Abhandlungen zur Literaturwissenschaft

Treue - ausgerechnet mit diesem Begriff aus dem Inventar bürgerlicher Ehen und populärer Romanzen wird im Jahrhundert des Realismus der nicht mehr abzuweisende Anspruch auf die Nachahmung der Wirklichkeit geltend gemacht. Das Problem der Wirklichkeitstreue rückt die ethische Dimension von Mimesis in den Blick. Ziel des Bandes ist es, die polyvalente Treue-Semantik auf ihre Brauchbarkeit für die Beobachtung des Realismus zu befragen. Das geschieht in Studien zu Stifter, Fontane, Keller, C.F. Meyer, Flaubert u.a.
Die Semantik der Treue bezieht sich auf eine Ästhetik der Genauigkeit und eine Beziehung der Loyalität gleichermaßen: Im Ehe- und Ehebruchsroman birgt gerade die Ambivalenz der Semantik (Treue zum Anderen, Treue zu sich) ein schier unerschöpfliches Potential der narrativen Konfliktgestaltung. Politisch wird Herrschaftstreue im Programmrealismus nach 1848 vorausgesetzt, konfligiert allerdings mit dem Verlangen nach Gegenwartsromanen und der demokratischen Aufwertung aller möglichen Stoffe. Poetologisch korrespondiert das Postulat der Wirklichkeitstreue mit der Privilegierung zuverlässiger Erzählinstanzen und mittelmäßiger Helden und wirft damit die Frage nach der Glaubwürdigkeit nicht nur der Fiktion auf: Erzählung und öffentlicher Diskurs können den ökonomischen und moralischen Kredit des Publikums genießen oder einbüßen.

Kriege wie der in der Ukraine haben erneut Interesse am Pazifismus geweckt. This book examines the social and cultural meanings of mental illness and psychiatric hospitalisation in early twentieth-century Greece. Although Greek psychiatrists were trained in countries such as France and Germany, and followed general European models of psychiatry, they practiced within a different economic, social, and cultural context. By focusing on a country on the periphery of Europe, this book explores new dimensions of mental health care on the continent, and illustrates how European theories were adapted by Greek psychiatrists. The author presents case studies of two Greek mental health hospitals, Dromokaitio and Eginitio, both of which were situated in Athens, but treated patients from all over Greece. Exploring how patients came to be admitted to the hospitals, the book highlights the relationship between communities and mental health institutions, and thus, the interplay between society and asylum. It investigates both private and public discourses around mental illness and hospitalisation, bringing to the forefront patients, family members, state and local authorities, charitable organisations, and medical professionals.
