2008—the history of bankruptcy practices and the responsibilities of financial actors within the context of early globalisation remains largely underexplored. This volume responds to that need, offering a detailed, archivally grounded and theoretically robust investigation into parallels that exist in early modern Europe. Drawing out comparative analyses between modern and early modern financial crises, the book illuminates how early modern states developed systems of guarantees in tandem with the growth of mercantile capitalism, and covers questions including public debt management, financial transparency, the accountability of economic actors, and the relationship between political and economic power. This book will be a fascinating read for scholars of early modern financial and economic history.Giuseppe De Luca

In How the Regime Rules, New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rufo delivers a bold, unflinching examination of how America’s founding spirit was transformed—and, in his telling, betrayed—by the rise of modern bureaucratic power. In How the Regime Rules, Christopher F. Rufo—the New York Times bestselling author who nuked Critical Race Theory, gutted DEI in corporate boardrooms, put Somali fraud on the map, and toppled the president of Harvard—delivers his most explosive work yet: a manifesto for the evolving right and a scorched-earth blueprint to shatter the invisible power structure that now governs America. We all know the Regime. It’s the interlocking web of the Deep State bureaucracy, biased media, corrupted academia, and corporate middle managers that enforces conformity, doles out status to favorites, and crushes dissent. Instead of ruling by winning elections, the Regime rules through cultural capture—dictating what you are allowed to say, think, and believe. Rufo strips back the curtain on their operation, turning the Left’s own playbook against them to show how a radical minority seized the commanding heights of American life. He tracks the bureaucratic rot that traded our founding spirit for a system of managed decline, from the administrative state’s silent coup to the ideological hijacking of our elite institutions. But the time for grievance-filled exposés is past. Now is the time to build real, lasting political power. The old GOP establishment failed because it spent decades begging for a seat at the Regime’s table—only to be mocked, then discarded. The "New Right" too often gets distracted by petty revenge and backward-looking saltiness. Rufo rejects both. Instead, he offers a high-energy, forward-looking vision: building a counter-elite that is rooted in real community, culturally dominant, relentlessly entrepreneurial, and unapologetically patriotic—just like the Founding Fathers. Patriots are already building independent businesses, parallel media ecosystems, homeschool networks, and tech startups that operate entirely outside the Regime’s thumb. Rufo provides a practical counterrevolution roadmap—dismantling the power of bloated bureaucracies, purging left-wing racialism from federal agencies, restoring merit in our universities, and shifting the fight from pure culture wars to the economic realities of the working man. Build it well—make it vibrant, profitable, and bold—and the American people will follow in droves. How the Regime Rules moves us past easy wins or empty nostalgia. It equips us with the strategy, tactics, and spirit required for total national reconstruction. Drawing on his hard-won victories and a cold-blooded analysis of how power actually works, Rufo shows how a new generation can seize the initiative, recapture the American spirit, and restore self-government.
