Biotechnological innovations in healthcare have extended the life span of human beings in the 21st century. Emerging health technologies have resulted in human beings living longer, and improving the quality of their lives and their deaths. What were once considered matters of science fiction have now become a reality in a burgeoning field of boundary-pushing advancements. However, emerging health technologies require careful regulation and ethical scrutiny. There must be a balance between what can be done and what should be done in technology, health and law.

This book uniquely takes the reader on a journey of the life cycle - from before the cradle to beyond the grave - of biotechnological innovations to better understand what healthcare of the present and future might hold. This book examines the social and cultural meanings of mental illness and psychiatric hospitalisation in early twentieth-century Greece. Although Greek psychiatrists were trained in countries such as France and Germany, and followed general European models of psychiatry, they practiced within a different economic, social, and cultural context. By focusing on a country on the periphery of Europe, this book explores new dimensions of mental health care on the continent, and illustrates how European theories were adapted by Greek psychiatrists. The author presents case studies of two Greek mental health hospitals, Dromokaitio and Eginitio, both of which were situated in Athens, but treated patients from all over Greece. Exploring how patients came to be admitted to the hospitals, the book highlights the relationship between communities and mental health institutions, and thus, the interplay between society and asylum. It investigates both private and public discourses around mental illness and hospitalisation, bringing to the forefront patients, family members, state and local authorities, charitable organisations, and medical professionals. Combining multiple perspectives on psychiatric hospitalisation, this book provides a nuanced account of the history of mental illness and health care in Greece, and highlights the different purposes, limitations, and contradictions inherent in treating the mentally ill.

The book discusses the definition of negative and cognitive symptoms and offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of their impact on patients' real-life functioning and quality of life. It covers the available assessment instruments, including those in early intervention settings, and explores possible treatments, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
Negative symptoms are common and pervasive in schizophrenia, significantly impacting an individual's life and serving as strong predictors of functional outcomes. However, they are often underrecognized and undertreated compared to positive symptoms. Addressing negative symptoms requires a multimodal approach. Enhancing our understanding and developing effective treatment strategies for negative symptoms are essential for improving the well-being of individuals with schizophrenia.
Cognitive dysfunctions represent a core feature of schizophrenia, present at any stage of the disease and in subjects at high risk for psychosis (UHR), and they also have a significant impact on patients' psychosocial functioning. While pharmacological treatment is modestly effective for the cognitive dimension, there is considerable evidence of the efficacy of cognitive remediation interventions on cognition and functioning.
In the volume, particular attention is given to the relationships, overlap, and independence of the two dimensions in schizophrenia. The authors explore how to disentangle the relative prevalence and role of such dimensions in patients' everyday lives and discuss the differential effectiveness of treatment options.
This book is the first effort to explore the complex relationships between negative and cognitive symptoms in a dedicated format, featuring contributions from many of the best-recognized experts in the field. It fills a gap in the existing literature and will, therefore, be a key resource for clinicians and researchers in the field.

Torture and the Recognition of Psychological Suffering in International Law examines how and to what extent psychological suffering-or state violence not leaving overt physical marks-has been recognised under the prohibition of torture, inhuman and degrading treatment in international law. It systematically reviews interpretive practices across three authoritative adjudicatory bodies: the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and the United Nations Committee Against Torture. The book also draws on extensive interviews with advocates (applicant lawyers), adjudicators (judges and committee members) and institutional lawyers (senior registry or secretariat lawyers.) Psychological suffering has, in broad terms, been recognised as falling within the prohibition from the inception of these three institutions. A closer analysis, however, also shows that it has never been specifically categorised as torture when standing on its own. Moreover, psychological suffering is often excluded altogether from the purview of the prohibition, either categorised instead as 'lawful sanctions' or as falling below the 'minimum level of severity' threshold, and therefore not found to be a violation. Doctrinal scholarship offers only limited explanations for this categorisation and exclusion, as evident in interpretive practice. Ergün Cakal reveals numerous inter-related reasons for these practices: socio-political standards recognising the significance of psychological suffering are selectively applied or altogether overlooked; procedural pragmatism encourages caution and conservatism regarding categorisation; and scientific expertise documenting health impacts has not compelled adjudicators in all cases. Finally, interpretation often still depends on sense-centric reasoning (intuition-impression-empathy), potentially undercutting scientific evidence and perpetuating the preconception that severe suffering must be physical to be legally cognisable.

Es deutet Wirtschaft nach Maßgabe einer Maschine und reduziert den Menschen auf einen Nutzenoptimierer, dessen Lebenssinn in einer fortwährenden Steigerung seines Vorteils verortet wird. Dieses Mindset erweist sich zunehmend als dysfunktional, und es steht zu befürchten, dass seine Prolongierung in die digitale Wirtschaft der Zukunft die Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts eher verschärfen als lösen wird. Deshalb votiert das Buch für ein neues wirtschaftliches Denken, das Impulse aus der vorneuzeitlichen Ökonomie aufnimmt und für künftige Unternehmen aufbereitet, deren Leitmetapher nicht mehr die Maschine, sondern der Garten sein wird: ein Ort des Wachstums im Einklang mit der Natur und im Dienst menschlicher Lebendigkeit – ein Ort der Wertschöpfung, die nicht durch Mangel und Bedürftigkeit motiviert ist, sondern aus der Fülle einer im antiken Sinne erotischen Leidenschaft für das Leben.
